Heroica RPG - Quest #129: Flying the Coop

Recommended Posts

The beggar frowned through his thick beard, waving away Torc's acidic breath with his free hand.

"All I know that you're wasting your time with this. You don't want to be here. Leave." The beggar's angered last word reverberated in the air slightly as he fixed the party with an almost challenging look.

Torc hissed yet again at the insinuated threat.

"Why don't we want to be here?"

I take the Cloak of the Red Assassin and put it on, taking off the Sticky Gloves as I do so. Thank you, Hybros. I take the two weapons and hide them in my layers of cloaks.

Ignoring the man, I go towards the blood, seeing if I can track down whoever it came from.

Mizuki stared down into the horizon as she walked near the rest of the party. While they were interrogating the beggar, Mizuki tossed her Lucky Die to Erik. "It'll help you through the quest.."

A Lucky Die, eh? I wasn't sure any more existed.

Hoke quickly stows his Flagpole and grabs his Gladiator Trident, the tips of the prongs gleaming wickedly.

"I won it in in a die game." The beggar worried Mizuki. His attitude was too confident, even though he was being surrounded by a group of armed heroes.

"Good idea, Dyric."

Hybros pokes Mizuki. "Hey, woman. Can I borrow that Kjorfalneire Tongue?"

Erik takes a few steps away from the beggar, and turns to the party. He slips Voltedge out of his belt to hand to Mizuki. "This might hit a bit harder than that fleuret, if we come up against something ethereal.

He then turns to Thalion. "Is it alright if I borrow some of your old magic equipment? The staves and some gems? I'll make sure you get them back."

"Odd how worked up the dragon's getting over that beggar." He mutters.

Guts fishes the coin out of the beggar's cup and returns it to his pockets.

"Alright mate. You know we're not going to move, we've figured out you're not a real beggar, now what."

"Yeah." Erik says, taking another look at the sword he'd become so used to seeing. "It's certainly been useful, and I think it killed a demon, but I have these other weapons now"

He stops abruptly when he hears Guts say the one-legged man isn't a real beggar.

"I dunno man, why would he fake it? He's probably just a bit tired. Or drunk. They must be somewhere else along the waterfront, or maybe the ship got impounded by the Bonapartes." He says, looking down the streets running along the water's edge as he tries to think of where else to go.

"Isn't it obvious? He's not very interested in our coin, as a beggar would be, or we would not be able to get him to stop talking. Also, have you seen this place? Terrible for begging, no shelter, not a lot of passersby. Also, he just happens to be where we are supposed to meet a ship that isn't there, that he seems to know more about. That screams lookout to me. Plus the blood, where our brown-clad friend here seems wholly unfazed by."

"Maybe he wants to get rid of us so he can help himself to the stuff in the boxes. If he burns the empty ones to stay warm, that'd explain the ash."

Erik eyes the dagger and the axe hanging from Guts' belt worriedly. "I'll slip off somewhere else if you're gonna... keep chatting with him." He says, touching the handle of his Peacekeeper's Totem as if to ward off evil and looking back at the beggar. "I'd love to leave you alone and get on with finding this boat, but I'm afraid it looks like my boss wants to make sure there's nothing else you know." He apologises, diplomatically, before walking away and taking the Lucky Die out of a pouch to look at.

He stops around a nearby corner, though, within earshot in case something happens.

Sorry I thought that might merge.

"Aye, perhaps that cloak hides the source of that blood," Mortimer mutters, unsure of himself.

Ignoring the man, I go towards the blood, seeing if I can track down whoever it came from.

Dyric looks at the dried blood smear with an assassin's eye. It fades as it hits the stonework, and he easily spots the bandage stuck to the side that Em found earlier. Clearly somebody tried to stem the flow, but failed. Curiously, he can spot sudden, sharp u-turn just as the blood begins to fade. It looks like whoever was bleeding returned - or was returned - to the pier, and possibly the Magpie. There's a sudden hiss at him from behind the crates...

