OK, perhaps I should change the topic title as this one is definitely a schooner now. I was not liking the “Pickle” profile. It just seemed too narrow and angular. The difference is really only a plate’s worth to either side, but to my eye it makes a dramatic change. I suppose my latent desire to join the Marblehead club came though as this one developed. No she’s not the curvy 18th century USS Hanna type; that would be hard at this scale. Instead I let the limitations of the technique push the design somewhat forward in history, let’s say early to mid 19h century. Currently she’s really just a mock up and the proportions aren’t set yet, so if you spot something now is the time to point it out, not once I’ve already committed time and materials towards a completed product. I’m considering swapping her battery out with Blanid, but I’m not quite sure just yet. These carronades might just be too big. I decided that a Chase Maree would be a fascinating build, but would be better at something like mini-fig scale, like Reckless.

It’s good to have em home again. Yesterday was the last day of the exhibit, so Reckless, Nonesuch and the fleet are home safe. I took some more (better?) images before breaking down the display. Check them out here. At some point i plan to drag Reckless here out into the natural light for a shoot, but there are few things to fix first. Also had the chance to meet @ACPin while doing a “meet and greet” on Saturday, great guy. @Captain Edward Such glowing support. Thanks!

I'll have to take a picture of one disassembled, that's a good idea. No you didn't miss it. I've been super busy and dragging my Mega Blok over it. I know, get on with it already, right? This guy; makes a stink and disappears for few weeks. I'll get there...

Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
kurigan replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
@Captain Genaro I'm really liking this new direction. I'm seeing a lot of Speedy's influence in there. A windlass might help you save on space where hatch ways and such are concerned. It'd be entirely appropriate for her size and apparent period as well. Can't say I'm a fan of either gun design. Though I'm working on developing the skills to do a revamp, The Foundry already has a few great ideas you may want to try out. Carronades would also be a great space saver and a completely appropriate armament for a gun brig as such. Something about that blue and yellow color scheme just pops too, doesn't it? @Legostone Well we've seen success in this style with his cutter Pride of Poseidon I don't think a Felucca like that is impossible but would likely require a jump up in scale. It seems to me that a technique like Maydayartist's for Revenge or Know your Piece's for his Schooner would do it the most justice. Jacob Nion: That was me... Bregir: She's coming along nicely. Looks like you have the gunports worked out nicely. Garden_y: What he said. -
The Coats/jackets. The ball joints of the figure's shoulders pass through the holes and pin it in place. No permanent modification required. the collars go around the neck, but aren't necessary if they're not appealing.

Geese guys, it would have been nice to at least be acknowledged, even if you all hate the idea. I mean that took a minute to put together.

[MOC] USS Poseidon - Minifig Scale First Rate Ship of the Line
kurigan replied to shiplover's topic in Pirate MOCs
First, let me chime in on praising the quality and intricacy of your rigging so far. Wow, great job mate! As to the thickness, I was meaning the diameter of the individual strands which make up one of your shrouds. With only your photographcs, and little size reference to go by, it seemed to me that they are only as thick, or maybe a bit thicker than those on my little sloops. Not trying to be a know-it-all, I really can't tell from back here, so I tried to phrase it in a question. I suppose something got lost in translation. Ow I'm not going to be a hypocrite here, I despised backhanded compliments, but I want you (and everyone) to understand, that even though you're doing things differently than I do and making decisions on which I may have gone another way, I respect the effort you're putting into this build. At first I didn't much like this her, but she's grow on me. Perhaps I didn't have faith she'd ever be completed, meeting the ignominious fate so many Lego SoLs meet. In any case I'm really getting behind this and find myself rooting for you to finish her. Do you have any plans for moving and/or displaying her publically? -
Nice build, but i gotta move it over to the MOC forum.

