Great looking set. Just wish they had come up with a more unique name for it - "Coaster" is a slightly unimaginative name for a coaster (even though "Rollercoaster" or the respective term in the local native language is propably the most common name for rollercoasters out there...). Very certainly won't get it (as 300€+ is more than I'm willing to pay for a single Lego set), but if I did that would be the first thing I'd change. It also feels that at that price, they really could've thrown in the motor. ...and that's a lot of white 2x2 bricks.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I'd go for the Assembly Square. The Downtown Diner or the Parisian Restaurant might work as well. The Detective's Office is tiny and would propably look out of place in the awesome first generation modular line-up you have. It's a completely different scale than GG or FB... Assembly Square, on the other hand, is the same height as Pet Shop or Grand Emporium. Only possible downside I can see is that the design of AS heavily references 3 of the buildings you already own (CC, PS and GE). However, that might work in your favor as well, it's really a matter of personal taste. -
Nice work, as usual. A Lego store is a nice way to place all those self-referencing tiles and minifigs within a modular city. I can't even begin to wrap my head around the snot-work around the windows. Exceptional. Where does this go in your city?

Looking good. Just bougt a misb set without the figures at bricklink, so I'll see what I can come up with. Adding an extra floor to the medium dark flesh building is a must, imho - the way it is originally designed it looks rather top heavy, since the roof is higher than the floor beneath.

That medium dark flesh building looks really cool. I think this set is a good starting point for a modular, even though you pretty much only get the facades. A little more depth would make it a lot more useful as a parts pack.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Yep, same here. In general, the tl;dr-culture you see at most places nowadays really took away a lot of what discussion boards once used to be. Which I find pretty sad. Anyway, regarding @Overcold's post, I agree on most parts, with the exception of: - too small buildings like Al's or the laundromat are not ok in my book - they have laughable interiors/interior space and thus shred any sense of realism the modulars usually manage to evoke - I don't like the linear stories at all. I love the ambient ones, though. But I also think that pretty much all modern Lego sets are scripted way too much, thus disencouraging children from making up their own characters, stories and little worlds...but maybe that's just me. - and all cars that aren't strictly necessitated by the building (i.e. the Fire truck and a potential police car, if we should get a police station some day) imho are a waste of parts that had better gone into more structure/more details. -
As a building, this is not my taste at all (brutalist architecture rarely tends to be...), but as a Lego model, this is absolutely stunning. If it wasn't for the foliage and visible studs on the roof, you might mistake it for a scale model, or maybe even a photograph of an actual building.

Nice work, can't wait to see it in the brick!
-
They sure are (or rather, were :(). With the exception of the toy shop (which leaned a bit too heavy on 1x bricks and specialized parts), I got multiples of all of them, just because they yielded so many bricks I could use.
-
Nice work. Creating a building from just those three sets with their different color palettes is a real challenge, and you've pulled it off very well.

LEGO Ideas Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Real Indiana Jones's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Regarding the Arcade: It's a very nice build, with some excellent building techniques, but I seriously doubt that it's compliant with the Ideas house rules: Considering the bulk of the building and the high grade of detailing (especially in the updated version), I'm pretty sure that it has far more than 3000 pieces. Not sure if that would be enough to dismiss it in the review, but it certainly won't be in its favor. -
Passed 100 supporters today - only a hundred more weeks like that and I'll hit 10.000

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I find it very amusing that he only managed to shrink the Barber Shop part of DO by basically taking out one floor...it's almost as if that building was way too small to begin with... Anyway, cute idea and nice execution. I still wish Lego would continue to produce this older style of 3in1 buildings instead of those horrendous "modular" abominations we get nowadays in their stead. -
Thanks for the shout-out

Simple: Gathering that amount of support takes a lot of stamina. You have to promote your project on as many channels as possible for a long time - and you need a big enough following, or at least be very active on those channels for it to really work. Being lucky enough to be selected as staff pick on Ideas may help a lot, too. In other words: Unless you are either very active or/and already have four-figure followings on several sites (facebook, flickr, instagram etc.) and promote your project again and again, it just will fade into obscurity. Since I'm only active on two forums and on flickr, it'll be interesting to see how far I'll get with this. I'm confident that I'll get the additional year for 100 supporters, but above that it's anybody's guess. Yes, I considered putting my other buildings on there, but I'm propably too honest - I respect the 3000 pieces limit Ideas has, and as they are, both vastly exceed that (Outdoor Store 3500, Sideways Building > 4200), and taking out a floor absolutely ruins the proportions in both cases, so that isn't an option, either.

Oh cool, didn't see you had a topic here aswell! As I already commented on flickr, this is amazing work. I never would've thought that a building could use the bright green colors and still look good!

