  1. The first thing I have to ask is what do you plan on doing with your train layout? You have a young daughter, do you plan on having trains for fun or want to be a serious collector and put them away? In answer to your first question, I went to a train show that had both Lego and other model trains, including N, HO, O, and other scales. I guess it varies on the type of train for sale and the amount of detail you want. I've seen locomotives that were like $300 a piece. A starter lego train set is $150 (US) retail. You can start with that. Yes it does come with plastic rails, but if you want to "upgrade" to 9v electric you can buy old 9v train track (metal rails) from Ebay or Bricklink or use ME models (http://www.me-models.com/store/index.php) to get compatible metal rails. The scale of Lego train hasn't changed since its started. The new Power Functions train remote is fairly easy to learn to use for children, so you and your daughter can enjoy lego time together. A train layout will increase the fun and look of your lego town. Yes, I'm completely biased, but the first time I got a lego train set, I knew I made the right decision that I had bought the train and became hooked on Lego trains.
  2. Good job with the moc. I wonder how it would look if the loco was dark blue (if all parts were available in dark blue), instead of regular blue. Great job with the custom decalling. Thank you for posting this. Ben
  3. I dont know about that... it might be a nifty idea. I seen it the Tower Bridge used as a railroad bridge with slight modification.
  4. My wife and I were honored and privileged to join LUCNY (Lego Users of Central New York) on their Lego Train display at the Central New York Train Show at the State Fair grounds (Syracuse, NY). I had to work Friday night, so we were unable to go until Saturday at noon. We were hoping to get there by 3:30 (4:00pm) but go kinda lost getting off the Thruway.... and I thought I had a good sence of direction. Anways, we met up with Kevin Salm and Brandon Pernat and then had some dinner and got to see their really cool Clubhouse. The next day we got there at 900 am, and the show opened up at 10 am. We brought a few things, not wasnt really all that necessary. We had a blast there for the day and it was nice to hang out with some old friends and meet a couple new ones as well. My brickshelf folder Stuff I brought: Hopper Trailers (pulled by a stock Lego tractor) Church Community Garden (which some kids said was a "jail") Fire Truck http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/medib/SyracuseTrains2011/100_7220.jpg Brown Box car Sante Fe "B" Unit I hope you enjoy the photos. Like I said, I had a good time with the rest of the group, and I hope we can do other events in the future.
  5. Hello Robiwan, could you repost the photo on this forum? Thanks.

    [MOC]Route 66

I think I can see what Ralph is saying with this, but I think I can see the "look" you were trying to achieve, the large vehicles on an itty-bitty road, at least that what your moc is saying to me, surrounded by "smaller buildings". Scale wise, I can see because this is kinda what Minifig Scale is if you look at Legoland Town, larger-sized vehicles with small buildings. Detail wise, it was very good. Personally, I think you should keep it the way it is, you captured a very good snap-shot of small town Americana. Ben

    Segway

Looks neat and looks fun. Great job. Klonik, if possible, could you post a photo of a minifig on the segway. Thanks. Ben
  8. Not to slam you, but this topic has already been asked already a few times. Eurobricks Discussion thread The 9v solution is shown here: 9V instructions The PF aspect changes things. There isnt any room in the engine or coal car to make it compatible with Power Functions. If you moved it back to the first truck on the Passenger car, you might be able to fit all the Powerfunctions stuff, but you would have to forfeit some room from the passengers. I hope this helps.
  9. It should be publicly viewable shortly. The .lfx file for the "help" to build the trailer legs is already viewable in my brickshelf account. Legomaniac's folder just needs to be approved by Brickshelf Moderation team, thanks. Ben
  10. do you have a brickshelf account? If so, you could upload the ldd file (.ldx file). The files are most likely in MyDocuments/Lego Creaions/Models. I uploaded the LDD file of the above picture, but will probably have to wait until the folder becomes viewable because the ldd file is automatically into an extractable zip file. Benjamins Brickshelf Temporary Files Hope this was helpfull, Ben
  11. I have to say that this model is very nice looking. Seeing multiple trailers like this at work (filled with corn), you captured the realism nicely. Very beautiful, I like the "lighting" on the sides, the "ejection system" at the bottom, and the bows on the top. The only criticism I have, and maybe this is just because I am used to Lego Town, but the legs on the trailer are a bit "small" and/or maybe plain for the trailer. Overall nice job on the model itself. Ben I accidently snapped a bungee cord on the trailer when I was learning how to use the probe. (when I was learning to grade corn). oops.
  12. I took a spin with my Superchief tonight and was quite shocked at the results, the smallish oval track wasnt able to adequately power the track to give the train too much steam. When I took a few cars off the track, the train went quicker. I might eventually have to do up another A and B untis, with the A untit 9V motorized. Just looking at one of my track pieces, a bit of minor corrosion, so I switched it out. Still surprised at how much weight 12 or so cars are one 9v train motor.

