Creating empty, useless topics

Oh, I didn't know that. If there's a general discussion topic or something of the sort, then I would agree with Anio. -
Creating empty, useless topics
sm1995 replied to mahjqa's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I hate to be the devil's advocate, but, I feel like well executed teaser threads ( like Omikron's thread for TC6) should have their place on this board. But then again, I'm brand new member and I haven't really earned my right to speak on matters like this, so please don't take offense to any of this. It's just my opinion that some fun and non-serious topics would help lighten the mood around here. This is like being stuck between a rock and a hard place. If you create a new thread you'd get flamed for making empty topics and if you bump older threads you'd get flamed for doing...well, exactly that. I've seen this happen way too many times in other forums. -

WIP Truck, Rear Suspension

I think it's because of how the shock absorbers are mounted. Anyway... it looks good, but, you could replace those 6x2 steering arms with the much less expensive 5x1 ones and save some $$$. You're gonna have to move the upper pivot further down but still..- 12 replies

Thanks guys, but, lets not get ahead of ourselves and wait till (hopefully) finish the chassis at least Gotcha thx Don't think of it in terms of going left or right, think of it in terms of the number of gears involved. If I go left immediately, there will be only 2 gears meshed which means the output ( connected to the tan 20T gear) would spin in the direction opposite to the input ( black 12T gear). In the system I've used here, since the 16T gear and the 8T gear are connected to the same axle they both spin in the same direction. So essentially it behaves like a system of 3 meshed gears, making the output spin in the same direction as the input. I'm sorry if that wasn't clear enough, I'm not very good at explaining things -
All those years of experience designing (awesome) Lego supercars shines through in this model. I love how the design language is minimalist and clean yet sophisticated at the same time. Amazing

[WIP] Ferrari 458 Speciale

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I really appreciate it. As for the engine placement, I will think about it and see if I can position it higher and if that'll work. Not to sound patronizing, but anything is possible if you put your mind to it. So don't give up! I have no doubt that you can come up with something much better if you really tried. Unfortunately that wouldn't work because the engine acts as a rigid structure that connects the rear axle to the rest of chassis. Removing the molded housing would make it sloppy and weak Haha, that's exactly why I decided to start over from scratch. It seemed like I was "wasting" pieces just for looks and it just wasn't right. This time I'm striving for looks as well as function. Thanks btw :) For the gearbox, yeah because If I go left immediately with and 8T gear the 20T gear would spin in the opposite direction making both 2nd and 4th ( or 1st and 3rd, haven't really looked at the ratios yet) reverse gears. As for the springs, thanks for pointing it out. I haven't had a chance to play around with it yet, so I didn't notice springs buckling under pressure but it makes sense. I'll try to fix it, but the thing is it's really tight around the rear axle, especially because of the chassis structure that comes on top of it. Thanks Kumbbl, as of yet I have no plans for instructions. But if I recall correctly, Nalyd997 has kindly offered to build an LDD model for this once it's done ( not sure). Let's wait and see what happens, who knows the bodywork might turn out abysmal -

Haha thanks but it was and still is far from perfection, but I get what you mean and I can't help it. The structure is somewhat strong, but it's not strong enough. It will get braces for strengthening, I'm still thinking of how I can replicate the ones in the actual car while also actually strengthening the chassis. Yes, the motor is placed low for 3 reasons. 1. The design of the gearbox kinda dictates the motor to be placed at this height. 2. Even If I did find a workaround, looking at underside pics it looks like the 458 has a low placed motor. 3. The intake manifold has 4 straight, vertical inlect tracts that lead to the 2 plenums - so I have to mount the engine rather low for the the plenums to be around the top point of the wheels. I've designed the intake manifold in LDD and the whole thing is about 4 studs tall. So it should work out. Also, Here are some closeups of the gearbox Jeroen -

