Roller coaster idea
le60head replied to Zerobricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Very nice idea! The best one i've personally seen so far at least :) Congratulations Zblj! Do you have any idea on how to mount a chain inbetween the rails to climb the car up? About the parts cost, since the construction is made up of a few very common pieces, i think it would be relatively inexpensive. -
Mindstorms Questions

You're welcome ;) I wouldn't have thought about using a tire to drive chains, so i was surprised to see that too! -
Mindstorms Questions
le60head replied to dandexter's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hey there! I think the answer of your question lies within that picture: If i understand correctly, the friction from the rubber tire is used to drive the "chains" -
VW Roll Golf: Is it possible?
le60head replied to 88high's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Good luck :) I've tried searching for the episode of Scrapheap challenge i had in mind, but i can't find anything. Weird :/ I'm sure i've watched some show that featured a challenge to make a rolling-over atv-s (quad bikes) or smth. I think it was smth like that. If anyone remembers watching that episode, please let me know. I think it's relevant to this topic. P.S. Here's a vid: -
VW Roll Golf: Is it possible?
le60head replied to 88high's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I think there was an episode in Scrapheap challenge where they had to build a rollcage-buggy. I'll try and find it. There were some tips on how to make a car roll-over concerning weight distribution and suspension. Very ambitious project! I'm very curious to see the result! Here are my thought about the rollcage and the weight distribution: (please note, they are only guesses) The reason for the shape of the rollcage of the VW, shown in the video, is is probably made irregular because it needs to be. Maybe its due to the engine being heavy on the front - what dhc6twinotter was talking about. Dino's statement sounds to be true in general - if the COG is in the middle then the rollcage should be circular to make the roll-over easy. But i suppose that since they couldn't change the COG of the VW easily, the decided to make the rollcage flatter on the front and steeper on the back. I think while rolling over, the rollcage is designed to use the weight of the engine to accelerate the roll and aid in completion of the roll. in the video it seems to me that the cars starts to turn faster in the end before finally slamming into the ground. Back to the topic: I doubt the rollcage needs to be irregular, if the centre of gravity is close to the middle of the car. The height of the COG is important too. A top-heavy vehicle would roll over easier during a sudden stop. I think they raised the suspension of the golf for that reason exactly. And finally - as 88high mentioned in the beginning, a shortened wheelbase also aids in making the car less-stable. Hope my line of thought helps :) I might be completely wrong though! Please keep that in mind. Good luck with your project! P.S. Oh yeah, and remember to NOT put a windshield on the car! -
WIP: Radio Controlled model
le60head replied to le60head's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thank you! I get your point about testing first and showing later. Patience is not one of my strong points though :) Building the right half of the vehicle is next in order. I'll test the front end ASAP after connecting the front suspension arms. It is the most challenging part of the build for me, so i hope i didn't underestimate it. I checked the rear, and the RC motor has plenty of torque with the gearing used. I don't expect any surprises there at least. -
WIP: Radio Controlled model
le60head replied to le60head's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hi Sariel! Thanks for the advice. By "single beams", are you referring to this part in my construction: I was hoping it would be able to keep the steering wheels straight under stress. I have not tested it yet though, i'm waiting for some mini-technic turntables to arrive in order to mount the suspension arms first. The same part ( the 5m link with stoppers) is used in the8366 Racers Supersonic model it connects the wheel hubs to the center steering-block "thingy" and it works fine. Did i understand your comment correctly? if you are talking about the connection between the black angular liftarms 4/6 that hold the wheel, and the rest of the construction, they're just put together to show the placement of the front wheel - just for the picture. P.S. how's your progress at playing bass :) -
WIP: Radio Controlled model
le60head replied to le60head's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thank you for your comments! @ VMLN8R: I wasn't aware of that MOC and it's very useful to see someone else's approach. Thanks for the post! @ Kevron: Did furbie had wheels? LOL! As a matter of fact, i did have the idea of putting a stuffed animal as a driver :D I tried renaming the topic, since you guessed what i was building, but i have no rights to. If any moderator finds it necessary, could you please rename it to: WIP: Radio Controlled Batmobile Tumbler Model. Thanks! Here's where i need your ideas: Since the RC module has an auxiliary output for a third motor, i wish to try and benefit from that opportunity. What would your suggestions be for the function of a third motor? I've been thinking about raising / lowering suspension. I am guessing it would make handling worse though. Firing two of these maybe? If i recall correctly, the tumbler had some kind of missile launchers :) I'll be looking forward to your ideas! see ya! -
WIP: Radio Controlled model
le60head replied to le60head's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That was quick! :D LOL! please note, the front wheel is barely attached ( just for the photo actually) i'll mount it on its suspention arm as soon as i receive some parts. -
Hey guys! I've finally started work on a MOC i planned to do for a long long time. I hope i manage to finish it until the end of this month. I've been seeing a lot of people sharing progress on their current work, so I decided to do the same for once :) I'm trying to recreate a particular vehicle and make it drivable. Below are some pics of where i'm currently at. I am by far not the first one to try and make a model ofthis vehicle out of LEGO, but i'm not sure it has been done with the RC Buggy Unit yet. Guess what it's supposed to be! WIP: Guess what I'm building! by le60head, on Flickr I want to thank Zblj for the instructions on his planetary gear-drive mount for big wheels. It worked like a charm, and i do not think this project would've been possible without it. P.S. The model IS missing two wheels. I't supposed to be some sort of a car, not a bike :D Hope you find it interesting! Any are comments welcome!

