[WZ3:G15 Desert King] Knocking on the Wrong Door
mccoyed replied to MassEditor's topic in Guilds of Historica
Maybe my favorite build from you. There's a wonderful composition here, not just the colors but the shaping of the entire build. It has major silhouette, which is something you have a serious eye for. I often go for that with my own builds, and wind up forgetting where I started or just failing to account for some obscuring detail by the time I photograph. You're one of the best on GoH for merging interesting technique, high-quality finish, and that special composition element that just makes the production value overall soar. -
Amazing. I love that bridge.

It's been a while since we last saw Alva Tyrnsdottir, but she's been very busy ranging and scouting on behalf of Jarl Asbjorn and the jarldom of Arnarvhall in western Mitgardia. Rumors of the attacks in the North have spread even to Tradewind Bay, the Woody Hills, and the forests of Arnarvhall. As such, Asbjorn has ordered the rediscovery and rebuilding of old defenses at the borders of the region. In conjunction with dwarven and elven neighbors, a defensive alliance has formed. Alva Tyrnsdottir leads a group of Arnarvhalli scouts into the eastern reaches in search of old holdfasts, towers, and fortifications. Here she has found the ruin of a stone watchtower that still commands an impressive view of the surrounding countryside. It is an excellent candidate for rebuilding. Builder's Note: This picture doesn't really do justice to one or two elements of the build. I'll post another one when I have better lighting. Here are those other angled shots to better show off the tower ruins and the tree growing out of em :D

Thanks LJ! Darn right! How do you like the architecture? I have to admit I spent a lot of time looking at Everlast, Mpya Stedor, and related builds to make sure I did it justice. Very fun to use these colors for me. Rockwork is not my strongsuit. I look at some of the stuff people pull off, and I just can't imagine how they do it. I definitely realize mine needs work and I'm always trying to find a style/look I like but never quite get there. This was an attempt to leave some studs for a more broken look, but it feels a bit haphazard doesn't it? I would want something not too smooth, actually, but definitely with better "flow" than it turned out. Alas! When I realized I could make those barrels stay on AND include a bit of an awning to keep the sun off em? Great success! Thanks LV. Thanks Kai. I appreciate that, though I have to agree with the others who've mentioned it could use some work. The Republic! I agree about it too. I've seen some of your stuff, Adair, and I can't fathom how you get the results you do. Is there any specific builder or tutorial you could recommend? I try to learn as much as I can from Soccerkid by looking at his builds, but he has a mastery of execution that I can't match. For people who do more SNOT and exotic techniques, like yourself, I'm intimidated a bit by how difficult it seems and get frustrated experimenting. But hey, The Republic!

The High Council have been running Kaliphlin for a while. They've picked up a few tricks no doubt. Thanks LV! Well... if Lady Akantha gets her way... Thanks Adair. It's minimal due to the focus on figs and the way SarahJoy is carefully planning Ruadh. Thanks ME!

Knowing their allies are desperate for supplies, the High Council sends an agent along with a pair of highly-respected Goldpike mercenaries to protect a relief shipment of supplies. They expect to be attacked if they move in the open, so another route was necessary. To get through the secret and narrow passes in the rocky terrain that surrounds Mpya Stedor, a Leander Ostrich-Wrangler was also tapped for the job. Unlike the "gifts" of the so-called Desert King, the High Council's support comes with no strings attached. And besides, just what is that mummy pouring into the water barrel anyway!? Is his lieutenant negotiating with the Everlast officer, or is he providing a convenient distraction for some nefarious chicanery? Have you ever met a desert mummy? NOTE: This build isn't intended to be untitled. Oops, I thought I'd put a title in before hitting "post". Can a mod please add the title: Keeping Everlast Supplied.

It's a freebuild. The Ruadhi are officially neutral, but the HC is trying to snag some of the young warriors into the war effort. It's part of the joint story for Ruadh (mostly the minotaurs) that SarahJoy and I have been sort of working on for a while now. It'll play out over the course of the war, but like her own Council build, it's not really for the challenges. EDIT: I've put links into the two relevant builds, SarahJoy's and mine, that inform this one. Hopefully it makes more sense!

WZ4, HC VS DK Nobles, cavaliers, and gentry made up a huge section of the initial High Council support. Ever since the Civil War broke out, propaganda has been issued by both the Desert King and the Ulandians about how far away the aristocrats are from the common Kaliphlinite, and how little such people cared about the way the war would affect their farms, their wells, and all the ways they work to live. Ulandus and the King alike have tried to cast themselves as the champions of the common people, with the Council in the role of the moustache-twirling elite. Well, some of these elites believe pretty strongly in matters of honor. The rich and titled swordsmen called "Bravos" invented the heavily ritualized and pseudo-artistic system of duelling as a way to settle such things. This particular Bravo, Jakon Keros, comes to Bella'Erezhi fully intending to teach the High Council's enemies some proper manners. With his weight leaning on his back-foot, he looks nervous and unsure of himself, like the slightest pressure from his Desert Mummy adversary will send him tripping to the ground. But as with most things refined, looks seldom tell the whole story. BUILDER'S NOTE: I didn't make a thread for this. Hopefully that's okay.

