For those doesn't understand what is the advantage of not loosing current instead of aiming for more capacity of standard batteries(longer running time) it is pretty simple: Lipo batteries (as 8878) have got a nominal voltage of 7.4V (6 alkaline ones heve got 9 and nimh, so standard rechargeable 7.2) but this voltage, that theld be roughly represented by motor speed and led brightness, doesn' fell of to the "discharged" state linearly (ex when you have 3.7V you have half of the battery "capacity") but instead it remains more or less 7.4V until it suddenly drop to a lower voltage ad you need to recharge the BB. Alkaline/normal rechargeable batteries has got a really different vbehaviour while discharging and in fact you have a good voltage only the first few minutes and then the battery "power" start slowly dropoff until the end. Just to give an example, if we make a race (untill battery dead) with two clone cars that differ only in the BB, the standard battery one will slowly loose speed, the lipo one will have more or less the same speed until it dies (but maybe win the race). But (second example) if we need to run a gbc module not worrying to much about balls per minute but that need to run for a whole day, then the standard batteries will be better

All lego battery boxes has a protection that limit the output to 750mah (but on bursts it may go higher)

[TC11] Wheeled Scorpion
PKW replied to PKW's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
thanks, i've made some progress! here a video of the main weapon mechanism in action, it uses the same mechanism of flippy but a really stronger version and with better performances (instant relase instead of some cm of travel) and it is now at half the target power but i don't now if the mechanism can handle the power i want: also i have some more photos of the internal electronics that i've added back, one wheel was dismounted during weapon mechanism implementation: -

Good build, maybe fast, but id doesn't looks really maneuverable due to poor steering, also how much does te spinner weight? Because 750rpm are quite low, i wonder if it compensates with the mass, the looks is really good indeed!- 15 replies

Just use YouTube video editor to put them in a row and you'be done! Is free, requires videos already on your YouTube and you can also add titles with that, just try it there are some tutorials too -
Hi all, i've finally started my tc11 entry, i was playing around some building techniques i've improved on all my project and i initially wanted to build a robot with a razer like drive (omniwheel at the back and normal wheels at the front) but i found that drive inefficient and with a lot of friction, so i decided to built the "most compact 4x4 rubber-band powered flipper + lifter combo " and i'm not sure how it will end, but i came up with a concept chassis (it has working drive and lifting wedglets and it comes from the first idea of my entry (a sliding disk bot, but there are too many spinners here)), the problem is that i need to fit there the reloading motor (XL) the battery box and the two receivers/sbrick and i'm not sure i can (mainly because i've built a lot of compact robots and there were a lot more space than in this one) so i may came back to design a more efficent 4wd omni+standard drive and have a bigger footprint but i'm not sure, meanwhile (i'm currently building the mechanisms) enjoy the concept: drive: 2 XL motors, 4WD with friction gears main weapon: rubber-band powered flipper v2 (hoping for 2hg flipping, before it was ~1) reloaded by and xl motor secobndary weapon: lifting wedglets powered by and M motor (no electronics here) current size: 26x27 stud, with retracted weapon(battle position)

i like the idea too! this bot looks funny to play, if you success to add some mass on the "blade" (?) that will have an enough powerful kick to be effective against some other bots. PS: i love fast tracked veichles -

I really love this build and how compact it is, but I see that drive is really compact, even with 1.6:1 gearing the bot will be quite difficult to drive and have low power on turning (trust me also because the battery box is on the back) do you have L motors to use? And maybe a way to move the CoM more on the front of the bot?- 21 replies

Your build is impressive, but I don't like how big it is, (this is something about my hissing criteria) so I really fear that it will became sluggish and with problems on turning when you put up the weight of the battery boxes and other things, so I really need a video to decide about the vote I would give to this. I mean, if the voting criteria will be "how cool and mechanically complex a bot is" you'll take my 10, but instead there is a "signature move" and "likeliness to win a battle" and I heard someone saying "you should imagine all bot scaled to the same size if you need to compare them" well I don't like 45x45 because most robot would be ineffective and because robot wars has no size limit so I would scale all robots to 1kg and I don't think this design will be effective/so simple to do if you should make it with only 4 motors and 1 BB (as 1kg bot allow to) About the signature move itself it looks impressive but also ineffective, as ramming spikes were never useful in real combat even the grabber (that just can't like considering the weight of other robot) looks to small to have and effective grab on other bots like a lego deadlock will http://twitter.com/DeadlockRW/status/789827399227670528?s=09 Keep in mind that those are only the critics, if I have to judge concept/realization and looks you'll have 10! unfortunately the current has no limit on weight but only on size, so is is the opposite of modern robot wars, buti really hope one day lego robot wars will be something like trial trucks races, with defined rules and dedicated meetings. btw post the video out of the "hidden contents click to show" part, EB forum recognize youtube link and auto embed them so just write the link (http not https) and the magic is done! good work so far!

This is a really good start! i love one man army bots, and yours looks good even without armor, just a couple of questions, will you make the grabber "grippier"? because it looks like it can't keep legos into it due to shape and liftarm smooth surfaces there, as for its crushing power, i can say don't trust on that for lego, they are just too strong to be affected by that, the only good result i acheived was using a mechanism to gain 1.5kg of crushing power and put a brick separator on the jaw end, but that one too wasn't effective so hoping for a good grabber from you ;) the other thing i can sa is that if you find a mechanical endpoint that act as releaser then the whole mechanism will be really cool and you'll may can use that channel not for the servo but to transform the jaw in a grabber/lifter arm that would be really impressive. good work!

