Thinking about TC26 started to reinvent wheel :)

Some idea for TC26

this would be steered track section

then would come non steered, over which could be some tipping bed

That steering section has issues, mainly with that drive. It would need some reduction before track drive gear/wheel. Also geometry is not the best. It is under some stress.

Most probably won't have time to solve that :(

If there are multiple track sections, I presume that turntable is not going to connect to a freely rotating superstructure. Does the drive need to go through the turntable at all?

There is long time idea in my mind about smaller GT3RS . Main stopper is smaller engine.

But it is just 1 stud shorter. Some option could be, if there would have been 5L bar. Maybe there is something else?

Also was thinking to use as piston/rod this

This is similar to the first idea I had as well. I wonder if it might work better with this part.

This way you are not constrained my bar length.

This issue with this design is still the size. You still need 8 (functionally 9) modules of width, which is a lot of space in a 15 wide car. I secretly I want the option to work for a WRX as well, so steering space will be needed.

Yes, it shoud work, Ithink. But still, width then is still an issue. 

There should be some few wrenches in my sons pile of lego, but could not find any. With those it could be possible to get narrower width. Yes, it would look strange, but main engine principle could be covered,

I'd be quite interested to see how it would work with those wrenches! I know I have one, but it might be in the bin of minifigure parts at my parent's house, so I'm not sure if I'm able to experiment with it right now

I have a couple, so I'll if I can test it. The handle is a little short considering the stroke length, so it may bind in the connector as it cycles.

Great minds think alike! I just got a bag of these to use as Engine connecting rods in a mid scale (9 studs long) V12.

I'll keep you posted on the progress. Meanwhile, if you need me to experiment with the part on your behalf, just let me know what you wosh to know. :)

This works smoothly. And also allows for a piston of sort to be attached (note the round 1x1 plate)

However, I cannot think of a way to have the left and right side work together without offsetting them 1/2 stud. Ideas?

Maybe it would work even without offset, as there is pretty big play? Especially, if they were really on opposite sides. Making that offset could ruin compacteness lenhgtwise.

There isn't enough play unfortunately.

However, your comment made me think, what if I added some?

And this worked - replacing the axle with a 2L bar.

But this way, all rods would go up and down at the same time, which isn't realistic.

So I introduced a flex bar and it looks very promising.

It can probably only be driven by one side but that shouldn't be an issue for a fake engine anyway.

Also, a 'flower' 1x1 round tile fits perfectly on top of the wrenches/rods. It simulates cylinders nicely.

 

I'll work on proper bracing and add the other wrenches.

Then should probably open up a thread to share the technique with everyone.

For those two it is OK. In some flat layout, it would work as expected.

This piston configuration is perfect to do VW's VR6 Engine. It's an inline V6. As there is a good article on wikipedia i think it's the best to leave out the description on how it works and looks and just add a link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VR6_engine