Beautiful shots! And everything looks great :) I have a question though, wouldn't the wheel hub snap out of the lower wishbone if enough pressure is applied? -

sm1995 replied to sm1995's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well, I wasn't planning on updating this thread until some of the bodywork has been finished, but I've decided to start over from scratch so I thought I'd post a few pictures. So....everything has been completely redesigned. The gearbox, which was 9 studs long measured from the rear axle is now only 6 studs long. It might seem like a small change, but shaving those 3 studs off was really challenging ( for me at least). There's a few issues with friction due to the added complexity, but other than that it works flawlessly. Oh and I've also decided to make the whole thing modular so sorry for stealing your ideas Dikkie Klijn, but I will give you credit for inspiration once everything is done. I hope you don't mind. timslego I posted closeups of the front axle for you. Thanks for reading! As you can see, the gearbox barely extends past the rear wheels. -
Best Technic MOCs
sm1995 replied to Blakbird's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm sorry to bump this old thread again, but this MOC deserves more love. SImply put the best looking Lego car I have ever seen. Plus it's fully modular. Plus the chassis is a replica of the real thing. It looks so mind-bogglingly amazing that even my family members, who don't know anything about Lego...or cars uttered out a "WOW" when they saw it. I'm genuinely lost for words. Amazing stuff. McLaren MP4-12C by Dirk Klijn, on Flickr -

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I wanted to thank every one of you individually but 7 quotes in one post is too many ahaha. Thanks tim, and I will but the chassis is not finalized yet. Once everything is done I'll quietly post a few close ups on my flickr ( without bumping this thread again), so if you could follow me that'd be great. Also spurred on by your request for detailed photos I decided to turn the front axle into a module that can be easily detached by pulling a few pins. So thank you for that -

[WIP] Ferrari 458 Speciale
sm1995 replied to sm1995's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hello everyone! The chassis is mostly finished now, all that's left to do is the intake manifold. Since Ferrari haven't released a picture of the rolling chassis I had to go through dozens of pictures and videos to find out what the chassis and engine assembly looks like. The air filter box took me a while to design because I wanted the mounting point hidden from view. Plus I am TERRIBLE at studful design. While I'm on the topic of air intakes, the position of the air ducts behind the cabin and also by the front axle will most likely change once the bodywork comes on. And I opted not to do a detailed exhaust system because there's no space at the back The front suspension is fairly realistic with unequal length wishbones ( for kingpin inclination) and positive caster ( half stud offset). Here's the flickr album - https://www.flickr.c...2157@N03/0LDgVy I'll also embed a few pictures for your convenience :) Also started working on the bodywork. I had a few ideas this morning so I quickly put together this contraption. I kinda like how it turned out so I'm thinking of making this my starting point. What do you guys think? This is the first time I'm doing bodywork for a car so I'd appreciate some constructive feedback. -
A technic horror?! what?! I think it's absolutely awesome. The only thing I don't like about it are the slightly awkward looking A pillars. I think that replacing them with steering links would look better. Other than that, it looks superb.

Thanks! Oh it's inspired by this awful, terrible Mclaren made by some random kid.... I don't know if you've heard of him though Btw, I already gave you a shout out on the previous page haha, but for reals, I looove your MP4-12C If I'm able to make my MOC at least 25% as good as yours I'll be happy. Updates regarding the actual project, put two orders in on bricklink today ( mainly for the front suspension and some general white panels). I have 0 white pieces as of right now so I'm going to try and recreate the doors using yellow to figure out the pieces I need to order. -
Tow truck 8X2
sm1995 replied to steph77's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yeah I think you're right, it's probably just the angle then. Going from this angle, I feel like regular 62.4*20 truck wheels would suit the model better, but with the drivetrain converted to a 4x2. Anyway, this is great MOC regardless. Good job OP :) -

Very cool! A lot functions from a single motor. Also I really like the design of the truck, but those wheels are too small IMO. -

Haha thanks! Thanks Jeroen! really appreciate the compliment, and I hope I can live up to it. Thanks man, and yeah, I'm a bit worried about that too. I made the gearbox as compact as possible though, I really see no other way of making it shorter other than by using a lot of half liftarms. Hopefully it turns out okay The rear half of the chassis is done! all that's left is to find a way to route the pneumatic tubes for the exhaust pipes and the radiators. Also redid most of the chassis using LBG to better represent the aluminum goodness of the real thing. Constructive criticism is always welcome, let me know what you guys think.
