  1. (For any mods wondering that's the first line of Beowulf in the original old English, translated as 'Listen! We --of the Spear-Danes in the days of yore, of those clan-kings-- heard of their glory. how those nobles performed courageous deeds.') Turning to a rather earlier part of the middle ages than most Castle builds, this is the first in a three build series I made last year based on the Anglo Saxon epic poem Beowulf, the longest surviving work in Old English. The story of Beowulf revolves around three fights between Beowulf and different monsters. First up is Grendel, a lumbering giant descended from the biblical Cain, who terrorises the golden hall of Heorot every night to stop the music and feasting there. Beowulf wrestles with the monster and tears off its arm, leaving him to run back to his lair to A few more pictures can be found here. Fun fact: in the lord of the rings books, Meduseld was very much based on Heorot, both Golden halls of saxon-esque kings. Astute fans here might notice that, in this case, the visual influence has definitely flowed in the other direction! Constructive feedback welcome, but this is long since demolished and so I may be unable to take it on board with immediate effect... :P Parts two and three to come!
  2. Royal Brick Customs Shop is pleased to announce the release of a new item Dragon Wings: The Dragon Wings fabric accessory is available in three colors, white black (plain, no printing), and dark red. Enjoy, ~RBC
  3. Before the war, life in the isle of Morkerna was simple. Everyone lived peacefully, and the town was reasonably safe. And I was innocent. I was a young girl with few worries. I was happy. Isolated as it is, I had hoped that the war wouldn't affect Morkerna much. Indeed, at first, it seemed as though life would go on as normal. But the war affects everyone, and avoiding it can only delay its effects. The impact was subtle at first: a few men gone to battle, an old knight killed. But as time went on, the war began to change Morkerna even more. The atmosphere became tense; nobody felt safe, and it seemed like a fight could break out any minute. People that I knew began to be killed. Life had changed. After a month, I realized that I needed to do something. One day, I saw children walking down a road pushing a catapult, preparing to fight. When I returned home that night, I found my parents dead, killed by supporters of the Desert King. That was when I realized that if I didn't get involved in the war, everyone would be changed for the worse. I joined the armies of Ulandus and went into battle. We went through many battles, large and small... Along the way, I met a wizard named Gremlon. I took up his offer of protection, and he saved my life during a failed siege. But all the same, I do not trust him; he is too unwilling to share information. It feels as though there is something he is hiding from me, and it worries me. The war, ultimately, has destroyed my life. In the past, I had hoped to be a simple townsperson, living in Morkerna without having to worry about war. Now, with my parents dead, I must fend for myself, while figuring out how to deal with Gremlon. ___ Enjoy! You can see more photos on the flickr albums: 1 2 3
  4. I just finished my second MOC revolving around Robin Hood, about Little John. This set includes a variety of Robin Hood-esque features and accessories, and 8 minifigs. Any feedback is much appreciated. This set is also a project on Lego Ideas, where you can read more details about the MOC: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/109893. I also figured this MOC could bring up some interesting discussions about BURPs and raised baseplates :) I have posted a few pics below. You can see these and other pics in higher res on Flickr: https://www.flickr.c...157655406990588
  5. Hello, After an long break from castle i want show you my new creation. When I saw the wall technique from Brick Vader and Mr. Moova i was in love and must also build an MOC with this style. But now the pictures. Watch all photos on Flickr. Hope you like it and wish all an nice Sunday evening. cya markus
  6. Hi all, After getting into Lego again about a year ago I've bought lots of sci fi and city sets. I'm working on my first castle moc. I am looking for advice regarding interesting castle type mini figs. I have 70400 The Forest Ambush and love the guys with the silver helmets. I am looking for some more variety for my castle like knights or king type mini figs. I can't find any others at Toys r us or on amazon. Can anyone suggest some mini figs I should look out for on EBay or Bricklink?

  8. The Elven cities of the Northwest burn. The Elven Queen has regrouped and entrenched on the Forest Keep. Assesing her remaining troops, she receives notice that the Emperor is marching with a huge army to meet the Dragon King, who is besieging the Human city of Der-Golad. Bringing forth three battalions of her best troops (those who remain anyway), she will ride with the Emperor and his allies to stop the Dragon King and his forces. Her daughter stays behind with the keep's garrison and Eagles. Im finished building the elves and dwarves. I'm building two more batallions of Emperor's troops and a few Goblin Kings to use as shock troops for the Dragon King's army (11 in total plus 2 dragons).
