[MOC] Spinning Gimbals
schraubedrin replied to sheo's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is a beautiful piece of engineering. I love how you managed to isolate each of the three rotations. I think i saw something comparable to this in a big technic spaceship wip moc, that got cancelled, does anybody remember it?- 34 replies

Technic 2017 Set Discussion
schraubedrin replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The rear swing is an ingenious construction. I guess it took them some time to find a design incorporating bevel gears while being strong enough to support the bike. Have you seen the "40 years" print on the top of the box? it seems there's some kind of part ..? -
This is really one of the greatest contests to date. 33: 10 1: 6 34: 4 3: 3 21: 2 30: 1 But really, there were much more awesome models.

wow, the wheels put the perfect finish on this beautiful model. I'm looking forward to the video.

This project looks promising. I like that you included pneumatic connection points at the end. Am i seeing it correctly, that you're not using LEGO System parts, not even at the battery box? Maybe some kind of cable carrier for the tubing? http://www.alterous.com/products/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/mini0180_20_1.jpg

This looks awesomely small, do you plan to fit the battery box on the vehicle?

what a nice and compact shifter, great design. Did you use half beams to prevent jams? concerning the old wheel that broke: There's something wrong with the plastic, nearly all of mine are broken too. I contacted the Customer Service and they gave me the new version of the 18mm Wheel from the 42040 Fireplane.

I guess to turn the hand-pump into a motorised pump without the additional resistance of springs. An alternative would be to use two handpumps phase-shifted, negating the spring forces.

This thing looks gorgeous. The details are astonishing. I like the antenna on the roof Shouldn't the grey panels at the bottom face down?

Land Rover Defender 90
schraubedrin replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Man, this thing looks like a scale model. Didn't you have the width to install a locking differential in the front? How did you realise the compressor, did you find a solution without a constantly slipping clutch gear? -
Your Best Technic Bargains
schraubedrin replied to Kumbbl's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks to many recommendations i searched 8455 and found one for 57€ (63$, 48£). With a jam-stain and missing the A-model instructions but with the box. I'm quite happy about it -

Concerning Playability: Does it stand "sturdy" enough to use the valves? As it's lighter than the Arocs i fear to move the model when making the small movements needed to get small enough movements. And while some movements can be controlled by pumping, the lowering of the arm is always critical. -
This seems to be a viable solution for my problem, thanks! I always assumed this couldn't be the case because i could feel the lockup when applying the slightest force. The critical point has to be the lower red gear, sitting on the axis of 4th gear. There's the greatest relative movement. After confusing my friend with my paradoxical gearbox i'll apply your fix and tell you the outcome.

It's officially 1:8 as noted on the upper right corner of the box. Unofficially someone calculated a value around 1:7,8 or something

I did the Step 5 procedure and implemented your brilliant 90° indexer. I never have any gears double engaging (well expect during gear change ) Everything works quite well, if you look closely you might notice that i tested the motor in reverse-gear, when the second set of bevel gears is engaged. Its because everything else works so nice that i'm so confused.

Hi sariel, what an outstanding review. I always enjoy your thorough "impressions" part As i'm currently fighting with my gearbox, i may have found a little error in When you connected the Motor, it was placed "between" gearbox-output and differential-input. Therefore there couldn't be any difference in wheelspeed from shifting as the differential always got the rpm directly from the motor. Thanks again for your reviews, they are the best way to collect relevant informations of the current LEGO Sets.

Yes, that's exactly what i meant. depending on the gear used in this line there's an extreme jump in turning resistance. You can see that it's not stuck, because the first grey gear worked flawlessly. It's really crazy, i can turn two adjacent 16 tooth gears with my fingers and as soon as i apply more torque to the wrong one the whole drivetrain "locks up" (it still turns but either incredible slowly or with a really high torque). The whole thing just is paradoxical to me. Nope, because the Wheelspeed is determined by the differential speed (this might also be an error in sariel's review )

Sure, it would be the simplest solution for me to have mounted something wrongly. I'm kind of hoping it too However, here's a (very bad) video: (Video as a link, the gear grinding is not for the faint of heart )
