I'm trying to build an old steam ship as a model, first in LDD to see if its plausible and to estimate the required parts. But I've run in to a tight spot. the engines (2) where triple expansion steam. 3 cylinders. 2,5m long 2m high scaling to 1:40 via http://studs.sariel.pl/ gives me approximately 8 studs long. Only I'm stuck at 10 (11), which wouldn't be a problem you'd think, but the engine room where they are going into is small and there is other equipment to place as well (or I'd like too) So if there is anyone who has an idea how to downsize what I've got length wise. without losing the ability of the pistons going up and down when the crank rotates. best regards, Bart -
This slimmed down 6 wide Birney Safety Trolley was first built in 2011 and based on the work of Brickshelf user J-2 and his vintage 2003 model of the Mister Rodgers' Neighborhood. (link to it here: http://www.brickshel...ery.cgi?f=37552 ) I have modified that users' model to have enclosed sides and now have reduced the width from 8 studs to 6, plus I added real seats, trolley poles, and magnets for pulling freight or a second streetcar. These magnets are at the correct height for use with official sets and most, if not all, of my MOCs. This car is numbered 37, and I have another one numbered 32 that isn't finished yet. (I only ordered four black macaroni bricks when I should have ordered eight, thus delaying completion of the other streetcar.) This is the former state of the real cars, which have since been destroyed to make the newer version seen above. This is the fictional electric line that runs the streetcars on my town. It is also called the IG&WER for short, as Ironwood Glencoe & Western Electric Railway is a bit of a mouth full... Everyone remembers the 9V Train's sub-theme "My Own Train"... or if you don't and are wondering what I'm talking about look here on Bricklink for a list of all the sets in that theme: http://www.bricklink...ing=124.315.694 The passenger aspect of this sub-theme is covered by this set, #10015: Passenger Wagon. (seen in this stock Bricklink photo below) Also, I might suggest you look at -R8-'s 2011 Reviewer's Academy review of the set here on Eurobricks: http://www.eurobrick...showtopic=59018 Everyone loves a classic, and the set deserves the affection if gets. However, it really lacks variety if you have a whole train of these running around. I asked myself these questions: Where does the baggage / mail go? Where are the end tail lights? Why am I talking to myself? Thus, I built my own version, which I plan on getting in real life soon (if not next): I went ahead and added inter-car walkways, giving it less a 1870's feel and more a 1910's look, plus two sliding doors for the combination baggage / passenger car. A small rear platform for the observation car was added, as were 1/2 stud recessed doors for platform access. These coaches are also build-able in tan, dark purple, reddish brown, white, black, and red. They are to be pulled by engine #4613 around my layout: (EDIT: 7/22/14: Updated the photo of the engine to a more recent screenshot... now I just need to take a real life photo!) What do you think?
