Sets with many flat tiles and small plates
ReplicaOfLife replied to brickified's topic in General LEGO Discussion
This is the way to go. Tiles and plates in common colors are also sold in bulk by some sellers, so you can accumulate lots of pieces relatively cheap. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I don't want modulars without interiors. I think there wouldn't be that many complaints if the current buildings still had the volume of CC or GG while also having an interior. It's the downsizing that buggers people, e.g. - with the DO - the ridiculous size & interior of the blue/brown side of the building. It has gotten too small to put in a reasonable interior (and I can easily live with them omitting bathrooms or kitchens from residential buildings). If this trend continues, I'll propably resort to building my own modulars, maybe using the official sets as a starting point if I like some architectural details. As for DO, I finally collected all the bricks I need for my MOD/MOC based around it. It will use two sets plus another 1500 or so pieces, clocking in at almost 5000 bricks in total. -

I'm aware of the production limitations. Which makes me even more baffled as to why they included the bricks with groove, and two more without groove. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Part of it, maybe, but the fact that a lot of people who weren't around when they were available in retail want them now plays a role aswell. There were significantly fewer production runs for CC, MS and GG than for the later modulars, which explains the insane prices for those three. But even FB and GE, who were around for a looong time, are approaching the 300-350€/$ mark for MISB sets. This is something that really buggers me about DO. The set just feels as if they were trying hard to get above the 2000 part mark, while not increasing the net weight of the set. There's way more 1x2, 1x3 and 1x4 bricks in there than necessary. Replace those with 1x6 and 1x8, and you could easily save a couple dozen bricks. And some part usages make absolutely no sense. Why, for examply, did they use 14 White Brick, Modified 1 x 2 with Groove in the barber shop when the same job could've been done with any combination of larger white bricks. And why even use the bricks with groove when they achieve nothing and regular white 1x2 bricks were also used in the build? -
[MOC] Modular Ice Cream Parlor (picture heavy)
ReplicaOfLife replied to Mestari's topic in LEGO Town
Very cool idea, and brilliantly executed. Also like the house itself, it looks like a pretty straightforwrad build, but it works very well :) -
They're the ones with grille. Don't think they make the masonry brick in white. Changed my original post to avoid confusion :)

Went to the Lego store in Oberhausen, Germany on friday. Second time I was at a Lego store (there's none near where I live, unfortunately), first time I filled a PAB cup. Looking back, I kinda wish I had filled two, but I also bought the Kwik-E-Mart and spent a lot of money on Bricklink this month for a new MOC, so I felt that that was enough Lego purchases for the time being Here's what I got (one large cup): 64x light bluish grey tile 2x2 22x light blusih grey plate 2x12 22x light bluish grey slope 2x2x2 20x light bluish grey plate 2x2 15x light bluish grey brick 2x6 9x light bluish grey tile with control pattern print 3x light bluish grey slope 2x2 1x light bluish grey brick 1x1 1x light bluish grey plate 1x10 34x white grille brick 1x2 30x white jumper plate 2x2 2x white door 6x white 1x4x3 window frame 34x dark bluish grey brick 1x2 15x dark bluish grey inverted slope 2x2 2x dark bluish grey brick 2x4 1x dark bluish grey plate 4x4 33x tan log brick 1x2 15x tan tile 2x2 4x tan plate 2x4 2x tan plate 2x6 6x green bracket 1x2 - 1x2 6x green plant 3x green brick 1x4 8x gold cone 1x1 2x gold grille 1x2 3x trans-red cone 1x1 3x trans-red round brick 1x1 1x transparent brick without support 1x2 8x lime green brick 1x2 12x reddish brown log brick 1x2 8x black plate 4x8 395 pieces in total. Considering I got a lot of large plates and 15 2x6 bricks, I think I did quite well, even though I got confused during packing - I wanted to get more of the dark bley 4x4 plates and light bley 2x2 slopes, but thought I already had packed some of them in... *d'oh*. I also woud've gotten more of the black 4x8 plates, but the 8 I got were all that were left.

Help with identifying parts/sets!
ReplicaOfLife replied to WhiteFang's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Propably the wrong place to ask this, but can that Hero Factory badge on the chest be connected to regular system pieces in any way? Will the pegs on the back fit anywhere or is this an entirely separate connection system? -
I'm not aware of any way to 'hide' several lots of the same piece. The unique lots feature is there to help you detect exactly what you encountered. Every lot in the shop that matches your wanted list is counted into the total. The (Unique) part tells you how many different parts from your wanted list the shop has. So a shop may have 10 lots for pieces on your wanted list, but if it says "2 unique", then it has any combination between 1 of one and 9 of the other and 9 of one and one of the other. As to why some shops have several lots of the same piece: I guess it depends on how they manage their shop, may be depending on the software they use or also how they store parts. Also I think, whenever someone automatically parts out a set in their bricklink store, a new lot for every piece is created, even if the seller already has teh piece in his inventory

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Sorry, typo. I meant GE (Grand Emporium) -
Nice MOC, like it a lot. And I agree on your thoughts about interiors, i also admire people who manage to cram all those details into little space, I myself mostly don't manage that, so I just follow Lego's course of disregarding a couple of necessities (e.g. bathrooms) in my builds. But my interiors are quite sparse anyway - i want to have them, but since I rarely look at them once the building is finished, I don't mind if they're a bit simplified. I don't tile upper floors, for instance. I'd have to agree with cimddwc here. I think regular 1x2x8 arches would've been a better choice (and more true to your inspiration).

