LEGO Star Wars 2012 Pictures and Rumors

Recommended Posts

Leg prints and rear torso prints are surely here to stay.

I think I heard at my last visit to the factory that printing legs and both sides of torsos isn't as expensive as it used to be.

They (TLG) have invested in new printing machines and thus it only gets "better" from now on.

Not sure about the overly detailed figs coming in 2012 though - as someone mentioned, it's getting too "action fig like" for it to be LEGO as we romantically memorize it from our childhood.

Yeah and we always will, but lego is actually one of the few toys I think that the quality and detail has improved since my childhood. Action figures now break far more easily than my Thundercats/He man/real ghostbusters etc did, toy cars were bullet proof(maybe an exaggeration) but toys have to move on and I'd take most of the new minifigures over the ones from my childhood, I wish the sets were better designed in some cases.

Back on topic I take it that there was no sighting of Palpatines arrest in the latter days of the show? Fantastic to be getting the palace and skiff set this year but surprising to since it's 30 year anniversary of RoTJ next year. They made a big deal of Empire couple of years ago, I hope these sets are the tip of the iceberg for episode 6 sets :classic:

Exactly. In LEGO form, the thing's head is as big as its body... Given that in the movie the body is bulky and the head seemingly small, the proportion should be smaller in the head area. Not that it's to say they didn't do a lovely job of capturing the detail.

I'm not sure proportions are something really worth discussing in Lego, and especially Star Wars. Just bought Anakins Jedi star fighter and realised how our of proportion the ship is with Anakin and R2. (Massively too big).

I can't believe people are still complaining about the new design of the Gamorrean Guard and comparing it to the old version. TLG probably spent hours working not only on the fantastic sculpting of the head but also the paint detail on both the head and its shoulder pieces, and all some people here can do is compare it to the version that's nearly 10 years old and say it's not 'piggish' enough.

A kid having this figure and watching either RoTJ or Clone Wars will be very happy with a brilliantly detailed figure that looks pretty much like it does on the screen. I for one am very happy for these new detailed figures (except the new Clones Padme) and wish we had these from when I was a kid.

I feel at times that TLG can't win and I'm surprised that more detail in figures is something people are unhappy with.

OK my rant is over......

Because TLG spend hours working on a different design doesn't make it better. Time has nothing to do with better. Also a more detailed minifigure doesn't necessarily make it better if the details are just wrong. I don't want to debate about which one is better but you're statement is wrong.

Of course there is always ways for improvement, but still the new fig does look a lot better! In my opinion only the most conservative people (or people afraid of changes) would say the older one is better. I do agree that the older versions head looks a bit better, but only to make the whole figure look chubbier and not so tall! Else the new head looks perfectly accurate and all the detail is also nice. Besides I never understood these older LEGO molds. Why didn't they make separate mold for armor - stomach - something like castle armor mold and a separate head? In this case at least we could have brown armor and a green head. But no, they made it one piece and then decided to change the arms and hands into brown, so the fig wouldn't look like a green statue. That in my opinion makes it look ridiculously awful! The older Watto had similar problem …

How is my statement wrong.? You'll notice that I didn't in any way allude to time = better, just that I'm surprised at the level of critism that's been put against the Gamorrean for what could be a pretty difficult figure to capture and may have taken a fair amount of time in design.

well, it's his opinion, more than a statement, so it can hardly be "wrong"...

I oscillate between getting excited by new, more detailed figs, and a hankering back to the early days of my collecting the SW Lego, when a yellow smiley face and a fair hairpiece was enough to denote Luke - it doesn't LOOK much like errr Luke, but given a little imagination, everyone's happy...

As well as the "moving towards action figures" worry, there's also the fact that, apart from a few, specialised figs, the basic figure is more or less the same, so that given an exquisitely detailed and painted head for a GG, one instinctively expects everything else, including the proportions to be equally as close to the original, which up till now perhaps, hadn't been so uppermost in our minds - after all, if you look at solscudd's recent pics in the photography thread, with the celebration figs all together - Chewie should really tower above everyone else, but is the same size because of the minifig limitations, and no-one has been too unhappy about that...

Anyway, just my tuppence worth, as with every new wave of sets, there are many I want avidly, and a few I fell a bit "meh" about, but sadly for my bank balance (and space in a tiny flat to put them all) I'll probably end up getting most of them, otherwise risking falling even further behind in my failing attempt to get all, or at least most of the SW minifigs...

The Angry one's statement isn't wrong at all!

TLG put in a lot of effort because their market research supports the idea that the current trend is for better detail especially in licensed sets.

My opinion is that the new figures are massively superior to the old Gamorrean guard and defiantely for Jabba. If TLG does not respond to market trends then megabloks or some other company will and if sales are effected negatively then we will all suffer.

Back to topic though (Thanks for your comments Vindice/Helicaon), I hope so too. It's a good sign that we're getting two decent Jabba related sets this year and really hope they expand for a Rancor pit next year. I'd be surprised if we saw any Endor related stuff seeing the battlepack this year and also the Bunker set from recent times, although TLG could surprise us with an Ewok village. Home One has also been done so hopefully they will stay in Jabba's Palace for a little while longer.!

I too though am looking forward to Palpatine's Arrest.

Is this the UCS Artoo? I don't know enough about the existing Star Wars sculptures to know if it's a new model:

I know, I misread it as a statement instead of an opinion. An opinion can't be wrong.

Nice to see the r2-d2 at last, although I feel slightly disappointed, but no idea why. Hopefully some better pics will surface soon

From what I can see, that seems like a pretty good sculpture. The style seems a lot like that of LEGOLAND models and the models built for events. I think I almost hope they did the greebling with basic bricks, too, to make it fit in.