Recently, the Tauri of the Ruadhi Brute Squad have noticed that their humble atelier has received a visit from a lady of distinction. The Alikos Tribe have long been isolationist, and even in their settlement at Ruadh, they rarely see Tauri from the outside world. This Lady Akantha, who claims to speak with the authority of the High Council, is unlike anyone of their own kind that they've ever seen. Some whisper that she seems "too human" and her words are "fancy trickery" while others, especially the young bulls, are smitten with her sophistication, her accent, and her tasteful accessorization. At the council meeting in Ruadh, where she was invited to speak in order to make a case against the settlement's neutral position in the war, she was accused of openly recruiting Brute Squad Tauri into the High Council militia. She doesn't deny it. In her eyes, the Tauri must stand and fight as one. To strengthen her claims, she flaunts her Tauri bodyguards, two bulls who long ago left their home tribes to join the cosmopolitan society of Kaliphlin. Lady Akantha speaks to both the bulls and the heifers, since in the Alikos Tribe, both genders learn the art of war. She holds in her hand a map of Ruadhi territory and beyond, showing that even with the stated position of neutrality, the High Council believes that sooner or later the atelier will be captured or worse. She weaves together both rousing patriotism and conciliatory sympathy in her speech. The older bulls and cows mutter that they've heard this like before, but the youngsters are riveted and listening...

Desert Aqueduct [WZ2: G12, High Council]
mccoyed replied to LittleJohn's topic in Guilds of Historica
Gorgeous. I feel like this one incorporates the best elements from earlier aqueduct builds like mine (angled structure) and Disco86's (the pump device). Great work, this has got to be one of the best builds for the Kali civil war thus far.- 22 replies

Great color scheme and table. The pic is also nicely angled to see all the figs clearly. I also totally see the rings on Akantha's horns now haha.

Brethren of the Brick Seas?
mccoyed replied to Admiral Croissant's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
A mysterious island or chain of islands makes sense for a pirate era pseudo-fantasy role-building game. It's in keeping with the kinds of myths and flavor we'd be going for with Brethren. That said, we'd want to avoid too many artificial limitations or "boxing in" of fantastical elements. If we do it that way, there'll be some discord in the lore/world-building with some builders doing their thing as if those fantastical elements don't exist at all. This is convenient for people who don't like that stuff, or prefer not to have it here, and it's also a strategy for being inclusive and not overly limiting anyone's fun with the setting... but it's also pretty contrived. It's like seeing the pixels on a digital image. A general note about good social responsibility in works of fantasy which we should observe here: And although the distinction between "civilized" and "uncivilized" was inherent to the imperial/colonial period, I think we ought to be aware of the ugly history of that in our work. This doesn't mean avoiding issues like slavery, genocide, and othering in the imperial/colonial context, but it does mean taking some responsibility for portrayal or reference without condoning or promoting. I think this is probably an issue that's been discussed sometime in the development of GoH, but I think it's very important to remember it since our current era is very much still recovering from and reconciling with the uglier parts of this chapter of history. -
Great work here and the new techniques are invisible. I'm wondering if you could show off some of the stuff you're talking about, since it's invisible in the build? Like some tutorial WIP pics or something?

Brethren of the Brick Seas?
mccoyed replied to Admiral Croissant's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Let's not pretend that building in LDD is not a skillset. I can't be bothered with it, personally, because I find it more of a challenge than building with bricks. Having all that freedom plus the nuances of the LDD UI and mechanics... just too much for me. But I have a lot of respect for people who make beautiful MOCs with it. I feel like using the GoH setup is best here. Let each challenge basically include a ruling about what the LDD restrictions/allowances will be. Main challenges that require story intensive MOCs may not allow LDD, but I see no reason why LDD should be excluded from doing extremely parts and time intensive fig-scale ships. -
Beautiful landscaping and clever use of foliage!

A King Reborn (Challenge IV Prelude, Chapter 18)
mccoyed replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
This makes the Desert King a very gray figure, much more complex than "evil lich bent on world domination". Bravo! -
Great well. That roof just stands out even though everything else is impeccable also!

Aqueduct Occupation [WZ2:G12, Desert King]
mccoyed replied to Disco86's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks Disco, and I totally agree! -
Thanks. I don't know where I even got those but was glad to find a use for them! Thanks, Ces! One of the things I like about CHIMA is that it can be really, really versatile. I don't love the head-helmet pieces very much, but everything else is awesome for fantasy stuff. Thanks SK. I do regret not making a border for the base. I've been slacking on that lately...
-
Thanks Goliath. Thanks, but the Yukar go where the Best MacLean tells them. Thanks SK. I was so happy when I discovered I had exactly eight of those little things. They are pretty useless as actual catapults in MOCs, after all. War ain't cute! Thanks, Cap'n.

Great vig. Nice posing, especially on the two guys in the water. Also love how you made the crocodile look submerged.
