Beautiful - like pretty much everything I've ever seen you make from Lego! 2 thumbs well up fella

Well since my son's only 5 I've found that d6 mechanics work best for the time being - he can cope with d6 probabilities (particularly if I've scribbled out some examples in chalk on his blackboard!) but I'm all up for thrashing out some systems with you if you're up for that? Shall we take this to a PM and then set up a new forum post when we have something concrete to share?

LEGOHammer FTW! I can't give you any firm dates as to when mechanics/game experience will be available... but I'll keep you informed for sure! Thank you - funnily enough its only been a couple of weeks but I've developed some of the core units even more since the vid was taken. Once I post the support / command troops I'll have to finally declare the army "finished" (at least for a while!) otherwise I'll endlessly tinker...

In the region of 135 CMF goblins... ...well *somebody* has to stand up to my elf army!
-
Definitely going for a homebrew on that one... although I can't deny that I've had, shall we say, certain influences in the past! LEGOHammer <---- you heard it here first!

Thank you - definitely a labour of love - and fun to do with my son! And as for the gaming... Absolutely... The trays and the unit types are very much for gaming... I have a *little* bug bear when I see "armies" of 10,000+ minifigs all on huge baseplates - all looking the same and none having weapons. To me that's not an army - its a collection - impressive in its way but not really something you can get down and play with... the idea of this is for it to be used for battles. When we get those dice rolling I'll get some videos posted too! D

like it a LOT! Smart work - particularly like the custom hammer... although the antlers are... BIG! (not sure if you're purist but Brickwarriors do antlers that might work well there I think)

March with us Wardancer... bring your Elf-kin into the heart of the greenskin lands and lay waste to both goblin and orc!! I imagined there might be a wild horse or two in the forests for the Elves to use - but I felt that the majority should be on foor. And trust you to pick up on the head detail... I wanted to try and add a little variation to even the rank and file (not always possible with a limited amount of cheek lined yellow heads but I didn't want just all the same mini x1000!) plus I wanted to include a significant number of She-Elves too... nearly half of all the ranged troops are female (not including the scouts who are skirmishers so are melee fighters too). The Battle Trays were very much designed in conjunction with army building (and more importantly fighting) in mind... look out BrickLink - I seriously need to buy more black elements - they sure go quick when there's a lot of minis! D P.S: Will try to get the rest of the parts up soon - just have to *cough* adjust some headpieces!

Leaning as I do to the Woodland side of the fantasy spectrum I feel I should invade this icky greenskin topic and march my Wood Elf army straight into proceedings... http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=105135 Death to all the greenie meanies! (well - until I start building a greenskin army obviously... I means someone's going to have to invade the forests aren't they!) much love D

Nice Griffins you two... I've had mine sitting around for ages (same idea you guys had at about the same time too so didn't want to flood the boards with Griffin after Griffin!) Again mine is slightly different but same mix of parts - although I went for eyes and no stickers - more like zabdiels... well, here goes nothing!
-
Well here goes... This is just the core part of my yellow flesh wood elf army. I've tried to think about unit roles and racial characteristics when determining army composition. My follow up videos will explain the design process and thinking behind each unit. More to follow (but C&C always welcome at any stage) Much love D

When is a custom not a custom...
nine09nueve replied to nine09nueve's topic in Minifig Customisation Workshop
Hmm - then what about AmperZand's recent Mind Flayer (looks wholly purist to me) as does some of the DnD class minifigs..? By your definition Risgynsgrot they aren't classed as customs? But then they're posted in this forum? Yours intriguied, curious and slightly confused! :D D -
Dear beautiful brickers of the euro persuasion and otherwise... (First post on the big boys and girls forum of the MCW so be gentle!) I was in conversation with Wardancer recently and the following thought struck me. I was of the persuasion that customising meant physically modifying the elements in some way (ie: slice dice hack slash slosh stick and print!) But I've noticed that customising also seems to include using 3rd party elements on "normal unmixed" minifigs - the brilliant brickwarriors stuff for example springs to mind. But also I've seen pure lego creations which seem to have been called customised due to the fact that different torsos have been mixy-mixy'd (as my son used to say) with different legs / arms / heads etc... I know that I don't have the talent to do customising of the first type - or at least will need to devote more hours than I have to spare at the moment to get anywhere near the level of quality of customs we see on the forums on a regular basis... But creatively speaking anyone can have great ideas (still waiting for them though!) and the second and third options are good enough for me - and often sometimes is it harder to get that great idea than it is to actually make it happen? (To those that are abundantly skilled in the first type of customs) I'm not trying to say one is better than the other but I am wondering if there's a community consensus on what actually constitutes a custom or not? (be it minifig or model or whatever) Much love D

