RE: criticisms, I think it's quite simple. If you are looking for constructive critism then you can ask for it, or not mention it and expect to receive some anyway. If you don't want any critism then just say that this was built just for fun, or that you are finished and not looking for ideas for improvement. The hashtag idea might also serve this purpose.

I dunno. Something about separating beginners and pros feels a little off to me. I mean, there are very talented "beginners" and there "pros" that are not inspiring at all. There are great MOCs, and not so great MOCs and everything in between. Too much variety and too many different criteria that we as individuals use to base our opinions on to pigeon hole things into beginner and pro. I doubt we could agree on what makes a MOC or a builder fall into those categories anyway. For example, just because someone charged money for barely understandable instructions for a poorly designed MOC doesn't make them a pro in my eyes.

[MOC] Volvo G970 Motor grader

Excellent job, this is one of those MOCs that I had to look twice before realising it was Lego -
Well, I guess with the number of replies this topic is getting, about the lack of posts ironically, is proof that EB and the technic forum is certainly not dead! When I click the little unread items icon at the top of this page I see all the posts in all the forums, and the Technic subforum seems like one of the most active to me. I think that as we have more and more access to more and more information, building techniques and so on, it tends to raise standards of MOC builders and what is expected of them in their own minds. Look at 10 years ago. There wasn't as much as there is now, and subconsciously we put ourselves in competition with everyone else. So MOCs that are great and finished are taking much longer to make with more time spent on them, while so called lesser MOCs (meaning MOCs built just for the fun of building for example) don't get posted anymore. In terms of constructive criticisms, on the rare occasions that I have posted a MOC I remember enjoying the constructive criticisms more than I thought I would, it made it feel like we were a group of mates trying to build something great together. So people really shouldn't be afraid of that. But I wonder how much Covid has effected all this. This year has been down right depressing! I certainly haven't felt like doing a whole lot of playing with Lego. But this is only temporary, things will be alright again soon I think, hope and pray. I don't know if you guys feel the same but maybe when I get my mojo back then perhaps the best thing to do would be to lead by example, and be the change you want to see so to speak, and post more WIP stuff, or stuff that has the completed mechanical work but not so much bodywork, or stuff made not to show off how amazeballs I am but just because I enjoyed making it.

Technic 2021 Set Discussion

Considering the cool factor of the new small tractor tyres that's not too bad for the first half. The really cool new stuff usually appears in the second half. -

BuWizz Motor [Video Test]
allanp replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@Zerobricks well that does make sense. Besides these motors will most likely be bought by enthusiasts who won't have any problems working with the current form factor. But thanks for the replies to my thinking out loud comments pretty sure I'll be getting some regardless. -
BuWizz Motor [Video Test]
allanp replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@Zerobricks Ok, thanks for the clear answers, and to both you and @Sariel for the sneak peak . Yeah, the diagonals as you put it, is that the relationship between the mounting holes and output locations? If so do you plan to have mounting holes aligned to both outputs? Also, is the half stud offset something that you think is worth changing? I mean, that section of the motor is two studs wide but the mounting holes are only 1 stud wide, creating that half stud offset. Yes it's easy enough to work around, and it might not be worth it to change, but was wondering what your thoughts were. Having the mounting holes be 2 studs wide with a middle slot (like the engine block or double ended pin connector) would make for easier integration IMHO. -
BuWizz Motor [Video Test]

Hey that's really cool. This might temp me to go to the BuWizz side! I don't know how much money they have invested into recreating the old buggy motors form factor, but that was the only thing I didn't really like about the old buggy motor. I wonder if the same internal motor would fit into an L-motor like casing, but with a similar internal gear ratio to the buggy motor (maybe only one stage of planetary gearing perhaps, or two stages with different sized sun and planet gears? I can't remember what the ratios actually are) because I think that would be more useful and easier to integrate into builds. -

Not in terms of mechanical realism. 42053 is possibly the only exception, like ever. You might be thinking of sets like 42100 and 8043? 42100 did bring us a lot of new parts, it moves smoothly and powerfully on its tracks and it's arm is strong. But I can't say that it was ever meant to show how the real thing works mechanically. It's still an impressively well engineered beast though. 8043 on the other hand just does nothing for me. No mechanical realism, weak, slow, jerky/wobbly movements and no new parts for the time.
-
That is true, 42053, the Arocs and the Unimog are all great examples of this. But then there is also 42030, 42114, the Sian and the defender that go against this. So I'm not sure there is any correlation to show licenced sets having more real authenticity. But like you say, when they are done right then a license can bring more real authenticity. It's just not a sign that it will.

Control+ General Discussion

The custom controls is a fantastic step in the right direction, well done and thank you TLG . Now just need less reliance on coding. I was a little disappointed to see that as soon as you put the custom controls in place you have to go straight to the code blocks again. I still don't get why they insist on making powered up so inaccessible to anyone with no interest in coding or code blocks or whatever. But this is still a great step in the right direction and look forward to what's to come. But I'll be sticking with PF for now. -

Agreed. To match the Class tyres we'd probably need a tyre greater than 80mm. However it's great to see these new, more realistic tyres for smaller models. -

The Porsche looks like a good fit for Mindstorms. Glad they are considering it for that theme rather than for Technic. Are the programmable LED lights new, control+ lights? I wonder what they mean by programmable, like, as there appears to be 8 lights, can they programmed to run in a sequence, like for an emergency vehicle, or 4 lights placed in a 2x2 trans yellow round brick to look like a rotating beacon light? And if there are lights, 4 motors and 2 sensors, wouldn't that need 7 ports at least (assuming all 8 lights go to 1 port as I hope is the case)? Also, is this the first time they have presented a set to the fan community and asked basically if we want it? I'm not a fan of self driving cars in any form they come in, but the prospect of new lights sounds promising. -

Motor Upgrade
allanp replied to Boxerlego's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I did a similar thing to one of my XL motors, by removing the outer ring gear entirely and gluing the rest of the internal gears into one solid mass of plastic, thereby removing all the internal gearing. Got everything lined up nicely so there's no friction or binding and the output now spins as fast as the internal motor at a few thousand rpm but obviously with less torque. I'd say it's slightly faster and more powerful that the old 9V ungeared 5x4 motor. -

Technic 2021 Set Discussion

All those cars, any realistic transmissions in any of them?! Also glad I'm not the only one lamenting the lack of pneumatics. I do like the monster truck licenses though. They are only pull backs so they'll probably not have new tyres. But combined with the recent planetary reduction hubs from 42099, the licenses open doors for a big monster of a monster truck in future!