IMHO the best of the big size bots that are joining the contest great work! Did you tested the weapon on something? -

can't exactly guess the size, but my internal chassis for a carbide replica is really similar to that one, any plan on making a huge carbide but disk armed? -

this is a really interesting gravity axe, there are not so effective but if you acheive to keep the axe longer than 45stud is could be enought powerful to be effective against lego! also you really need to pgrade tracks (that imho are the weak point) and maybe add a small wedge on the front that will make the whole thing looks more aggressive (and even useful) also tracks can be flat too, no need to use space/complex building techniques to give that "D" shape. oh and it reminds me mega melvin- 15 replies

really strong and good speed (ehm the fastest here maybe but not really fast) excellent work with it, also i know wheels are attached with the new hubs so i think even a grabber will struggle to remove them -

Drive system looks good and strong, but (as Said to the regicide builder) worm gear are not soo efficient, are you using 1:8 or 1:24 gear reduction? And what about turning speed? Looking forward too a video but I see a really good professed here, also because higher friction of the wheels will matter when transferring disk energy to the opponent bot. Another good think is the almost squared footprint that helps steering, a 4wd bot will steer better as long as it is shorter and larger, but square is a good compromise! If you are looking to update the drive I suggest something like: gear reductions-> conical gears (like hypnodisk drive) so by removing friction under high torque you can keep speed the same but gain pushing power, that is always a good thig -
Thaks for specify this! I thought that rules for tc6 still here (the small off road model that was changed but not 100% was able to participate) Do this mean that if I'be built something like a rubber band powered flipper and I want to use the flipper arm u need to redesign the shape but I can keep the lever? Because there is only one way to build that weapon so i'm forced to at least copy the geometry even if everything else will be different (we are talking of a setup of 20 pieces) it is like to say hey i'm using a lego gearbox and they are made all in the same way so i'm forced to use the same pieces setup, not a copy of something I made but a replica of an existing lego mechanism shared by a lot of builds Also if I can give an opinion about hypnodisk replica I think that it should be allowed to compete since it is a lot different from the mock up chassis he made than other build presented in other contests were (but I also think my opinion shouldn't weight much)

[MOC] HYPNODISK!
PKW replied to allanp's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Really good, it's a shame it can't enter the competition, but here my thoughts: Excellent drive, it is really good how it pivot on the front like the real hypnodisk, I feared that real grippy wheel will stuck it but a light back and lower grip well make it drive really good! The kick is good enough to smash a small lego build, but i that that against some better build (and mainly against a vertical spinner or a great axe) it might break itself, not sure about that because it is really though on the external, how much does it weight? Have to say that it is a really excellent build because I see no weak point (except that is lego and so it is not invincible xD) and it has a really good look congratulations! PS: I only need some angled connector and that old turntable but i'd really love to build it and mare it fights my bots! -

(I'm answering with "x)" answers because it is a hell to have a good multi quote on my phone) 1) You're not really sounding rude because you've made a really hard work on that weapon and I know you are focusing and spending on that, but topics are made to collect opinions from other user so I just gave mine. 2) showcase a robot that has the aim to impress voters and if voters should vote for robot performances then manoeuvrability is one of the most important in real robot wars and in lego one too, that's my point, but I have nothing against the fact that you may want just to make a big badass weapon and have a strategy like "no matter where i move my weapon is so deadly and we'll built that everything will touch it will be destroyed" and you are going good to get to this goal, but maybe showcasing a really slow robots that take a lot of time to get near something (like BB you used) isn't the best? Again this is my opinion 3) yes these bot are not made to fight in the real arena, but they will virtually fight in voters mind and also a voting criteria is "likeliness to win a battle" As for making my feedback better what I was suggesting is something like " I see a really slow gearing here, test it, you may be able to increase the speed and get a more aggressive built, it will be another pint on your side" 1) thank you! I'm trying my best to just find weak points on all the build I see and report then to the creator, i've seen lot of builder not paying attention to the drive system and that'a a shame for many reasons, even playability! 2) That is perfect what I want to add is: this is a forum contests, keep fun and use feedbacks/comments to learn and get better! But I guess not all members are ok with the "any comment is welcome, critics are appreciated" but this is how I think it should be and I give both critics and congratulations. -

I don't know how many fights you've made with lego or non lego battlebots but i can say winning is determinated by 3 factors: LUCK, driving skill, reliability. unfortunately in most fights the main weapon or the whole robots doesn't really matter, but since we have to vote the robot and not the driver i can argue that a "sluggish" bot can't be driven well even by the best driver and most of other bot can outmaneuver it and have all the "control" judging criteria. Consider that avoiding damage will make an "effective weapon" just useless because there will be no contact in the fight, not to mention that it will be really easy for the house robot to destoy your bot and also (since you are taking inspiration by SoW) remember how SoW ended up: its own wepon break the robot iself, so focusing on the weapon is not the main aim of robot wars sorry. -

That new drive place your bot in 2nd place on my tierlist (before is was at the bottom) congratulations! Also good work on the new spinner gearing and spinner pivot support, still don't like the spinner bar but looks really tough now and this is a good point- 10 replies

The chassis keep looking good but that "drum" has got roo many teeth and it is to light to cause any damage IMHO, any plan fir a bigger drum with maybe only 1 or 2 teeth? I can suggest you to take inspiration from beetle weight drum spinners, they have a particular 4 teeth design that is really cool

Please man balance that thing! You'll gain rpm too, start with a bar and then try with a weapon more similar to SoW, btw your drive looks really slow, do you want to fight the regicide and hope that battery won't discharge before the first hit? I also think that you can't build a faster threaded voucher due to the amount of weight it will have with that much BB, good work but that's why I don't like big build for lego battle bots, looking forward for the spinner weapon edit i've just regicide speed up so you are the slowest :P it is defending tactic to have a shell spinner?