Though I don't expect this to be a particularly popular suggestion, may I offer the following for consideration? I've had a fair amount of success with my Quick and Dirty (QD) customs. Using my, not at all high-end, inkjet printer at home, I've been able to make simple but somewhat convincing custom torsos and jackets. When I took my designs to Staples to be printed the quality shot up dramatically at very little cost. Less than a dollar per 8.5" X 11" sheet. Perhaps the solution lies less in color coding than in actual uniforming? Examples of my works for consideration: Old tape and inkjet Newer tape and inkjet New Staples printed. (more on page 2 as well) Here's a PDF sampler of some of my designs if anyone want's to try them out. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0ByZ_mhZNzp2mY0RraUdWYzZGZGc

@Cousarmy0001 You and me both, but it's a budget problem first. I build what I do on a 0:00, $0 budget. More recently I've been able to use rejects from my store and even stole a few parts off the top for the likes of Reckless. Basically if you want to see me go bigger, buy some Lego from my store so I can afford to add to my personal collection. That, or find someone who wants to sponsor/purchase the build. I do have hopes, perhaps forlorn hopes, of building a proper frigate before I die. I have a crazy idea to use Bright Light Orange on the sides and Sand Green at the water line (to look like oxidized copper). Until I have hundreds of dollars to blow on sheer whimsy, ships will remain fantasy, and sloops will have to do in reality. I suppose if I tore down a few, I could pool resources to make one big, technicolor ship. At least a different color on either side..

Well I said I was all shipped out but I guess I lied. Really it’s all Phred’s fault. How? Well for Brickworld 2016, I shipped two of my smaller vessels off to him, and he put them on display as part of the Classic Pirates setup. I guess the old adage is true the fastest way to break something is to label it “fragile” and put it in the mail. When Nuisance and Bumblebee arrived they were something less than assembled. Nuisance was relatively easy to get back together, but Phred struggled with the cheap Mega Bloks on Bumblebee. Instead he replaced the gray inner plates with brand new Dark Tan Lego. When Bumblebee returned she was still partially assembled with Phred’s plates. I got her back together with the old grey but Phred said he wouldn’t miss the Dark Tan, and instead suggested I put them to good use. See? Ok so where am I going with all this? Well I wanted to make another cutter, based on Bumblebee but larger as to accommodate a swivel gun like Friends Goodwill. Unfortunately I had only one of those plates in my own stock so the hull couldn’t get any bigger, so I started mocking one up from more abundant colors. That where this one comes in. Code named “26”, guess why, I thought to combine this concept with recycled rigging from Bumblebee’s predecessor, Ghost. It’s gone pretty well but the colors just don’t work. I think she deserves a more realistic color scheme. If only I had a few Dark Tan 2 X 3 or more 2 X 4s but they just aren’t available, even in my own stock. So, I went parts hunting/scavenging around. Since she was going to be a man-of-war, I thought a red paint job on the inside would suit well and started counting up plates. In the end I found I had more than enough and set to laying out replacement gunwales. In the end inspiration dragged me kicking and screaming through the night to arrive at yet another hull to complete. The profile of codename “Gherkin” here is based on the replicas of HMS Pickle (get it?) Though I intended her to be a costal type schooner, I’m hatching other ideas as I mess around with her. I could go with a schooner and her rig would even likely be less parts consuming, but this afternoon another idea struck me and I can’t quite shake it. Though Gherkin here is on the small side, I could have a neat little Chase Maree on my hands instead. Somehow though, despite the prolific use of that type of lugger during the Napoleonic wars, they are somewhat enigmatic today. It seems the only such vessels I can gleam any data off of are HMS Coureur and the modern replica Grayhound. Both are vey similar and significantly larger than my tiny coaster here. So I put these questions to you all: First, does anyone have any reference on Chase Marees they’d be willing to share which might help me out with proportioning and arrangement? Secondly, what would you suggest: Schooner or Chase Maree?

Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
kurigan replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
@Jacob Nion Well, I actually went looking all the same, but didn't really find anything. In the past I've seen them but can't recall them on anything "creditable"; mostly just paintings and such. As I understand it, they are supposed to be a holdover from when war ships were really just boats with little wooden castles built on top from which men would jab at one another with pikes across the gap. Having turrets hanging out over the water gave an advantage in extending reach over the enemy deck. At some point someone though they looked pretty neat and started embellishing them. In time they became mostly decorative, kind of like the side galleries on Prins Willim or Kalmar Nyckel. They don't do much but look neat. Of course without reference it's all speculative. As for the possibilities, they don't seem very useful for guns. Unless they were huge, there wouldn't seem to be enough room to give a gun a wider arc of fire then just putting them on swivels out an open deck. Armoring them to add to their usefulness would add to another inherent problem; top hamper. That's the amount of weight a ship must support above the water. It's a key factor in the stability of a vessel. Perhaps not so much in BoBS or PotC, but in actuality ship designer needs to be careful about such things. Several ships have famously sank in calm seas due to metacentric imbalance. @Legostone First off, you're absolutely right about the rails. Keep them low. It looks slick and, see the above, is a good move historically. Secondly, I've created a monster with the rigging challenge. Great Job once again! @gedren_y That's a heck of a build. Not sure I'm a fan of the color scheme. She seems extremely long for her width. That whole section up forward that isn't pierced for guns, seems unnecessary. It's an ambitious build and I respect that. Don't know what to suggest for a rig. This long you could accommodate as many as 4 masts. Were you thinking square rig? -

