What kind of cellular phone do you have?

Recommended Posts

I have heard that before about the iPod and I really don't understand it. I think Americans are more likely to pick a brand name and turn it in to an action or a generic product. For example, I have heard "hoovering" used to be commonly said. Do you agree?

I am American and I totally agree. We're annoying. I have never heard the word hoovering, however.

I had a Nokia 6230 until February and then I extended my contract and got a Sony Ericsson K800i for only 60

Really? I thought it was commonly used expression to mean "vacumming". Let a guy live in a country for three months and he thinks he knows it all! :-$ Just shows what I know. :-P

The linguistics has completely evolved due to this; it's no longer "Do you have an mp3 player?" but "do you have and iPod". 8-|

Well this happens with many dominant brands, when was the last time you asked for a "kleenex" or "coke" when you meant a more generic product... The worst example is people saying "lego" when they mean a plastic brick based construction toy X-D !

Personally I'm not into the ipod craze, but I smile at it. Mac has made superior computers, and especially operating systems, for years and still been bullied into a tiny market share by an inferior product... It's about time they have a product which Microsoft loathes and is the staple of its genre...

God Bless,

Nathan (biased ;-) )

Yep, that's why they failed to write a home grown OS that had the same multi-tasking and memory handling as even Windows 95 and eventually cheated by basing the OS on BSD rather than writing their own. This now is proclaimed as a feature, even though they spent millions and seven years working without success. Superior, yeah right. The biggest reason why Apple has such a small market share now is because of their constant overpricing because they are so convinced of their superiorty and they inability to produce a decent successor to System 7 in a timely fashion.

(Yep, I am biased too! :-D )

it's also replaced my watch as I just check the time on the screen when I need to know,

The more I say, the further out the window my point goes. But I too use the clock on my phone sometimes. For example, I'll use my watch at school/college, but my phone in town. But I don't really count clocks as an extra as all phones have them.

And If I buy it and use it, blatantly flashing it off to all my friends, I'll be cool too!!!!"'!!'1!!111"

... And it'll get stolen!

The linguistics has completely evolved due to this; it's no longer "Do you have an mp3 player?" but "do you have and iPod". 8-|

I have neither...

Really? I thought it was commonly used expression to mean "vacumming".

It is, but perhaps it's not universal.

That's re-assuring. Norro reminded me of the other common one; kleenex. I never hear either in Australia though.

I'm a computer novice so I won't argue the point... too much... X-D. But it is a little rich for a windows supporter to accuse anyone of copying (or creating a 'timely' successor). Leaving aside the origins of windows ;-) they spent the last 5 (5!) years renaming OSX 'vista' and still managed to degrade it.

For me it is more about reliability. In nine years of Mac they've crashed on me three times. Nothing was lost. I've encountered hundreds of viruses and they've never been able to do a thing.

And I'm sure ;-) I'm misunderstanding the world, but I've never been able to run multiple applications on a PC as fast as I can on a Mac...

God Bless,

Nathan

Yeah, in the UK "hoovering" is very commonly used in place of vaccuming. Has been since the '80s I think. I also think the iPod/MP3 player thing is creeping up on us too, as many people think all MP3 players are iPods.

My opinion on the iPhone is a bit weird. I don't like the design, and I much prefer the pure aluminium designs they've put out in the past. In addition, it lacks certain features than I class as essential such as MMS. It has a pretty low spec camera, and it's not capable of video recording.

On the flip side, I love the interface. Everything is so well laid out and intuitive, unlike many other phones out there. The multi-touch display is awesome in my opinion, with so much potential.

Brainbox: True, I guess it's not really a feature, but I was using it as yet another example in my post to show how phones can be useful and/or take over your life. :-D

Sinner: Sure, Apple may have struggled in the past creating an operating system, but they're there now, and now they have got an operating system. It doesn't matter how they got there, the end product is one of the best operating systems out there.

As for their hardware, it's simply not true that they're over priced. Since they moved to Intel chips there have been many comparisons made between Apple and other PC manufacturers, princing out like for like comparisons. In general they've found out either: 1) that Apple are only slightly more expensive, in the range of $50-100 more, 2) cost nearly the exact same, or 3) that the other manufacturer is more expensive! (Dell in this case). If you want I'll search out the links for these articles when I have time.

Well I was going to write a big post further debating the point, but I think in the interest of communal harmony, I won’t. There have been enough heated discussions on EB in the last few days and I don't want to join the club, and the chamber doesn’t seem like a nice place to hang. I would like to just point out that my point on Apple being overpriced was in the context of why they have a small market share today, so I was referring to their prices in the past. What they charge today is irrelevant.

I am not going to debate it further here as I am here as I love Lego and Eurobicks and I don't want to cause trouble over an irrelevant topic. I will take this one on the chin and attempt to bow out gracefully. Feel free to take any potshots at my rapidly retreating posterior. I apologise for any potential causing of tensions when I unintendedly caused this debate. As a person who writes programs for Windows for a living (and learnt to program on an Apple II) I have strong feelings on this, and I should learn to keep my big mouth shut. :-$

Sorry.