    Canadian Eh?

Maybe he snuck in, paid friends, duped strangers, or the most likely got their family members to help them out. My wife says ours is not for sale, but over $150 for the set is not surprising for these. As far as the worried lady in front of us, I never found out if she and her family got their copy, though I assumed she did. I stil had my fingers crossed, but I was just looking forward to the double VIP points.
  14. These cars are really sweet. Really holiday appropriate. Can't wait to see an updated video. Great job.
  15. I love the look of the fire truck and all the details of it. Its a great build. Nice job.

    Canadian Eh?

Very nice looking t-shirt. You totally nailed us in line. ;) A lot of people were asking about my engraved bricks and also were amazed at all the keychains that Bonnie and I had on. We endured the 2 hour wait to get into the store and we were lucky to get a minifig set (#490 of 500). I thought there were only supposed to be 300 of the special minifig sets. Im happy that there were more than 300. It was nice to see familiar faces.
  17. Thanks. I was very fortunate to buy like 4 10002 Club Cars when they came out from Shop@Home for $37.50, versus $100.00 I paid for just 1 4547 original (off Ebay) before it got re-released.
  18. If you get the emerald night, you better save some money in your budget for PF parts for it, or else it will just be a "push" train. The recommendation is a XL motor for it to run it, a PF battery, and a receiver.
  19. Pleasure Dome... have you seen my Sante Fe Super Chief Club Car conversion? If I wanted to do this conversion today, I wouldn't do it due to the high cost of parts. I hope you enjoy the picture. I can't believe that the PF motor is like that with only 7 units. That's why I like the older 9v motors. I have one 9v motor in the "A" unit only, with 1 "B" unit, 1 baggage car, 1 mail RPO, 2 sleepers, 2 diner cars, 1 observation, and 1 Club Car. I'll have to set up the track and test the drivers to see the performance, but if I remember correctly, I don't think it was too bad.
  20. I would LOVE to see if Lego came out with a tan pullman car to go with the Emerald Night. If its got to be a full passenger set, I would hope it would be based on a 7740 Intercity Trainset. Im getting tired of seeing Lego put out ICE-stylled train sets. Then if not 7740, then maybe a metroliner-type set.
  21. I cant believe that these (Frisco Fe)trains are available on e-bay are only $10 plus $10 shipping. Versus over $100 (used) on Ebay for the original superchief.
  22. The microscale train looks nice. Lego needs to include a "Tony Sava" minifig in their next train set.
  23. 10,000 seems daunting with beta, even open beta. When International Cuusoo becomes FULLY live, and perhaps with a push from Lego.com and maybe perhaps Lego Universe?, 10,000 votes is still a hard earned achievement but attainable.
  24. I agree with others... it looks gorgeous and it works awesome. Thanks for posting this.
  25. Very cool Aussie Jimbo. Not to take this discussion thread too far into the tangeant, but I was watching Thomas the Train, and I saw they did a story on narrow-guage trains. If you were looking for inspiration, they have a whole cast of "characters". Also, it was interesting to see how much the regular guage trains treated the narrow-guage engines... with contempt and hostility...