Calling all LEGO Army Builders... (BATTLE TRAYS)
nine09nueve replied to nine09nueve's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Yeah I can see that... plus you could have 2 Rows of 5 (or more) if you're connecting the outermost cmf plates vertically (rather than horizontally). This is great - exactly the kind of conversation I wanted to start here! Thank you MAB. I did look at the CMF bases to start with, the thought being I could use them instead of the 2x3 plates but in the end it just made the whole battle tray a bit too big and made it harder to keep the versatility with regards to (re)moving the central section and using it for cavalry... I do use the CMF bases for heroes/special characters - there are bigger so IMHO great for any minifig that has a larger sphere of influence/reach/melee range (insert attribute here as necessary) Much love D -

Calling all LEGO Army Builders... (BATTLE TRAYS)
nine09nueve replied to nine09nueve's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Yup - absolutely... And having the minifigures indivdually based also helps support them indivdually (see below) especially if they've got serious weapons/shields that make them hard to balance them when standing them up on their own little minifig legs! Yes - although I'd concede that if you were only fighting with only a few minifigs then the 10 sized Battle tray (10BT) would probably be too cumbersome tactics wise... perhaps having 3x5BT or perhaps 4x4BT would be better for small squads; Yup (3 for 3 now... this is good!) If you were using a 10BT and say only 2-3 minifigures needed to be removed (depending on your ruleset) then you remove them and push 7-8 minfigs around in the tray. If you lost 7-8 from the 10BT then you remove the 2-3 surviving minifigs from the tray and leave them on the battlefield. Next, picking up the battle tray itself the remaining minifigs drop into the space (arms keep them from falling through) and you can just tip them into your used/injured/resting/sleeping minifig box. Then the 10BT can be stacked for storage or recycled or whatever... What I particularly like is its versatility... the link should show the same tray being used for infantry, wargs and horses. And it is this that really sets it apart IMHO. If you have a 200-250 mini army - with different sized squads that included cavalry of any kind then I can't see the BT's from being anything other than a winner. Just imagine moving 200 individual minifigs on 2x3 bases EACH TURN! -
Having regularly wondered on how to shift lego armies around a battlefield, may I offer a possible solution to the LEGO tabletop battle playing community. I seriously doubt that it is the final word on the matter, but perhaps it can help start a conversation? Kind comments and helpful suggests would be gratefully appreciated! Much Love D *edit: There was a technical error in the first video - apologies*

Even at £8.75 I can't really believe that people think this is a viable army builder set... I think olive green is a 'tricky' colour match for elves - nice as an occasional accent but less as a whole army... Plus cost wise - you'll have to be shifting both the other minifigs in order to get the price down to £1-2 per elf which is where you may want to start with if you're looking at a significant force (rather than only a squad of 5 or 10 say) And even then the hair isn't generic enough IMO... Good for a leader / champion / general? Yes... Army builder? Not so much for me

Dear Stephen Now, I couldn't agree with you more! I have seen too many 10000 minifig "armies" on youtube with the same clone trooper or droid over and over - no weapons mind you - and all on the biggest baseplates possible... Not. An. Army. And whilst the display is (relatively) impressive as it still needs to be purchase and assumed etc ultimately anyone can pump enough money into the challenge of making a larger collection of minifigs. (I hope you noticed that I didn't mention any of your pictures in any of my examples - I am aware of your Historical work, you have significant numbers of differing troop types AND particularly liked some of the gold Drow weapon customs... Although I think there are better options for the skin tone) For me it isn't just the numbers (as an army will have different types of troops) and it isn't just the troop specialisation (as an army isn't just 5 squads of 5-7 specialised troop types... It needs SOME size after all) but also is it well thought out? Does it have enough troop/racial distinctions from another faction (rather than just a different colour scheme) does it have internal consistency? Does it look good? And also can you imagine it fighting a battle? All these things need to be chucked in the mix... Jackdaw's Napoleon's big army ( http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=98232 ) is a beautiful case in point of a wonderful army that ticks all my boxes - yes there are a lot of the same types of soldier but it is a realistic army of that period and so won't have the potential range of weapon variation that you could show in a fantasy/medieval army - and the whole lot is quite frankly the standard army builders should aspire to in my opinion! Much love D P.s: and don't even get me started on the feasibility of actually being able to use said 10000 strong armies in an actual "battle"!

Dear Slengr I'm sorry but I disagree... (Perhaps not wholeheartedly but I do still disagree!) Whilst I think there is a financial element involved in army building the incredibly detailed and beautiful MOC's that are regularly showcased on this site aren't free to build either. I have no doubt that the really big ones must run in to the hundreds of (insert local currency here) and maybe some must cost four figures... Particularly if you include lots of rare elements... All those shipping fees from Bricklink add up after a while. I do agree that once a MOC is "finished" then no more need be spent on it and you can always add another squad of 10 troops to an army but here's the thing... I think there is a BIG difference between an army and a collection - a distinction that I don't know if people share. Plus... If you think that an army has no input from the individual and is just TLG's creativity... Then dude... With the greatest respect... You're doing it wrong! Much love D
