Star Wars Rebels

This is my fundamental problem with the show. They NEEDLESSLY makes the Empire lose. It's like everytime an Arquietens gets blown up from a single salvo from a fighter. That's not necessary. Just show the ship being disabled and save budget from animating an explosion.

The reason this sort've thing upsets me is as a writer, i'm in uni so i'm not professional, it frustrates me to no end to see this kind of lazy resolution. I should'nt feel as a viewer I could write something better.

I do actually love a lot about the show, I loved this episode til the Gozanti exploded, but its moments like that which reveal the show's underlying weakness, something we have thankfully seen less of due to Thrawn.

Well, that ship needed to explode or the entire Rebel Alliance would be as good as dead.

I can't stand AP-5's voice, and not just the monotone. But it was really funny at the end.

Wedge is as dense as fog.

LOL  @Captain Nemo I'm not the only one who hears Alan Rickman!!!!  Makes me really sad that he's gone..

But AP-5 singing was literally the weirdest but best thing I've seen in a while. Did I like it better than Max Rebo though... Something to ponder

You know what, something in Twin Suns should've bothered the heck out of me but the interaction is handled so well i'm okay with it. In fact I have to say i'm entirely happy with how the writing team handled this episode, really well done. If anything this episode states something i've been hoping it would for a very long time about its relationship with the OT and certain characters.

Not disappointed at all. I won't say much more until tomorrow night when most people will have seen it but I really enjoyed this episode and it was the one I was least looking forward to this season.

Good episode all around, and it included some great visuals and classic Star Wars music.

On specific things:

Spoiler
  • Shortest fight ever! But worth every millisecond. There was incredible tension because while Maul's death was sealed from the start, it seemed by all indications that he wouldn't go easy...it worked for the episode that the fight was shockingly quick, flipping expectations. Plus it upped Kenobi's badass meter.
  • In that regard, I loved that Kenobi seemed to shift during their brief conversation. He was willing to play along, but once Maul started to piece together the purpose of his exile, he clearly went killer mode to end the thread to Luke immediately.
  • Ezra was used very well in this episode, and far more than I anticipated--but that was a good thing. It made sense that Maul would continue to use Ezra (like he always has) to lure out Kenobi.
  • I'm not sure how I feel about Ezra meeting Kenobi...but I do think that the writers were trying to shutter potential OT complaints about a missing Kenobi/Ezra team up by emphasizing Kenobi's own mission of protecting Luke. Kenobi knows Luke is the chosen one, which may explain his...er lack of interest, in a sense, of another potentially helpful Jedi. He's playing the long game and Luke is what will win the game, not Ezra.
  • In terms of story leaps, did Ezra just pull Tatoonine out of a hat? I don't remember him finding the actual twin sun planet before just casually mentioning it here...
  • Tuskin Raders cameo...although they have a habit of getting cut up... :look:
  • I loved how dirty the characters got from the sand. The animation was very good in this episode, although I'm sure the empty backgrounds helped.
  • Old Ben voice was spectacular--I believe he's voiced by the same actor as AP-5.
  • Chopper's extended decision to leave or follow was great, as was his clear cursing storm afterwords.
  • Zeb snores.

And now the last week of agonizing waiting begins!

I'm glad this arc is finally over, I was incredibly bored with Maul centric episodes. And now we are the finale? So what happenned in the third season?

- The arc with Dark Ezra was dropped in favor of a dry and boring Sabine side story.

- Thrawn has been completly set aside as a ''Let them Go'' figure, he's only scary if you are a factory operator on Lothal or a covert up agent. It seems like an incredible waste of a character and he will likely be made a fool of himself in the finale at this point.

- How many episodes were plot centric? The openning, Through Imperial Eyes, Mandalorian support and I imagine the finale. The sheer number of filler episodes, even though some of them were good, has been stagering.

I also wanted to get back at the episode with Mon Mothma and how crap the formation of the Rebel Alliance was handled. ''Hey guys, let's all conveniently join our forces right now! I hope you are all watching my transmition through hidden channels at the same time and having ships at the ready for hyper drive manoeuvers! I hope you trust me, I'm a senator and this couldn't in any way be a trap''

Of course I liked some of the episodes, The Antiles Extraction and Through Imperial Eyes were fantastic, Zeb, AP-5 and Chopper were the highlight of the group. ( Zeb was given a single episode, which he shared with both AP-5 and Chopper, poor guy ). It doesn't however excuse in my opinion how filler heavy the season was and how reliant on ''member this'' for people to continue watching the show.

