  1. I find this odd as well, as though the build is done blindly with no grasp of how it works... but people are different. I 100% love the build, and understand everything i do. But i had technic as a kid, and strip and rebuild my own bike engines in winter, so i kind of figured my mind works in that kind of way, and just presume not everybody's does? I've never timed a build (and hope i never do!), its a hobby i enjoy so i'm happy to steady away with it... official sets take up less than 5% of my 'lego time', the other 95% is just building mocs, mocs and more mocs. So again, my lego experience means understanding is second nature. The thought of building sets and displaying them with out tearing them to pieces and moc-ing would be terrible. A Lego nightmare. Someone also mentioned relaxation - i'm 100% behind this. Running your own business generates a lot of stress, having a couple of hours on an evening building is brilliant for chilling out and stress busting. Its my version of yoga.
  2. anyone remember seeing early pics of 8860 with springs on axles rather than the shock unit? found one..
  3. you can reduce backlash significantly if you put a big gear reduction right at the end, ideally with a worm gear as this stops and back-torque. The final reduction divides the backlash by its reduction..
  4. Eeek! The arocs felt very modular to build and i think is one of the best building experiences, for me BWE comes second as it was just proper technic building style. beams and frames and more frames and beams. A joy to build. I don't like making random fiddly bits that make no sense.. Claas was like that, didn't enjoy that build very much. I'm hoping for the big hairy chested style of BWE with the modularity of arocs. I already love its looks, and seeing the live data feedback to the app made my wallet open....
  5. Could be an 1100... https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjz2qSt0qLgAhUMDOwKHe8JDawQjRx6BAgBEAU&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinterest.com%2Fpin%2F300896818828236264%2F&psig=AOvVaw2c4JJM6BbrUdIxQNqLfN2B&ust=1549389074798946
  6. Intersting video showing how its shipped to site in modules and built up.... be nice if the building replicates these modules
  7. It kind of reminds of the original 851 - just a modern version - thats a compliment by the way!! if you've never seen this guys video's, you really need to.. they're totally awesome..
  8. In fairness, lego sets using gearboxes aren't mechanically authentic, but i get your drift.. a gearbox feels more authentic than 7 motors, and feels more 'technic'. However 2 hubs and many motors is a great set for getting the new parts. The bugatti had a huge 8 speed gearbox, but its suspension and engine architecture had zero authenticity (suspension never seems to have...) Each set has its strengths and weaknesses. I'm looking forward to the new parts, and also very pleased that the none-car nuts get something big and special.. very pleased!
  9. But its only bluetooth... which as a comms protocol is very open to any developer, its not tied to smartphones. Its just thats the most commonly owned bluetooth device. Get giddy with a raspberry pi and build your own controller?
  10. Wow, there's whole other world opened up right there!!! But not for this forum... (probably right though, still a toy )
  11. Yep... and, not sure what your point is. I understand that everyone has a price threshold, and its different for different things, so for some, this is too expensive for lego and i wouldn't argue with that as its a personal choice. Its subjective. As mentioned previously, everyone on here will have more expensive toys. If its not a necessity, its a toy, so my motorbikes are toys (i've always thought of them as that), and they're many thousands of pounds to buy and many thousands of pounds to run and maintain..... but still a simple joy, irrelevant of cost. Cost vs pleasure isn't a comparable metric... thats an implied disparity to 'prove' something... just not sure what its proving? 100% agreement. You make a lot good points in that post.. scare mongering and pointless nitpicking not the least of them.
  12. ...that's the Spirit I Like most... keep it up?? ..For me it is that simple though! I think there's a lot of over analysis going on about a potentially obsolete phone control system.. stuff goes obsolete all the time, even faster where tech is involved (what are the chances of all the propriety SatNav's etc fitted to modern cars still working in 10 years? What about battery powered cars?! They'll be obsolete soooo fast once hydrogen fuel cells are fully sorted.. but people are buying them..) Sometime the simple joy of shiny lego seems to get lost!
  13. me too. nothing stays built for long... waste of bricks!!
  14. It is... see definition above. I agree with this.. 100% a toy It might be the presentation of new parts with a label on, but that label is on a toy. The ONLY argument, is each persons opinion on the price. Toys don't have a defined price range, more than 'X' and its not a toy! Price doesn't define whether its a toy or not....