  9. Bitter cold was sweeping into Mitgardia from the north, freezing everything in its path. But the citizens of Mitgardia would not flee, instead the construction of a mighty fortress was ordered, as a base from which to repel this new enemy. Rekkrfell, the warrior mountain: I will be completing Rekkrfell, and its my biggest castle yet. C&C welcome
  10. Whilst the war rages in the North, in the western lowlands, in the middle of nowhere, the Crossroads Inn is always open for weary travelers. The Innkeeper, his wife and wife's sisters will receive all who come for rest, food and if they bring enough gold or gems, top notch weapons. The Innkeeper, a master smith, has his shoppe behind the Inn, whilst the open air armory, eatig tables and coziness of the hostesses invite everyone who can afford a good nights rest, a hearty meal, a razor sharp souvenir and a merry good time. Since I run on a very tight budget, I paint my bricks gray (airspray). Hope you like it. 11. In the northern plains beyond the elven cities, lies the human city-stronghold of Der Golad. Ruled by its wise king, the city serves as a human enclave in the north and as protection against the evil schemes and machinations of the Dragon King and his henchmen. The king, blood related to the mighty Emperor, has witnessed the utter destruction of the elven cities by the Dragon King and his monstrous army, who has steamrolled thru all that opposes him, aided by fearless armored uruks, giant trolls, dragons and evil potentate warlocks. Sending word to the Emperor, the people of Der Golad prepare for the great siege that will come as part of the Dragon King's campaign to ensnare the North into his power. But Der Golad's walls are impregnable, they possess the finest archers of the north, and every citizen has taken arms to defend their city and livelihood. A mercenary company, led by Kara the Amazon and Rustius have come forth to fight for the King of Der Golad, albeit for the right price. Time is running short, and allies are in scattered in the wind. 12. My build for Round 6 of The Tourney at MOCpages. I chose to build a section of the city Harfleur, with Henry V making his triumphant entry after the town's surrender. The city's walls, towers, and houses, have all sustained damage from the siege. The only buildings set square to the base are the red house, and two small sections of the wall. Both houses have full interiors and working doors. See all the details here: link Thanks for looking
  13. Hi All, Coltherstone Castle is complete! After 10 months of building the 12 sections I've finally finished. I've really enjoyed building this castle which is my 3rd MOC (or my 3rd through to 14th if we count individual sections). Probably the most challenging part was building the stain glass windows on the keep as I redid these several times before I was happy. For those of you who haven't been following, the sections (in build order) are: 1. Barracks 2. Blacksmith (Corner) 3. Town Square 4. Archery 5. Royal Gardens (Corner) 6. Keep 7. Dock (Corner) 8. Stables 9. Houses 10. Gatehouse 11. Tavern (Corner) 12. Warehouse I'd like to thank everyone who has followed this build and provided feedback and comments along the way. For any Australians wanting to see this in the brick I will be displaying at Sydney Brick Show April 18-19. In terms of what's next for me I'll be focusing on work and a big university assignment for the next month. After this I've got some new build ideas (smaller ones) and I'm also planning on joining GoH. Thanks. The full album on Flickr is here: https://www.flickr.c...th/16862497746/
  14. Hi All, This is the last section of my castle - the Warehouse. A cart has just loaded up and is heading off. Now that I've completed all 12 sections I now have to put it all together for some photos. C&C welcome. Thanks.

  18. Hello again, I wanted to write a short suspenseful and action-packed bit with some espionage, and the build to go with it. The MOC is based on a real medieval kitchen at Hever Castle, England (click on the picture for the FLICKR link). This is also a global storyline update for Lands of Roawia. Hope you like it... --------------------------- Something wasn’t right, besides what the Duke of Ainesford was blabbing on about; no that cook…he was taking far too long to clean up the ale he himself had spilled on the stairs. And Captain Tavish was certain he was pausing to listen to what was being said on the Speaker's Floor, strictly against the rules for “the help” here at this Great Congress of Lenfald. The grizzled archer nudged Sir Caelan Munro sitting next to him, but the Baron barely noticed as he listened to Ainesford's speech and replied, “Can you believe what this pompous jester here is advocating? Full compliance with the new king, improper marriage and all! I just lost all respect for the Duke...” Tavish shook his head in mild frustration at Sir Caelan and got up to check on the cook, but he had barely made it halfway there when the cook suddenly collected his rags and left. Now that was entirely too coincidental… The Captain headed down the hallway to find him but was immediately accosted by the two ever-present and intellectually-challenged guards waiting there. Security at the Great Congress was incredibly tight due to the volatile nature of what was being discussed; no one except the castle guards themselves were allowed any weapons whatsoever, and all the delegates and staff were sequestered inside the castle for the duration of this critical assembly. Upon seeing the archer they held out their halberds to stop him, but Tavish was way ahead of them. “Ah, there you are my good lads, I am here to report an illegal weapon, one of the delegates has a knife, I clearly saw it. Here, let me point him out.” Excited that they finally had something real to