At this point all I want is for Thrawn to be handled correctly in the last episode, but I know this won't happen, likely because mandalorians will show up at the last minute when Thrawn has them at their mercy, he will say '' Whaaaatttt? '', his ship will get blown up by a single proton torpedo launched from the Ghost and Hera will say something like ''don't mess with my droids'' with a smug face. He will then have to report to the emperor, admit his failure, gets send to the outer rim dealing with pirates and they will tease the next mustache twirling villain of season 4, probably an half Maul half Droid secret apprentice with a british accent.

I may have gone too far in a few places.

Twin Suns was alright, not really what I expected. I was disappointed by the quick fight and it's not really clear if Maul was cut or not. Now I can't wait for the finale.

Finale Trailer!

What a hugeeee build up to nothing

I really like how Obi Wan only drew his lightsaber to protect Luke :cry_happy: And then the fight was just trash, like I didn't even know that he hit Maul. But it was very nice to see that moment between Maul and Kenobi, very touching. But that last few seconds of the episode with Aunt Beru :cry2:

Good episode though, sad to see Maul come back and leave this way.

I quite enjoyed that episode, I always like it when they sneak in some Classic Star Wars music and the final scene was excellent! And a nice "teaser" you could say, for a New Hope.

There were a number of cool references, to The Phantom Menace in this episode, and its ironic to see Maul use the move he used to kill Qui Gonn fail him in this episode. I can understand why people may have been disappointed by the duel and maybe from a marketing standpoint they could have changed the teaser trailers slightly. Still, a good episode and its nice to see a fitting end to Maul.

Loved the episode.

As for the duration of the fight, it was perfect. I don't expect to see two older guys do saber-ballet before one of them gets the upper hand on the other. In some ways it was a sweet moment since Maul totally intended the "I-got-Qui-Gon-like-this-move and Obi Wan was like....I am not Qui-Gon. Heh heh.

I do hope and pray that Thrawn is handled well at the end but we all knew it was gonna lead to another tangent or something since the rebel fleet survives until the battle of Endor. So we already know Thrawn doesn't quite get it done.

(Spoilers, obviously. If you haven't seen the episode, you probably shouldn't be here.)

I've never liked the idea that Maul survived TPM. But after this episode, and looking back on this character from 1999 to now, I think I may be finally able to look past that, even though I don't like it, because let's face it, Maul has been a very interesting character since then. And what a fitting end. His last words were so powerful.

I was hoping for a longer fight, and was initially a little dissapointed with how short and sudden it all was. But now I've had time to think about it, and now I think that that was really the best way to go about it, and I am happy with it now. I love how Obi-Wan used Qui-Gon's stance, which caused Maul to try and kill him the way he killed his master. Obviously, Obi-Wan was prepared.

Obi-Wan's such a good guy. After he strikes the killing blow, he catches Maul as he falls, and closes his eyes for him when he died. I love the respect he gave to the evil monster that he just killed who took so much from him. This is why Obi-Wan is my favorite Jedi.

And that scene when you hear Beru call Luke's name and you see him running along... :')

"He will avenge us."

And, man, is next week's finale going to be intense.

Here is why im okay with the lightsaber fight. This is subjective and anecdotal.

I was part of a Go team once and we had the honor and privilege to play against a player from Japan who is a real master of the game. All of us, about five, played him at the same time and he swiftly crushed each of us with only our teacher holding out a little longer. When you are outclassed you are outclassed.

Not only that but the duel isnt simply about the blades, a lot of the skill involved with this kind of fighting in Star Wars comes down to one's connection to the force. Obi Wan clearly has found oneness, hence him knowing techniques that allow to become a force ghost, with the force whereas Maul has not. At heart Maul was a broken man with only his hatred for Kenobi keeping his already failed engines puttering forward. Of course the highly motivated Obi Wan who had to protect Luke, who was entirely in control of the duel from the begining managed to kill Maul in a few moves.

Zero Hour HYPE HYPE HYPE!!!

Hopefully they will handle Thrawn well. I like his battle armor. At least one main character MUST die or else I will be absolutely fed up with the show.

And I hope Thrawn doesn't die...

Thrawn will probably disappear out of the story like Darth Vader, and they will introduce another Imperial commander to replace him in the next season

As the countdown to Zero Hour commences, how would you rank your top five episodes of Star Wars: Rebels Season Three?

I'd rank my top five as follows:

5. The Holocrons of Fate/Visions and Voices

4. An Inside Man

3. Trials of the Darksaber

2. Through Imperial Eyes

1. Twin Suns

It won't even take that much - she'll reverse the polarity on an Imperial mouse droid which will set off a chain reaction that destroys Thrawn's entire fleet, giving the Emperor a fatal heart attack and shifting the force back into balance (Hera is the true chosen one after all).

