    Bionicle 2016 Sets Discussion

I'm wondering, does LEGO take into account a year's reception before doing the next year's? I was under the impression they planned sets years in advance, so the designs for 2017 would have been finalised by now. Of course, I don't really know how LEGO works.

My personal opinion is that the popularity of the Star Wars figs can only strengthen the CCBS system. A lot of people, including previous sceptics of the buildable system, have cautiously given the Star Wars figs a try. If they decide they want more, the popularity might spill over into Bionicle too. I guess this means Bionicle might play second place, but I don't think that means it'll die. If anything the overall market for CCBS might expand and that's a terrific thing in my books. Do we know this for sure? I don't know, I've always felt that the size and complexity of the CCBS parts is offset by the lower piece count per set. I do think, though, that constraction figures generally offer better value for money.

Really? I've always put the furry side on the inside, so I've been doing it wrong since Hero Factory ...

I think for me is that even if it can and has been studied, there is still a great deal of subjectivity in art. In art history we can see how the various movements in history challenge the notion of what is really considered as good art. I mean, a neoclassical architect would disagree vehemently with a postmodernist architect, wouldn't they? We study art to understand what is considered good by the academia of our time, and as artists we then choose to experiment and pick and choose from what our professors taught us and maybe even start a counter movement. I believe there are standards in art, but it is also possible to find a break in those standards to be attractive, so you are right in that art theory has to be first properly understood to be broken. I just don't think any design can be totally devoid of any fans, and I think people just find it contentious when their personal preference is not only disregarded as personal taste, but be considered to be factually wrong. At least, I think that would be my contention.

Thank you for that. Personally, based on the pics, I like Terak better, but I guess I'll need to see the combinations in hand. Also thanks for all the combination photos with Umarak. It's been hard to get shots of them, especially for some creatures like Akida.

Thanks for your review, Dorek. If you had to rank the combinations of Umarak and the creatures, how would you do it? I know you said Uxar and Ikir are the best, but what about the others?

I picked up Kylo Ren, and I have to say, wow, I am very, very impressed with his construction! I love the new torso, and the new piece that wraps around the gearbox. The end result is a figure that has the gear functionality, but all nicely tucked away in a compact and enclosed torso. He looks spectacular. I can't wait to find Rey and Finn now.
  8. Oh sweet! The Netflix series looks awesome! The style seems to be a type of cel-shading, and in fact reminds me of the YouTube series RWBY, but more intricate. It looks perfect, and I never imagined it could be so good. And February! That's not too far off! :D

Just to let Australian fans know, the 2016 figures are making their way to shelves. I spotted 75118 Kylo Ren and 75119 Captain Phasma at a Myer. I didn't check Phasma's price, but Kylo is $40, so Obi-Wan's pricepoint. Also note that until the 24th, Myer has 20% of all toys, including LEGO, so it might be worth keeping an eye out if you go shopping tomorrow. I picked up the only Kylo Ren on the shelf. Gonna wait until Christmas to open it though (it's a gift), but I'm pumped.

    MOC: Goruk, Master of Titanium

I love the proportions and the stocky look. I thought the use of Hordika necks for fingers is brilliant and gives it great shape.

I love your photos. This and the Lewa review really do a good job of showcasing these figures, and they look so cool in them.

REVIEW: 71307 Gali Uniter of Water

Gali didn't look that appealing in the promotional shots but she's mostly fine here. I definitely think the mask looks better than in promotional shots. Not a revolutionary figure by any means, but a decent figure overall. I wholeheartedly agree. In general, the Toa of the 2016 wave have fairly realistic proportions, and resemble the average human body. However, this does mean that they are less heroic-looking than the 2015 ones, because heroic proportions are very exaggerated. Tahu 2015, for example, looks heroic because his arms are both larger and longer in comparison to a real human, and his legs are long. Longer and larger limbs usually serve to make a more heroic design, especially in robotic designs (look at the Transformers, for example). Of course, when designing heroic cartoon characters, exaggerated proportions are better. But the Gali 2016 here is not bad, just ... too close to human and thus bland.

Here's another link: http://biosector01.c...:71305_by_Dorek And wow, Lewa looks terrific. An evolution of the 2015 design, and generally better executed. I didn't expect to like it as much as I do, but I do!
  14. I feel a bit crushed that the Inside Out rumours were fake. I just rewatched the movie last night, and I would simply adore a whole set of them. Aside from CMF I don't think we'll ever get the chance to see them.

I confess I prefer the 2016 Kopaka over the 2015 one. Kopaka was actually one of my least favourite Toa (although I still like him) in the 2015 line, and personally I feel that the more streamlined look in the 2016 one is more appealing.

Finn looks a ton better here than in the Club Magazine picture. In that one he was very awkwardly posed and here he looks like a very good adaptation. A better-looking figure than Luke, in my opinion.

    The Strider

Oh wow, that is very cool. Half-life? The model itself is already very impressive. But the backdrop you put it in, that's genius. Terrific work.

I have to say, from this angle, Umarak's legs look much better. I can sincerely say I have no problems with them at all now.

Actually I would not mind a Jar Jar. I could use the head for a really fun Gungan character.
  20. I think it's intriguing and a G1 connection would open up a lot of story possibilities. However, in my opinion, I think someone on the art team mistook Mata Nui for Okoto. I know I didn't notice that was Mata Nui until someone pointed it out.

I actually kind of feel the same! I mean, I didn't dislike her initially, but had no strong feelings. But she's starting to look rather promising.

You know, I thought that the torso was the Star Wars torso, but on closer look it looks like a new piece! It's thinner at the waist and the "neckline" is a different shape.

Bitterness can be an extremely powerful motivator. If executed properly, it can make for very strong characterisation.

Loving that concept art! Skull Basher had more of an "ice age" kind of look, initially. I enjoy all these insights LEGO gives us about the behind-the-scenes work. It really adds to the appreciation for the line. Kudos to the designers!

I absolutely agree! The Okoto saga is defined just well enough, but it's not too detailed to the point that kids cannot set their own stories. Even when creating MOCs, I appreciated being able to just pop my characters with their backstories onto Okoto. I think giving kids the chance to create their own headcanons is fantastic.