Absolutely, I wasn't taking potshots, and I didn't think the debate was that heated. However I agree with you, a post with the title "What kind of cellular phone do you have?" doesn't really ask for a Mac vs. PC discussion.

I've been reading so much over the past few days on sites such as Digg, Engadget and Gizmodo, who have taken to covering every aspect of the iPhone, from people queueing outside stores to how the text-messaging works. Constant posts by fanboys from one camp or the other, such as "iPhone sucks" or "Windows sucks" really grate on me, just like they do in Mac vs. PC debates. I just couldn't resist stepping in to discuss it with someone who can write more than two derogatory words on the subject. :-D

I use both a Mac and a PC. I'm a developer too, both application and web. I use both, with no real preference for one or the other. And I love both. :-)

Just to cover myself as sometimes typed words don't:

I consider Mac/pc a banter topic (I'm Irish... almost everything is a banter topic, I'm still looking for the exceptions X-D ) so am not really seriously debating. With your knowledge of computers and my lack of, we really couldn't.... ;-)

So no need at all to apologize/think you've caused heated debate! This is the main reason I love EB, off topic is fair gain. If you lived nearby I'd seriously invite you out for a drink on the subject ;-) and hopefully learn from your knowledge...

Again there is nothing wrong with you upholding the virtues of Microsoft (besides the implied oxymoron... there I go again X-D X-D )

God Bless!!

Nathan

I've never heard that term used here. However, durring the great depression of the 1930's, many blamed President Herbert Hoover for various hardships. Groups of hobo shanties became "Hoovervilles", newspapers became "Hooverblankets" and an empty pocket turned inside-out would produce a "Hooverflag".

:-P BTW

Really? I thought it was commonly used expression to mean "vacumming". Let a guy live in a country for three months and he thinks he knows it all! :-$ Just shows what I know. :-P

The vacuum is an fun one to spell, having two 'U's.... ;-)

Of course! But things like Coke and Kleenex are valuable things we use for normal basic life, things that we decide are better based on good reasoning. Because clearly, Coke is the superior product. X-D People like the iPod just because it is widely excepted as something to make someone look 'cool' and be excepted into one's little clicks and groups and what have you.....it's all nonsense, really. And in the end, you've wasted your time, effort and money on trying to get these ignorant others to like you by acting exactly like them.

People have replaced Photocopier for Xerox and Petroleum Jelly with Vaseline for intelligent reasons, not to seem cool to other idiots who use it and to walk down the street deliberately showing off. :-P I understand that's how fashion works, however. :-X

Mac has made superior computers, and especially operating systems, for years and still been bullied into a tiny market share by an inferior product... It's about time they have a product which Microsoft loathes and is the staple of its genre...

INFIDEL! Prepare to be crushed!

To Norro and Mr Hobbles

Thanks. My main problem with the old Mac vs PC debate is I have never seen any one "win". The fanboys both say their line, neither agree, everyone is left with elevated tensions and no one is happy. (Except perhaps the trolls.) I think I will sit this one out. :-)

But it is a great word...

I'm sorry Brainbox but I'm going to have to ask you to return to the topic... You didn't reference ipods, brand names, or Macs/pcs in this post... ;-) X-D X-D

It is. I really don't no anything about the technology, but I don't need to (nor do I want to). Every single product line of the iPod is wayyyy overrated, so naturally the iPhone follows the trend for no actual intelligent reason. |-/ It's just "The iPod's COOL so the iPhone must be COOL too!!!!1 And If I buy it and use it, blatantly flashing it off to all my friends, I'll be cool too!!!!"'!!'1!!111"

:-P

There's nothing special about the Ipod. However, Apple's marketing strategies are great and America buys.

Look at all those commercials for the iPhone. I'm not saying I like the iPhone but the ads were very well put together. The ads for iPods are very good also.

Slightly embarassingly?

Nokia 3510i

That said though, I've had it three and a half years and it still works. So I must be doing something right.

I used to have one too. I liked it a lot, and a girl who is my co-worker still has that model.

Right now I have a Sony Ericsson C702:

c_big1565344.jpg

Generally I don't pay that much attention to mobile phones, I have one because it makes life easier, but I usually receive calls rahter than make them. And I hardly ever use any of the advanced functions. I play games sometimes and that's about it. I'm nowhere close to the level of mobile-phone addiction I notice at some of my friends.

In the last 10 years I've had loads of nokia's, because they're so realiable. But now I've got a HTC desire, it's great, especially for scanning minifig barcodes.

I'm surprised to see this topic bumped, but at least you two guys have good taste; I have a HTC Desire too!

Even so; Dreamweb, please don't quote things from three years ago...

I've got a Samsung Solstice;

Pretty good phone, but the texting keyboard can be annoying, as it has small buttons and I have big fingers.