I never wanted to see Maul come back but after 30 years of lusting for revenge after being fatally cut in half  he went out like a punk in a couple of seconds. They might as well have had him lunge at Obi Wan and miss only to fall into the waiting mouth of the Sarlac...where he could have at least spent the next 1000 years bitching and moaning to Boba.

Thrawn better win. Dodonna's line rings hollow to me "Let's finally show them what we're made of" when all the rebels do is win.

Top Five episodes? Hmm thats actually kind've hard. This is a show I always find a lot of scenes or moments in every episode to love even if I dislike the episode as a whole. A lot also hinges on next week's episode. As of now my top five list would be:

5. Hera's Heroes

4. Secret Cargo

3. The Antilles Extraction

2. Steps into Shadow

1. Through Imperial Eyes

Although any scene with Thrawn is essentially at my top all time favorite moments of this show and Clone Wars.

I'm not expecting Thrawn to be killed off or anything in this finale. I would have expected that possibility earlier in the season, but after the latest trailer glimpses of the finale and the flow of the main story, I don't see that happening. From all indications, it seems like the Rebel's planned attack on Lothal won't even occur, rather Thrawn will preemptively strike and wipe out most of the cell. In that regard, I don't think we'll loose any major Imperials, well except Kallus. :cry_sad:

I'm not sure how Sabine and the Mandalorians will factor in...frankly I'd rather we not see Sabine again this season as it's way too soon after her notable departure. Sure she'll show up in season 4, but I don't think it's necessary she return at the last minute here, as it only plays into the "Rebels win my miracle again" mindset.

---

On top five episodes:

5. Trials of the Darksaber

4. The Antilles Extraction

3. Twin Suns

2. An Inside Man

1. Through Imperial Eyes

Maul always felt unecessery, even his Clone Wars appearance was a long strech. This time though he's the character that takes most of the season's panel artwork and since they dropped ''Dark ezra'' he was a rather pointless character, except if you consider that the pay off was worth it, which I'm not certain.

Like everyone I really like Empire centric episodes:

5. The Last Battle

4. Hera's Heroes

3. Secret Cargo

2. Antilles Extraction

1. Through Imperial Eyes.

And yes from the trailers the attack on Lothal won't happen as Thrawn discover the base's location. It's assumed the base will be under siege and Ezra will contact the mandalorians to achieve whatever. Thrawn will most probably direct ground operations as we see him in his shuttle with an escort of Death Troopers, which I sincerely wish they get some love ( They get blown up by an unseen explosion before Baze finishes them off in Rogue One which was lame in my opinion. )

My final prediction is that the Rebels will get utterly wrecked in the space battle ( TIE defender love please ) and suffer some heavy losses on the ground assault before reaching some sort of status quo. Mandalorians will finally show up thanks to Ezra and cause enough chaos for some of the Rebels to escape. One main protagonists will die, most probably Zeb fighting Death Troopers, and the base will get destroyed.

I think Kallus will be used in season 4 if they play their cards right.

But I swear if Thrawn gets killed... there will be riots.

Yes! The episode is so dark when you think about it: in the opening a whole shipement crago and fighter escort gets blown up, meaning the resistance forces they would have helped died STARVING.

I also loved the Star wars: TIE Fighter vibes with the trainning pods, the orange elite stripes on the interceptors and how the instructor wrecked everyone's buisness.

Didn't really like that episode, the pacing was like a slow movie and then all of a sudden it ended. Maul goes from years of single-minded "must kill Kenobi" to "forget about that, you defeat the sith" in his dying breath. Ezra deserves an ultra-slap. Again. :hmpf: I actually prefer Ewan McGregor's Obi Wan to Sir Alec Guiness, and it was weird that they would use James Arnold Taylor for the Obi Wan holocron but Stephen Stanton for the man himself.

This bothers me: didn't even see Maul get cut. Sure, his lightsabre definitely got cut up, but it didn't really look like he got hit at all. And when being sliced in half in Episode I wasn't enough to kill him, but this was? Weird.

Some things like the animation and Chopper were good. And a full stop on the Maul story at last.

Why are you guys rounding up the episodes already? Have you watched the last episode? :look:

I like it when the story team put a lot of samurai movie influences in Star Wars. I personally like how the fight between Obi-Wan and Maul ended so quickly. Even today the story team carry forward the Akira Kurosawa inspiration that George Lucas creatively borrowed to make the original trilogy. Bravo!

Haha yeah I never connected the two til now but yes this is like a mission in Tie Fighter. Incredible game. It's also got tinges of the Rogue Squadron books which I highly recommend (for the initial four book quadrilogy, I never read further then that.) reading.