Thanks @DK_Titan ! Having those overhanging floors was a must. There's some places where you can easily pass each other in small, narrow streets, but up above, the roofs of the buildings almost touch bcause everyone maximized their floor space Thanks It's reddish brown, btw, hope I didn't edit those colors to death...though I did very little editing on these pictures, safe for editing out the background on the exterior shots. I figured out a few MOCs back that doing close-ups with figures in the shot makes for much nicer pictures than just empty buildings. I'm glad you feel the same way! Yes, I actually dismantled some of it, but only for the pics of the ground floor. You can actually see the studs of the exterior wall on the right of the pic with the couple & waiter inside the restaurant . For the upper floors, I just rested the camera directly upon the walls, sometimes zooming in a bit. Thanks, very glad you like it. Looking forward to seeing your first MOC. The sand green part is intended to represent a later addition to the building...rather ironically, as now it has that unused room upstairs ;-) Hope I can gather some support on Ideas, though it will be hard. But ~50 supporters after one and a half days ain't too bad, I think. Tell all your friends! Thanks! Originally, I had planned to only make the roof detachable, and have the front and back walls of the upper floor fixed to the floor. That did not work. At all. A funny side-effect of that is that now there's actually an unpictured piece of furniture for the appartment that separates with the roof...

Whoa, I remember marveling at that theater a long while back, thanks for digging that out. One of the most ambitious and well-though-through Lego creations I ever saw!

I can only repeat what everyone above me said - absolutely georgeous building. It's very hard to recreate a classicistic building on a standard modular footprint, but you pulled it off with ease!
-
Hello everyone, it's finally time to reveal my latest modular building to you! This building is inspired by the leaning, half-timbered houses you can still find in the old, medieval town centres of many cities across central Europe. Being from the town of Esslingen in southern Germany, I've loved these old buildings since I was a young kid, and am in the very lucky position to now actually live in one of them. The building was inspired by buildings from around my hometown aswell as buildings in other cities, but it is not modeled after a specific building. Instead; I tried to capture the main defining features of this kind of building - namely jettying of the upper floors, a steep, gabled roof, a big window beneath the gable which was used to haul in goods (the uppermost floors were used for storage) and a stone-built ground-floor. The somewhat rich facade decorations are a figment of my imagination, inspired by buildings built or renovated much later. Some stats: Piece count: ~3750 Height: 35cm Features an asian restaurant, a veterinarian and two apartments Design first started in July 2017, but then I paused for almost three months. After another pause during much of November and December, design was finished at the start of February 2018. And the best thing: I put a three storey version of it on Lego Ideas: Please vote for it if you like it! https://ideas.lego.com/projects/033f7603-82f3-4447-8a4c-64bc92e7ed1f But enough talk, let's get on to the pictures! The asian restaurant is nicely decorated with dragon murals, an old Samurai sword, themed images on the smoked-glass windows, and old disks inscribed with sacred inscriptions...or so. The couple enjoys a nice evening here, accompanied by a good wine. The kitchen is a little bit cramped, retrofitted into an old cellar. Still, enough room to cook delicious meals! On warmer days, the beautiful, shaded outside seating area is a nice way to escape from the stress of modern times. The first floor houses the veterinarian's office. First thing up the stairs is the reception counter. The house may be very old, but the furniture and IT equipment here is very modern! Who would've thought that the dog's skull looked like that under all that fur? The overhead cabinet contains everything that might be needed. The second floor houses the first of two apartments. There's a nice, old armchair with a beautiful old lamp, mainly used for reading. There's a disused room on this floor, unconnected to the apartment... luckily, the apartments occupant loves all living things, regardless of the number of their legs! Beneath the steep roof, there is yet another apartment. Deviating from classic modular fashion, the entire facade lifts off together with the roof! The young man living here loves to play the guitar. As usual, more pictures are available in the flickr album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/131278188@N08/albums/72157666886273808 And again: If you like my MOC; please support the accompanying project on Lego Ideas: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/033f7603-82f3-4447-8a4c-64bc92e7ed1f Hope you enjoyed this, Tobias

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Yeah, the flesh building part of DO is alright. The blue building basically is just a staircase with a toilet and a kitchen in it. Thing is, the set doesn't look at all bad from the outside. It's just that what it seems to be portraying, and what actually fits inside are two entirely different things. As for AS, yeah, the upper-floor access through the bakery is propably its its weak point, along with the external staircase. But I can overlook that as the buildings themselves have a decent enough footprint, and the interiors are great. And iIt would be easy enough to mod the set to have an actual, separate and enclosed staircase for those two buildings, whereas DO would require a complete overhaul. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Yep. Those stories, and especially the awful design decisions they led to, are the low point of the entire modular series. DO was already pretty bad, with the blue/brown building being absolutely useless except for the ground floor, but that laundromat section of BB was even worse. The way it's tacked on there is so ridiculous it makes me cringe. Luckily, they seem to have abandoned that with AS and DD. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

7 months is quite a lot, actually. Don't forget, they do that for a living. If we project 40h a week, you can get a LOT of design work done in seven months. I never tallied how long it takes me to design a MOC, but I guess it'd boil down to about two to three working weeks of work...about 60-100 hours, approximately. Plus they have others they can consult. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ReplicaOfLife replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I miss those buildings, too. I bought several copies of the Bike Shop, the Corner Cafe and that last one they did (forgot what it's called) as parts packs, and would have loved it if Lego continued the general theme. The new "modular" 3 in 1 houses are plain rubbish, imho - none of them looks very good, there's not that much you can do with the modular aspect, and some of the features depicted are just ridiculous (a ski slope atop a house? yeah, right...same goes for the skateboard halfpipe.). Plus, due to the design of this modules, they also suck as parts packs. But to be honest, building-wise the Creator line has been going downhill for ages now. Remember wayyy back when they would also release huge family homes and villas? Those just got smaller and smaller, and nowadays they are gone completely. It's a shame, really.
