[ENTRY] 6262 King Kahuka’s Throne Remake
durazno33 replied to SevenDeadlyStreamers's topic in Pirate MOCs
That croc is great! Totally a nice update. You totally took that set and turned it into a modern MOC. Well done. The tall palm tree is a bit too straight. Could you add one of these to the build to bend it some? https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=65578&idColor=86#T=C&C=11 -
With all these people replying with quoting you, it gets confusing as to which of these is your current draft. Can you update your current rendition to the top of the page in the original post?

Not withstanding the comments about hippies, I like the colors and minifigure choices. I think you could make them look a bit more "piratey" if you swapped out one of the heads with a head with an eye patch, gave one of the pirates a hook for a hand, and gave another one a pegged leg, then those injuries would provide more clues that these were pirates and not hippies. Plus more weapons... hippies like peace, pirates like war.

One small suggestion: maybe change the bandana of the pirate to be blue so that he stands out. There is a lot of red and yellow in the build and some blue would add some contrast.

Overall a great build with lots of nice details like the coconuts, the hut and the catamaran. A couple suggestion I might add, Maybe color the extended arm of the catamaran to be red instead of the brown. The rock island seems a bit odd that it doesn't have sand around the rocks especially since it is right next to a sandy island. It would be hard to do at this point but putting sand underneath the rocks would fit or at least some sand on a side of the rocks. Again, probably hard to do at this point but it would increase the cohesion of the two islands being right next to each other.

The way the chest is opened, I too hoped to see some treasure sticking out? Maybe adding some gems? If you don't have the room for the piece count, you could convert the 2 cylinders under the dock into a 1x4 black arch and remove one of the seats in the row boat to make room for the treasure chest. That should give you 4 more pieces to use for gems or other treasure in the chest.

Color wise the Skulls Eye Schooner wasn't my favorite of the classic pirates because it lacked the bright colors like the Barracuda or the red or blue of the imperial ships. These colors lend themselves to having a ghost or skeleton crew. When you add a crew, I think that would be a cool addition to the classic build.

I love the water. It looks super. It's generally too part intensive for most people to do but it looks great! The extra height on the tower is cool so more pirates can be on the lookout at the same time. I'm not sure I see the hammock. The brick built approach is a bit lacking. Maybe you could use a net piece instead and fold it creatively to make the net? https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=71155&name=Net, String 10 x 10 Square&category=[String & Net]#T=C

A picture paints a thousand words. In this case, 39 words does not a picture make. Picture coming soon?

Another great remake here. I enjoy the new take by adding a bridge between the two as a harbor gate. Two suggestions: your ramp looks great but when you reach the level of the building, you have plain studs. I suggestion covering them with 1x1 tile gray and dark grey to make it appear cobbled like the ramp. Second and this is less important, the red roofs look a bit plain. Maybe changing them out to a different style than just using red slopes. Using plates with tiles on them or red and dark red cheese block slopes or some other would add more detail.

[ENTRY] 6259 Broadsides Brig / 6234 Renegades Raft

This reminds me a bit of the "wall set" to add onto helms deep from the Lotr sets. (9471) It's a fun little "battle pack" with build. What made that set stand out was that you could get a good number of minifigures and a nice add on to the full helms deep. You did that here with being able to add to the larger set and it looks good. As far as being a the battle pack, it would need another minifigure to fit that price range. Maybe add one more minifigure?- 25 replies

This is a fun little boat. One thing to mention is that triangle sails don't need to have a bottom support bar. Instead tension from the wind on the sail and the sail tied to the boat with a rope is a enough to provide support. (Kind of like how a kit flights with a string holding it to the ground). That removing the bar and the couple support pieces and replacing it with a rope could reduce your part count if that is still and issue. Something like one of these:

I'm not sure I like the addition of the extra flags. With 3 it seems a bit redundant. As far a color goes, I miss the color that the palm tree and the red roof from the old set added. If you don't end up changing based on some of the other suggestions already given, I might suggest adding an orange crab or nugget colored crate to add some color.

[ENTRY] 6267 Lagoon Lock-Up/Soldiers’ Tavern Remake
durazno33 replied to Aanchir's topic in Pirate MOCs
I saw the picture and new exactly which set this was a remake of so good job on that. I love all the great details including adding the shop keeper. I like that you curved the water base and color mixed the bricks to show wear. I like that you have a nice full treasure room. Those chairs are also a great addition. My one critic would be that the fire doesn't have a chimney. Yes, the window could be opened to vent the smoke but the fabric canopy above the window would quickly change colors and possibly burn. Maybe add a small chimney? Or just leave that to the imagination. ;) Well done on this build! -

Just a quick color thing? Why are you using dark tan and brown for the lowest level ground and dock? Why not stick with one color? Is it representing wood or sand? If the dark tan is sand, is it wet sand? I guess I don't understand what the colors are implying there. -
[ENTRY] Renegade's End (Mini Set) - Sequel to 6234 Renegade's Raft

I like that you built some water for the shark to sit in and appear to be lunging out of. Having sharks on the top of the water the way Lego always does it is kinda funny to me. I will add that the water looks a bit too square. Water is fluid so some round corners on the water would add some fluidity to the scene. -
I agree with the color of the leaf comment. The olive green is out of character with the bright colors of these old sets. A bright green or regular green would fit better. Other than that, I think you did great!

[ENTRY] 1795 Imperial Cannon Remake (Mini Set)
durazno33 replied to CaptainDarkNStormy's topic in Pirate MOCs
I agree with what's been said about the missing wall. I didn't recognize it from the start. If you have another piece, I might suggest adding a ram rod as without that to clean and prime the cannon, the soldier wouldn't be able to use his cannon.- 16 replies

This is really good! One of the ones that don't really need critical feedback. Well done!

Is that a blue or a black boat piece? The lighting is really low. Maybe brighten up the picture. The top flagpole holding the jolly roger is a bit too long as the jolly roger sticks up a bit too far. Maybe consider getting a shorter pole to hold it?
-
I agree. It would be a great addition to that wave. My only suggestions might be to add a couple crates of cargo or food stuffs and have the pirate not wearing blue so that we know he isn't with the bluecoats. Maybe green pants and green bandana.

[ENTRY] 6273 Rock Island Refuge Remake
durazno33 replied to CollinsAnimationStudio's topic in Pirate MOCs
When I first looked at this build, it took me a while to realize that that was a brick built ramp and not the 3D baseplate. Well done. One question I have is "Why the mix of light grey and black bricks?" The intermixing seems a bit odd to me. Geologically, a small island would have rocks of similar type. If the black is to represent a type of wood, then why intermix wood and stone is such a marbled fashion? I would suggest deciding on what each color represents so the build is consistent with matching color with represented building material.- 26 replies

[ENTRY] Remake of 6234 Renegade’s Raft
durazno33 replied to SevenDeadlyStreamers's topic in Pirate MOCs
I agree with some of the discussion about the barrels. The proportions of the height of the build by the width of the build make it seem a bit top heavy. Additional width would help some with that. (It might just be the viewing angle but that's my take from the current picture.) -
I like A or B best. The full bar of white or grey is distracting.

[CONTEST] Creative Critic Leaderboard - Final Scoring

Sorry, I kind of got put off checking up on the contest after the sour user started ranting about how the contest was unfair. I stopped checking in on the contest so much after that. I'll see what folks have been making now.