Wow, absolutely brilliant first MOC. Great, harmonious exterior design, and an abundance of details both inside and out! And great parts throughout, you've included several parts I never even knew existed. For example, I wasn't aware that the old 6x5 window existed in brown (actually wasn't aware that Lego even MADE brown parts back in the 70ies), or the old tap piece in old grey/chrome. And I never even saw that chrome mug or that bird's cage before. The old window glass seems to be in great condition, too! Also some npu throughout, e.g. the lotr rings as drawer handles.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
~300€ seems to be the current rate GG is going for, wouldn't call that a bargain. I'd watch Ebay/amazon marketplace closely, sometimes you can find it for significantly less money (250-270€). If you're ok wth getting a used set, you may get even luckier. In any case, if I was you I'd get PS asap, as it's heavily rumored that what's currently being sold is the last batch. -
Very cool! Love the detailing oon the facade, especially around the ground floor windows.

LEGO Ideas Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Real Indiana Jones's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Same here. It was the only one out of the projects I supported. Though I'm a huge fan of the modulars, I never really liked the museum. It felt like a slightly above average MOC for me, and, let's face it, even while it would've been a huge set, it still would've been laughably small for a museum. I could picture it be as the center part of a 96x32 building, but as a stand alone it just doesn't work, imo...kinda like Town Hall, which also only really shines if it's expanded a bit to either side. I don't care for that fighter jet at all, though, but I have a feeling that they may keep this around in case none of the next 13 projects makes it. Don't really see any of those making the cut, even though the medieval market street is a great model. -
Is Bricklinking a set always this hard?
ReplicaOfLife replied to ResIpsaLoquitur's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I imagine it's actually harder to BL a smaller set than a big one: As others said, the best way to tackle this is to create a wanted list that has all the parts you need. Then first check if there's a store that has all the parts on your list. But you'll hardly find a shop that has all the parts you need. This forces you to place several orders, and with a small set, shipping costs will increase your PPP ratio significantly. The best way to tackle this is to go through the wanted list and check for any rare items that are only sold in a few shops. Start with those, and fill up the cart with other parts you need and the shop has. So far, I BLed a modified Cafe Corner, a Blue Grocer and a 3500 piece MOC. I work with several browser tabs: One has my Wanted list and the others all are open to different stores that I'm ordering from. Then I basically go through my Wanted list and check which store has each part, and order it in the required quantity. Obviously, I sometimes come across parts that no shop has, so I start another order - and whenever I start a new order, I iterate back and check if that new shop has some pieces I already ordered elsewhere for a cheaper price. It's a lengthy process, but I think it's well worth it, and actually enjoy it quite a bit . I managed with 6 orders for Café Corner and 8 for my MOC. Green Grocer took 12 orders, but it was my first time trying this and so I made some mistakes. -
Very well done, as usual. Great architecture and nice details.

Review: 31036 Creator Toy and Grocery Shop 3-in-1
ReplicaOfLife replied to mostlytechnic's topic in LEGO Town
Thanks for the nice & detailed review! I have to agree with those criticizing this set - it just feels unfinished, and it wants to be too much at the same time. Either throw in another 500 bricks and come up with something similar to Bike Shop & Cafe, or just build one smaller structure with the pieces in here. The building/interior sizes are ridiculous in the main model. They're supposed to be buildings, but have next to no interior space. From this review, I have to say that the C build works best for me when viewed just as a small kiosk. I really would've liked another set in the vein of Bike Shop & Cafe (bought two of those as a base for a future modular moc), especially with the sand green color, but this just doesn't seem worth it. -
The Fishmaster - a salmon-colored modular building
ReplicaOfLife replied to cimddwc's topic in LEGO Town
Fishmaster, apprentice & the seventh seagull....you nailed it :D As usual, excellent building, and nice work on incorporating those strange pieces. -
Pretty sure they are supposed to be lights. I guess they were aiming at a design similar to this: http://www.riesenrad.info/www/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/bellevue_main.jpg

Great design. The color scheme reminds me of a color scheme that was employed by Deutsche Bundesbahn in the 70ies, though rolling stock with those colors was around up until the 90ies..

Thanks for sharing this, it was a nice read. The scale of this model is just mindblowing, and it's one of the best building designs in Lego for me too. Congratulations on going through with this!