  15. Mmmm... I have a Kawasaki ZX10r sat in my garage, and i consider that a toy. Last winter i spent over £1k just having its suspension rebuilt, but its still a toy. I've 3 motorbikes out there, all toys. My car's not a toy. People spend £3-4k on pushbike(!), and they're toys. Price doesn't determine whether something is a toy or not..... its a hobby. Different hobbies have different price tags, simple as that. What you're saying is that this hobby is getting more expensive, but its still a hobby and they're still toys regardless of the cost.
  16. Just a thought... Why not just use an android emulator and run the android app on a windows device? Or just use an android tablet? they'll run all android apps i assume, cost about £100 and don't have a sim/contract to worry about... all you need is a google account (free) to install apps. Surely thats the cheap and easy solution? (plus you get more real estate work with) I'm assuming there's no platform specific blocks on the android tablet OS stopping that working? Just thinking out loud....
  17. Thats how we keep ourselves 'indispensable' !! As a developer, i use that other saying, 'PICNIC'... (problem in chair, not in computer)
  18. Am i right in thinking the planetary gear isn't in 42100 and only in the 4x4? Hard to keep track of all the posts! All the PU stuff in 42100, plus getting the planetary's when they come available is a moc-ers dream. Happy days!
  19. I did exactly that! A large latte from starbucks is £3.30, i bet i average 2 a week, thats £300 right there!!!
  20. Its a whopper with a whole new control system, and lots of it too. Its always going to come at a price. Bugatti was a gearbox and engine wrapped in bricks with no motors or RC or anything to shout about (except the orange wave selectors, and they're only £2 each), and there was a queue to buy that at 329 quid... so in comparison, its way better value. Thats not to say its cheap, cos of course its not, its still a very expensive toy, but everything's relative as an austrian chap once said. Buy the blue thing and you got some.. err, blue bricks, buy this and you get a lot of PU components, plus the new frame and track wheels and whatever else is in there. Being able to see things like the angle of inclination as a live figure on the app has much appeal.. to me at least. If its going to cost a kings ransom, and it does, better it be for new technology and trick bits. I don't build and display, so things like the bugatti have limited appeal. I build, enjoy it, and then take it apart to use for mocs so this does affect my view point... ...and i'm very very glass half full when it comes to lego (which is why i like @Jim reviews, and they are too). The joy and excitement i felt as a 10 yr old hasn't left me, so i see this set and think Awesome!!! Then work out how i justify the cost to my wife . But for me, its excitement that is the overriding emotion... i hope i never get negative where lego is concerned.
  21. Great spot!! I hadn't realised that... I would a shorter LA, the mini ones are too weak, but a shorter one thats 'full width' if you follow me would be very useful... but these XL ones show i'm not the only one that like a big scale model!!! Torion has a Liebherr engine... but is very similar to the Volvo wheeled loader https://www.claas.co.uk/products/wheel-loaders/torion-1914-1177
  22. Exactly. Dependency is low.. all our phones and pc's are dependant on infrastructures like the 4G network and the internet, and we don't worry about that. All you Apple users are using their proprietary platform, but you don't sweat it.. at least MS and Google are using a lot of open source stuff. Its a none issue really... I hope so, its a great collaboration! And i'm loving this new set.
  23. Did it?! Awesome! I hear you, and don't disagree, if it was a choice i'd spend it on my wife too... its a lot of money, but it will be a xmas 2019 present for me, and it will get discounted, so 300 days, £1 a day, makes me feel better about it (it is just a toy after all, we all buy cars and bikes etc that cost way more, but they're practical so easy to justify, toys are harder to justify. and a 450 euro toy is a big leap) The killer for me is: New control systems Big special set thats not a car. how long have I been moaning about 'another car', and heres one that isn't!! (please have a pretty box like the cars get....) I'm a sucker for big construction and agriculture. BWE is still such an awesome set. It is a lot of money for a toy, but i don't smoke, drink maybe 1 beer a week on average and don't gamble... so i figure i'm allowed one vice?! (and my wife mostly agrees, which helps a lot!!) ps I hope its not empty inside..... I go to Oz once a year on business... if you're near Perth we could do an import deal!!
  24. I've recently got some 2.2's (150mm tractor tyres), they fit great on the bigger rims - i've got some modified rc rims too. Very easy to make lego-axle compatible. I prefer the bigger ones, bigger scale means for space for functions.