do, the two looked like dogs waiting to go fetch a thrown stick. The Captain deliberately motioned at the middle of the delegates on the far side of the largest hall in all of Lenfald, and pointed indiscriminately, “there, that one wearing dark green.” The two were halfway across when they realized nearly every delegate there was wearing the official color of Lenfald. The archer entered the Great Kitchen impatiently as he searched for the man, to no avail; he wasn’t there. It was incredibly busy in the hot room, but there was one cook removing the entrails from a goose who he grabbed by the arm after the man objected to his presence. “Did a cook just rush through here?” “Oh no, I haven’t seen a cook all day!" he spit out sarcastically. "Look about you mate, you’re in a kit…” he didn’t get any farther as he was suddenly and violently shaken. “Tall, thin, muscular, with a goatee and a deep tan like he has been in the…” a sinking feeling hit Captain Tavish as he finished his own sentence, “…desert.” “Oh, the new bloke,” the cook muttered resentfully. “Yeah, he’s in the side kitchen over there.” “New bloke? But the staff has been sequestered!” “Aye but we ran short o’ help and contracted from outside…” Now Tavish’s stomach was turning, and not from the sight of the goose’s entrails. He shot down the side hall and found the door to the secondary kitchen locked from the inside. He was not a slight man however and he burst through it after four body slams, only to face an arrow shot at him. Quickly turning to present a smaller target the shot barely missed, and Tavish then plunged into the small kitchen. It had two ovens, one to his left and another to his right with a window facing the outer ward of the castle. A massive pot of some concoction was bubbling away in that fireplace, and two cooks were to his left, down and bleeding in front of the other oven. To his right across a table full of foodstuffs and dishes stood the dubious cook, now smoothly knocking another arrow. As Tavish reached for a large pot to try and deflect the shot, the cook instead leveled the shot at the window and fired the arrow out of it. Instantly Tavish knew he had just lost, for two things came to his eye; the arrow had a note tied to it — the spy had just successfully gotten the word out as to whatever he had heard. And the other thing was personally alarming; the cook had a tattoo of a crow on the inside of his arm--the same kind of decoration that the fearsome Areani have to show their allegiance to Lenfald's enemies the Loreesi— that this was going to be one bloody fight, perhaps the Captain's last. So he didn’t wait, and threw the pot at him as hard as he could, catching the spy in the ribs. That should have doubled him over, but the desert-dweller barely noticed it. He produced a curved Loreesi dagger from inside his shirt and a second knife and attacked with both, while Tavish grabbed a kitchen knife and jar of seeds, and the two went at each other with full force. The jar wound up shattered as it absorbed a crushing blow from the dagger, and Tavish gave him a brutal slash across the shoulder, which again the Areani barely seemed to notice. In the flurry, the archer had sustained four bloody cuts from the spy and knew he wouldn’t last long against this seemingly inhuman opponent. Then the Areani reacted to something over Tavish’s shoulder and a jar came flying out of nowhere and hit the spy in the head, shooting flour everywhere, clouding up the air. Sir Caelan Munro suddenly appeared and dashed by the Captain, attacking the cook with a meat cleaver. The sight would have been hilarious if it weren't for the circumstances of their opponent being a deadly Loreesi agent. Even dazed the Areani fought like a lion until Tavish grabbed a small iron pot and slammed it into the side of his head. Still the spy stood, but wavered. The temporary lull in the action allowed the sound of the bubbling pot to come through, and both Sir Caelan and Tavish simultaneously had the same idea, grabbing the spy by the arms and shoving him toward the fire. They forcefully pushed the Areani's head down into what turned out to be a lovely pea soup, now at full boil. The spy struggled mightily as he burned, but both his opponents held on until he went limp. “We need to question him, I think,” Caelan barely managed and finally Tavish relented, letting the man fall to the floor with horrendous second-degree burns now all over his head and face, also covered in a slimy green. The two friends stood huffing from their exertion until Baron Munro finally blurted, “You left just when the Duke was getting interesting…” "I doubt that very much." Tavish stumbled to the window and cursed. “The blighter must have shot right over the outer wall. Jig’s up now; whatever was on that note is long gone.” Just then the same two guards who had stopped the Captain earlier now slammed into the kitchen. They took in the Areani, the mess, and the two hurt cooks to their left and looked furiously at them. Sir Caelan only waved at the spy on the floor and by way of explanation stated indignantly, “He ruined the soup.” Two days later, a man dressed in fine red clothing stood on a tower of the King’s Castle, and held out his arm expectantly. A bird came down swiftly and alighted on his arm, and he gently caressed the falcon. He then unfastened the message tied to its leg and began reading carefully. His brow furrowed slightly after reading a few lines; then a calmness came over him. He looked towards the vast horizon and paused to consider everything that had taken place in the last few weeks. Then Loreesi Prince Jarius tucked the message into his pocket and, carrying the bird with him, walked purposely towards the stairs of the tower. ------------------------- Hope you like the build and story; comments are welcome!
