Duplicates in LDD database
Calabar replied to Superkalle's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I think all the versions of a piece should be kept, even if the difference is aesthetic and not functional. If the aim is to "slim" the palette, perhaps different version of a piece could be grouped in a single element of the palette. -
Why not? ;) You can add a custom version of the T-Rex, then report it here. If not, I have to index the entry as incomplete. Your first contribution to this topic? Good work, thanks! Oops... Fixed! Thanks

So it seems Superkalle is not the first worrying about this the same issue! And it seems the final conclusions are pretty similar. I'd like to know if English language have a word with the same "nuance" of the Italian "appassionato" I mentioned before and I think can perfectly fit. According to wordreferences, it seems "enthusiast" could be that word, but I perceive a different meaning instead. Other translations of the term could be: "essere appassionato di" -> to be fond of, to be keen on, to go in for [sport, hobby]". -
Some useful MOC brick groups.
Calabar replied to Bricksandparts's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Oh, I noticed your creations and I appreciated the cheese slope puzzle overall: could be I will use it with transparent slopes to build a mosaic window in some medieval moc. My only doubt is about the "sturdiness" of the assembly: perhaps I need to use some transparent wall to contain it? -

As English is not my native language, I'm not the best person to judge the right use of a word. In Italian I would use the word "appassionato" (who have a "passion" for), that according to the dictionary you can translate as "fan". So "fan" seems a good word, according to my dictionary. But obviously the dictionary is not enough, so... what "English language" people say about? EDIT: oops, this should be post #2... I diverted my mind for a moment and many other posted before me! -
LEGO DesignbyME to close January 2012

I agree with vexorian. From TLG perspective, using LDD to create a database of alternate models has two great advantages: - it is a good marketing tool - is it a powerful mean to provide a "surplus value" for each lego set. Imagine if in the page of a lego set in the LEGO site you can explore a wide gallery of extra models, and then find a model you find lovely and convince you to buy the set. Or find a great amount of good models that open your mind over the potentialities of a set. Anyway my idea was to allow users to use the pieces of a single set (that means to expand the "filter bricks by set" mode to almost all new sets, although I'd like the database could be expanded to old sets too), and not to combine more sets. Perhaps combine a limited number of sets could be still useful for TLG, but I think is would be difficult to manage for the goal I explained before. Obviously the best case scenario for us will be to manage a database of pieces and import/export custom lists, but likewise, I think it will not be a useful thing for TLG. I think TLG has no such a need to sell lego sets through their site to do that using LDD. Children love to torment their parents in toy stores, while adult fans usually knows where to buy at a better price. Moreover if TLG wanted to make their website a massive distribution channel surely will not adopt the present policy with higher prices and even more higher shipping costs. About the codes to unlock LDD, I think it would be not a good idea. That's the reasons: - LDD has not so many users, so I think a limit such this will kill it. - The limit is not much useful, because soon will appear on the net pages with codes for the great part of the sets. So the limit will simply became something of uncomfortable, and unuseful for the supposed lego purpose (push LEGO customer to buy sets). - Last but not least, limits and locks like this are not a good promotional mean. The risk is that LDD users could be feel a bit frustrated if the feel theirself forced to buy all physical sets they like to experiment with LDD. -

Calabar replied to Brickdoctor's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
An idea (I don't know if already exposed) could be to improve the "Filter Bricks by Boxes" function adding new sets, especially the creator ones. The goal would be to create many alternative models for these sets. For example recently I bought the set 5867 (Super Speedster), a creator set with three main models. Moreover there was available the instructions of a forth model via Lego Club. And, finally, I found a MOCer that created other nine extra model (all very good, imho!). Imagine now to use LDD to create alternative models of official LEGO Sets, than share that and insert the models in the LEGO site in a classification where users can assign a vote to each model. Then you could access to these alternate models both from a global classification, then directly through the set's page. I think this will increase the appeal of a set. I have to admit that reason I bought the set 5867 was hevily influenced by the chance to build the extra models. -

You anticipate me! I thought the same thing. LDD is an interesting project and, as TLG have lost interest in it, its releasing as open source could even improve the project, adding features that TLG would have never implement in a software linked to their interests. -

With a higher resolution image it would be easy to realize a little animated gif with the infinite loop. Another thing that would help is the inclusion of the whole hand of the bigger minifig in the image. The only problem is that there is much difference in size between the two minifigs, so that it is necessary to zoom a lot (probably I would have opted for a bigger "toy" minifig). But if the image is enough big, it is not a problem. -
I love the Lime House, so that some time ago I built a version on my own. I'm very curious about your work in building interiors and modules, so I can compare it with my version. Did you based your built on the single photo that was available here?

LDD 5, what features do YOU want?
Calabar replied to BasOne's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I think it is possible, if you have an enough powerful computer. In the meanwhile, you can disable all advanced graphic features. PS: Your graphic drivers are up to date? -
Having issues with the LDD program
Calabar replied to ACWWgal2011's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Hi and welcome in the LDD forum. I'm not sure I've understood your problem. Your works made with LDD are saved in external files (.lxf files), and not "inside" the software. So the only thing you have to take care, is to don't delete your lxf files. If you fear to loose compatibility with your "old" files, that depends on the version of LDD you are using. LDD2 and LDD3 are compatible, while LDD1 used a different file format. Upgrading, it could be possible to loose some bricks (very few really), or see some bricks removed from the scene because of the stricter rules about legal and illegal connections. -
[Software] SR 3D Builder Lego simulator
Calabar replied to xSergio74's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Great work Sergio, as usual. Is there a comparison chart between the free version against the unlocked one? I hoped this time a portable and "ready to use" version would be available... will be next time? I noticed in the manual section the links returns an error 404. Manuals are not available still or is there an error in the urls?- 428 replies

LDD cannot connect to internet
Calabar replied to little_ghost's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
My experience is that many firewalls are not really disabled when you disable that. If it is not a problem, try to uninstall it temporarily. Check your proxy settings and hosts file too. Your LDD is up to date, right? -
Your hydrogen peroxide is weaker than mine with 3,6% and 12 volumes. The author of the post used a 30% solution (about 10 times more than your).
-
@Yatkuu Could you provide some extra info? How many hours did you leave the solution to act? It was a sunny day? Can you quantify the hydrogen peroxide you used for 2 teaspoons? It seems the hydrogen peroxide is a bit weak... perhaps you need a 10-15% solution at least (your solution is about 3%, isn't it?) to obtain "miraculous" results.

Did you measure the real size of the cube?

LDD 5, what features do YOU want?
Calabar replied to BasOne's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
But... it is a startup screen, so I think it should be full loaded before you can start using LDD. The problem is that the loading time depends on the models the screen have to load, and that is not good because big lxf files could need much time to be loaded. Using png preview images stored in lxf files could solve the problem, but the software would loose a bit of its "coolness". Perhaps a good approach would be to use the png image and try to load the lxf file only if the user try to move the png image as if it would be a 3D model (but... the delay would be acceptable?). An option to allow user to choose if use 3d models or images at startup would be another useful solution.