"Good. Leave an old man in peace."

Torc hissed yet again at the insinuated threat.

"Why don't we want to be here?"

"Alright mate. You know we're not going to move, we've figured out you're not a real beggar, now what."

The beggar stared at Guts and Hoke trying to intimidate him, before chuckling in a suddenly gravelly tone in the back of his throat.

16308247533_56e09a3cf3_t.jpg

"I did warn you."

"Aye, perhaps that cloak hides the source of that blood," Mortimer mutters, unsure of himself.

16308247533_56e09a3cf3_t.jpg

"It hides more than that."

The old man's shadow cast across the ground suddenly slithers forward and coalesces around his stump of a leg, letting him push himself to his feet quite suddenly. Before the heroes can react, he swings his walking stick (which suddenly looks a lot like a wand) through the air. His cloak, hood, and the heroes are thrown backward as the air freezes, and is thrown into a small hailstorm. It's more than enough to alert Erik to return to the group. The relatively small number of people nearby all flee in terror, their screams riding on the thick frosty air that darkens the sun. A small army of undead crawls out of the water, a group of wights flying through the sky amongst flocks of villainous avians and shrieking as demon rays slither through the cold, blackened water. The old man's cloak and hood dissolve into nothing on the ground as a new one appears on his back, formed of shadow and darkness, same as his leg and his now-apparent, barely human arm that he bares threateningly.

16742074319_195794cb66_z.jpg

The hiss Dyric heard from moments ago darts around the crates, and it seems to be a large, old cat attempting to avoid the onslaught. The old man grins, baring cruel, broken teeth.

16902360016_641a591d7c_t.jpg

"Exactly what I needed. You have made a grave error, heroes. Once disturbed, the Cold Circle is relentless in silencing its opposition. Now, please..."

The man dramatically lowers his wand to point at the party. The undead coming crashing at them in an enormous wave.

Mortimer hastily hefts his shield, stepping out near the front of the party. He draws Erdy's handcannon from his back, a frown tugging at his mouth as he sees the enemies piling up in front of him.

"Aw, hell," he mutters, Firing the Handcannon at Demon Ray A from the Back Row.

"You know what, that's just completely unnecessary, we were just trying to find our ship and you come along with your undead creatures and your birds. There was no reason for this to escalate. Why can't evil mages just be evil mages without being difficult about it?"

Guts uses a Smelling Salts and attacks Wight A from the front row and then a Nostrum on himself and attacks Hrostulf from the front row. Dual Strike hitting same target each time.

OOC: Pie, I think you forgot to update my stats. I should have a few more items from the marketplace (as should Em). I also left the Scroll of Luck back in the Hall. The inventory count should be adjusted, too.

I believe I gave Em his stuff and he said he'd already paid you for them. Can you list what needs to be changed (minus the scroll which I've removed)?

OOC: Thanks for choosing me, Pie! I made a stop to the Marketplace; Em should have 208 gold, and I should have 295. I bought 2 Neautralizers, 2 Tiger Balms, 10 Remedies, and Em's items which I will hand over shortly. Scuba is second-in-command.

"What the hell is Cold Circle?" Thalion asked no one in particular as his pulled out his dagger.

Thalion attacks Wight D from front row.

I pull out Requiem and fire an arrow at Wight E from the back.

Sounds like another cult. Eubric ought to set up some sort of registry at some point, I keep losing track of all the crazy groups running around.

"Cold Circle are necromancers. I don't know what their grand plan is, but I doubt it involves us. Might as well kill 'im while we're here, though, I guess."

Erik clamps his Topaz between his teeth, lets out an awkward yell, and jumps into the mass of Snowy Owl Peck Mob B, hacking at the owls with his Titanic Axe. (Front Row, melee attack, Topaz is just for shield rolls.)

Mizuki swiped twice at the Snowy Owl Peck Mob A from the Back row with her Dual Gladii. "So basically crazy magic users ?"
