[TC5] Tiltcabin Off-Road Racer

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Recently, I bought a 9393 Tractor set from a toy store near me, and I liked both the a-model and b-model very much. They have a lot of playability for a relatively small number of parts, and a nice looking color scheme. Plus, it's my highest part count set below 600, so I decided to build something out of it.

At first I researched about vehicles with different sized front and rear tires to see what I can build, but in the end I decided to go with something original. Here is the first draft of what I am building:

It's an off-road racer that tilts when cornering in order to change its center of gravity. Currently only the til/steer mechanism is in place, but the playability in this state is promising :)

Currently I am thinking of using only 9393, but I may opt to choose one of the following sets and use parts from it for additional features/aesthetics.

42027: For the pullback motor and green parts, but I'm not sure I can use the pullback motor because of my weird rear axle configuration.

42021: For the suspension parts, but we'll see how it turns out.

42001: For the rubber bands and orange parts.

my understanding of the rules is that the parts have to come from 2 distinct sets - 3rd not allowed even if the parts remain under 600

Wow cool! I can't wait too see the finished product!:thumbup:

Thanks. I am eager to build it too, unfortunately I can only build for 1 or 2 hours on some days of the week, so progress is a little slow.

Yes, that is correct. Sorry for the misunderstanding, I edited the ambigious sentence

I really like this concept!it would be awesome to see it incorperated in something utilizing power functions.

I've been working on the front axle&body and It is much sturdier now. I've also increased the overall length, rear axle is reinforced and pushed back, and front axle is grown in size. I like how the front looks.

I've also decided to use 42027. The amount of green parts will sure come in handy.

Agreed, I'll try pf'ing this when the contest is finished, if I am satisfied with the result.

Hi everyone, I had some time to build over the weekend, so it's time for an update. I tried to add pull-back motor to rear wheels, but it actually reduced playability because it prohibited reversing, and was not very stable with this kind of articulated chassis. So I dropped the idea and returned back.

- Work on the bodywork is coming along nicely

- Adjustable seat added

- Strengthened the back of the chasis

Todo:

- Working steering wheel

- Front section of the cabin

- Maybe a rear spoiler

- Any other idea that pops into my mind

P.S: sorry for the bad photo quality, took them this morning while trying not to be late for work.

Its a very good build, but I think the rear and roof could be a little better...

Thanks. The rear part will get a rework once I figure out the mid section.

Interesting mechanism. I hope you post a video to show how it works when you finish! :sweet:

I'm planning to make a short video. And once the model is finalized, I'll do a digital model (and maybe my first instructions, who knows?)

Good progress! It would be cool if you build some kind of fake engine in rear instead of those strange green liftarms.

Thanks. It's a nightmare trying to add a function to rear axles with limited parts. It would be much more easier if I had some clutch gears at my disposal. That being said, I'm not satisfied with the rear end either, so I'll see what I can do.

It is not necesary to make fake engine with moving pistons. I think it would be enough to build some grey-black block that looks like engine. You can also add exhaust pipe.

I did some more work this week on the model. I built the middle section, added a fake engine, and working steering. I also spent some time yesterday building a simple lightbox, and I am satisfied with the outcome. Hope you guys like it too.

And here is a photo of my lightbox:

15798931291_12fe05355c_c.jpg

It's 50x50x70 cm. I think this should be enough for small to medium models. I'm planning to add a third light & diffuser to the top sometime. The diffusers are made of tracing paper and a lot of the light gets reflected & scattered. Should I add some reflective sheet to cover the light sources?

TODOs on the model:

- Some more work on the engine

- Rethink the roof

- Sides of the rear part of the cabin are too empty,

- Rear lights

- Maybe change the angle of the rear mudguards

I like how you've built fake engine. I've meant exactly something like this. By the way how do you operate steering? I can't see any gear for "HOG"...

Thanks, I like it too. You operate the steering by tilting the cabin :)

This is getting better and better...

I like the colour of the chair, that makes it really pop.

The fake engine is not my favorite part though, too many exposed pins for my taste.

Everyone is posting awesome entries for the contest, so I thought I should post a teaser too :)

I've wasted spent all day building the model in MLCad, then I thought to myself, why miss this opportunity to learn LPub? I'll try to finish it in time for the contest, but currently the video (although it will be a short one) has higher priority :)

Here is the final update. I've done some minor changes here and there

- Added floodlights to roof

- Minor engine update

- Handbrake in the cabin :)

- Rear lights

very good model, but where is the instruction?

i want this

as the original 9393 b model

Thank you, I am glad you like it.

One thing though, I've seen your comments on the other TC5 threads too, and they seem a bit demanding. I hope you are aware that instructions are not mandatory for this contest. Anyone who chooses to provide them is doing so by their own good will.

As for my case, the lxf file is ready but it seems I forgot to upload it yesterday in the last minute panic. I will upload it tonight. You can download it then. But if you want pdf instructions, you'll have to wait some more, as they are about %25 complete.