@Jacob Nion Wo there cully. Never lost my cool. Perhaps we both need to watch the sarcasm though*. I do have a job to do helping to keep order though an we've had a problem with partisanship around these parts before. that's what really ruined TOR. Let's call it squaresy then and move on, eah? *Because it doesn't translate well in text and we wind up off topic. -
In the past it would seem that the staff have shied away from such general topics in part because information gets lost in the fray making it difficult to reference later on and they have a tendency to go astray. It's an old-school mentality, but a solid one. It's also to be considered that no one has yet thought of it. I'll leave it to higher-ups to decide, but personally I so no real harm in starting such a topic, based on the success of the general MOC thread. The thing is, though that the pirates forum really is a general forum just for such conversations, so in a way it would be a bit superfluous.

Why's that mate? Seems sort of exclusionary, even a bit hurtful. Seems to be quite contrary to the welcoming sprite of BoBS. Honestly you may be cutting off your nose to spite you face, but good luck with your research. -
If you look at my body of work and are inspired to think that we are in competition I assure you that you very likely hold a monopoly on that frame of mind.

Sorry, just doing my jab. You can host em on brickshelf though.

Ho there cully! Welcome aboard. I tell ya. I correct a lot of topic bumping around these parts as it's generally frowned upon. However in this case, you actually stand a chance of garnering a response as the topic isn't all that old and the originator is still an active member. Let me give you a few tips though. First, check out these links, so's you can keep yer nose clean. http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/topic/18718-site-guidelines/ http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/topic/19004-revisiting-old-topics-bumping/#entry776009 Now here something handy you can do to make sure the user you're addressing will take note of your comments/questions. Throw up a "@" in front of their username and they'll get an alert. Like this: @Cousarmy0001 mischa has a question for ya, mate.

Oh I though it looked good. It's not man-o-war style, but hat's a good thing here. I had started composing a bit about how you use less common, but historically valid elements as such to good effect. I thought better of it and deleted it, but there it is. Keep the long flat head, i works for this kind of vessel IMHO. The figure head, Horus is it? may be a bit large but it looks neat. If you wanna get fancy a 1 X 2 technic brick on it's side looks a lot like a "seat of ease" Have yo checked out Friendship of Salem? -

General MOC-Discussion, WIP-Help, and Teaser Thread
kurigan replied to Kolonialbeamter's topic in LEGO Pirates
I was going to keep this one to myself until it was finished but I just plain ran out of (useful) bricks. I suppose I could have been working on a BoBS introduction but I just built it up too much and it just stopped being fun. That’s the problem I've been having with my fleet. I just needed to build something for the enjoyment. Besides, I felt like I owed my little colony a better fort after putting it off for years. Right now I'd guess it's about 80% done. There's a lot of detail work to do and I'm not happy with the railings or crenellations. There's a lot of SNOT and gravity connections involved and it's mostly built from cast-offs, rejects and knock-offs which weren’t suitable for sale. There's always rejects amongst the white in a used lot, so I just need to be patient and wait for bricks. I actually like the look all the discolored bricks lend to the overall effect. When I gather up enough time and materials to finish it, my fort will get its own topic, but until then please enjoy these, admittedly low quality, images and let me know what you think.- 315 replies

Neat! We don’t see a lot of these. She came out pretty nice, especially for an experiment. I like your solution for the sweeps, but perhaps cones at the transition instead? -
Fourth wall, You're breaking the fourth wall! This was fun to read, thank you. Those are some rather well informed stevedores though.

So its the characters in the game getting an education, not the players/spectators then, yes? The latter seemed a bit odd, being a fantasy universe, but that's the first thing that came to mind.
