Base Technic Set - a Cuusoo idea?
le60head replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I agree with schermvlieger. The TECHNIC sets from recent years seem to rely on the "cool" look of the models, and not on what you can build with the parts in the set on your own. That is understandable since most of today's kids probably have less patience and are in general more distracted by video games than we were. Maybe the only TECHNIC sets that still provoke you to build your own machines are from the LEGO Education range. -
Thanks for the clarification. I don't own a gopro, but still very useful :) On a side note, i once attached to a lego assembly the bit from a tripod, which screws to the bottom of a camera. It looks something like that. Not sure if a gopro has the same screw hole, but it could be used for normal cameras.

Some update: I've undertaken a remake of the same model. I think it should be a Mark-IV. What I wanted to change is the steering system. This time I'll use the Power Functions Servo motor, which was not available when i built the model shown in this topic. The reason is that the rubberband steering solution does not always work in practice :) The propulsion motor is either going to be the same, or a pf-medium. Stay tuned!

I don't think so. The EV3 IR Beacon has a special button ( the one at the top center) which turns beacon mode on/off. When in beacon mode, it sends a continuous signal to the Mindstorms EV3 IR Sensor. Another difference is that the EV3 Beacon has two Infrared LEDs that are placed at an angle. This gives the Infrared signal a wider coverage i guess. The PF remote only has one IR LED to emit the remote signal. So no, it seems the PF IR remote has never been supposed to be used as a beacon.

PF -> 12v motor, safe limit for IR receiver
le60head replied to roamingstop's topic in LEGO Train Tech
From my experience the v1 IR Receiver can handle 12 volts. I do know if it is safe, but it works. I have modded a PF Battery box to run on a DC power supply instead of batteries. It is currently powered by a 12v DC 1250 miliamper transformer. I used this to power the 8043 Motorized Excavator. All the 4 motors, which are connected to the 2 v.1 IR Receivers spin noticeably faster and have significantly more power then when they run on 9 volts. I hope this answers your questions. Still, i doubt it is recommend to power the PF system with 12 volts instead of 9. -
Thank you for your reply! So in order to send IR signals from Mindstorms EV3 to Power Functions,i need NXT IRlink Sensor? I had a feeling that the EV3 Infrared Sensor can send signals as well, since it is able to send and receive Infrared light to measure distance (Proximity Mode)

Hello! Recently i discovered that both the Mindstorms EV3 beacon and the PF IR Remote are interchangeable. Here are some explanations: I was very happy to know that the EV3 Retail Kit comes with a Infrared remote(beacon), which can be used as a remote control for your robots. That's pretty handy if you want to build robots that interact with humans. By accident, i found out that the IR Beacon and PF remote are interchangeable for use with both the MS EV3 and PF systems! I tried it, and they both work with the Mindstorms EV3 IR Sensor and the Power Functions IR Receiver! Seems that the IR signals they produce are the same ( escept for the beacon mode button on the Mindstorms remote). The conclusion is that they can both be used to control EV3 and Power Functions models. Some time ago i read that the RCX can be used to SEND IR signals to the PF IR Receiver. That probably takes more knowledge than i currently have. This lead me to the following question: Can the Mindstorms EV3 Sensor can do the same? Is it able to send IR messages to other devices? For example, is it possible for an EV3 robot, using the Infrared Sensor, to send signals to a Power Functions IR Receiver? In this way you can expand the motor limit (4) with an external battery pack and an IR Receiver. I hope someone has information on that matter! (Solved! the EV3 IR sensor cannot be used to send IR signals to PF receivers and such ...) Thank you in advance!

Help with IR
le60head replied to legomania94's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hey! I read somewhere that the newer type of IR receivers have 4 additional channels, that can be unlocked thus enabling the use of 8 in total. I do not mean the v.2 receivers, but a batch that have been produced after a certain date. Unfortunately i do not know more :/ Hope someone else can help you! -
That's a good question. I guess medium or large sized motors are generally more useful. IMHO there hasn't been a real need so far for a small motor in official Technic sets, so that's why. So i guess, that it is just cheaper for TLG to produce lets say a medium or big sized technic set with 1 medium motor instead of multiple. With a gear box all the set's functions can be powered by the same motor. If they had to put a second smaller motor to power some of the functions, that would raise the production costs noticeably. Still, there are sets in the recent past that had a lot of motors: 9398, 8043. So i suppose we have to ask ourselves this: what LEGO set would benefit the most from a small motor, so that TLG actually produce it.

From what i know, a person from Bulgaria has already received his prize copy of the 41999 set. I cannot confirm this 100%, but it seems to me you should've already received it?

Have you noticed that TLG are introducing a new part with the Mindstorms EV3 Education expansion set? Its a rubber inset specially made to fit inside the holes of the plastic track. For more info, please follow the link: http://www.technicbricks.com/2013/05/tbs-techtalk-12-about-track-inserts.html I intend to wait and see if they are what i expect them to be. Maybe you'll want to wait for them too :)

Is my RCX useless now
le60head replied to EyesOnly's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hey mate! Sorry to hear about the difficulties you've had. Could you please put in just a few words what exactly you're trying to achieve? What OS do u want to use, What Communication tower: Serial(com) or USB, and what software? I am running RIS 2.0 on win 7 with USB Tower. From what i remember i just had to look for a patch to make the usb tower work, other than that - no problems. I suppose you could use a Serial Tower with the same success. Just make sure u have a fresh 9v battery!