  19. Hey! At a small river lies General "sir" Cedric fortress Wilton Castle, the castle has not been involved in significant contention, but was one of the first fortresses built by the Lion Clan. People also seek out happily to the castle to fish in the river, and maybe even look at the beautiful view from the main tower. 20. A lazy, floating breeze blew through the forest. The dead leaves rustled and danced to its music as the little animals around gamboled in and out of their holes. Presently the wind died down and the leaves glided back down, too. The animals pricked up their ears as the whole forest seemed to catch its breath and wait. You could almost hear its heartbeat, sliding along, then faster, faster, rattling through the trees. Expectancy hung in the air. Suddenly the crunch of a human footstep broke in on the hushed, waiting stillness. It was a light step, eager and youthful, perhaps a little hurried. Abruptly the young man jumped up and tipped the end of a branch that hung down in front of him. He couldn't help it. He was too happy. Momentarily, he sped up, his eyes flashing with eagerness. He was coming back home! But then he slowed down, paused for a second. It had been so long! Who knew what awaited him, beyond those taciturn trees, over that silent hill? What might not have happened during his long absence? An undefined fear welled up in him. He crunched it down, stepping out firm and determined. And as he did so, his confidence seemed to return. He thought, with glittering eyes, of the welcome they would give him. His mother! The energy he gave to his next steps reflected the almost trembling enthusiasm that seemed to be carrying him forward with roller coaster speed. The crest of the hill was in sight, a few more steps, a short bound, and then - his journey's end! For a second, he looked down at the path, gathering himself for the moment he had waited for so long. He looked up. His keen, eager eyes grasped the landscape in front of him. But it was not what he had expected to see. He staggered backwards. A cold, numbing chill overwhelmed his heart. Some idle portion of his mind found time to think he must surely be dead, his heart was frozen. But a heavy, thumping beat soon undeceived him. He felt crushed. No! No, it was impossible! He drew a long breath. He did not believe it. His eyes were tricking him. All he had to do was go down there. Nothing had changed. Everything was still the same. The grey walls of his parent's castle would still smile down at him. The porter would still greet his voice with a shout of welcome. The rusty drawbridge would still creak on its hinges. It would still exasperate him by its tardiness. His mother would still come running down the walls and welcome him... he dropped to his knees, choked with sorrow. Staggering, he pushed forward the last few steps until he reached the peak. From there he looked down at the somber ruins, one lonely tower still pointing its finger to heaven. No. It would never be the same. A non-photoshopped image: This was based off Ian Spacek's Myriad, for the Symphony of Construction contest. I tried to follow the music with the story although I'm afraid some parts have to be read rather quickly and others slowly! Thanks for checking it out, comments are welcome!
  21. Hi All, Here are photos of the next section of my castle, the Tavern. This is now 11 of the 12 sections completed so I'm almost done. I've made the corner tower of this section timber to add something a bit different to the castle and break up the greyness of the castle. C&C welcome. 22. Credit for the tree design goes to Brother Steven. This is my second largest build ever at 64x48 (plus the border), and weighing over 21 pounds. It was built over a period of 8 days. There's a full interior, and the castle doors work. 24. Hi! This was a project that took way more time than planned to finish. It started about a year ago when I was experimenting a bit with my dark orange wedge plates, trying to fit them together to make nice peaked roofs. From there I added the timber framed/Fachwerk walls and after that it went a couple of months when I didn't add anything to the build. Eventually I regained interest in it and I started building the landscape and laying out foundations for where I wanted the walls and towers to be. I finished the small tower and the gate and the bridge before other things got in the way and the build went into hibernation again. But, some weeks before today I was finally done with a huge batch of sorting and had a lot of inspiration to go back to building and I finished of the castle quite quickly. I just had to wait a little bit for a Bricklink order and a day with enough daylight to get the pictures. I thought that it would be fun to put the classic Lion Knights in this castle. They weren't my favourites when I was younger, but now I really like how their bright colours contrast against the more sober grey and tan in the landscape. I also like to combine the classic torsos with the new shiny helmets and weapons that we have now, I think it shows that the classic factions works just as nice (if not better) as the new ones. While I surely hope that the rumours about a 2016 Castle theme is true, I'm not going to be devastated if that fails since we already have so many good minifigs and pieces from decades of LEGO Castle. TL;DR: I love LEGO Castle and here is a castle I built to show that! More pictures can be found on my Flickr: Link /Etzel