Technic frustrations
le60head replied to allanp's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
hahahah i like what you guys just said :) I also try not to get frustrated by the parts limitation. From my not-so-vast experience in building, i can conclude that the most realistically-functioning models made out of LEGO don't always work the most efficient. So to me it's about finding the balance between realism and functionality ( and aesthetics of the whole construction of course) -
Lego Technic Figures
le60head replied to BasOne's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Wow! The photo from Dannyboys is SO cool! I love it! I'd definately like to see the technic figures back! I've always loved them for some reason. I guess if i try to explain it, it would be that i like to put a driver in a r-c car for example and such ... I also really like the way their hands, elbows hips, knees and ankles moved. As a kid, i remember playing with them a lot, like i was playing with an action-figure of some sort. I'd be happy to see them return once again. The only think i'd say i'm a little bit disappointed with is that most of their faces are pretty similar. Same goes for the hair-do - mostly black & old brown. Everything else doesn't seem to need any changing, at least to my taste. Great topic! -
Hmm, do you guys think we should make a "headcount" of how many ACTIVE technic builders (MOC-ers) there are around the globe? I think that could be useful information as well as a helping hand in meeting other people with the same interest in each of our contries. Also, why not make a dedicated FB page to help in popularity? I've seen the EB fb page, but it doesn't seem to be very active ( i could be wrong, sorry)

Sariel, i ENVY you XD Great topic! Here's what i can share from my personal experience. I live in Bulgaria, and we've had an organised "LEGO Community" for about 3 years, not more. Out of all the lego fans in it, not more than 10 have any interest in LEGO TECHNIC. The builders are even less. So it seems in most countries there are just a few technic builders. I've also thought about creating an international online community ( lets say, forum-based? ). I'd gladly help out with what i can for creating such a online "place", dedicated to technic builders :)

Custom wheels
le60head replied to rm8's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Great topic! Thank you for the info! I'll keep an eye here for any good findings on replacement tyres. My biggest concern about using non-LEGO produced tyres would be the price. I'm ok with the price of most tyres ordered trough Bricklink. Not sure how much would tyres cost at a Hobby Shop for example? Any info about that please? -
NXT Automated 4-speed Gearbox
le60head replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Great work! Somehow, i'm not surprised you managed to built something working as smooth as that with almost no experience so far :) I can't imagine what you're gonna do in the near future! I'm looking forward to it though! -
Here's a big THANK YOU for this awesome review of the set! I truly enjoyed reading it :)

RC Dune Buggy
le60head replied to dikkie klijn's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks for the info! Great new photos! I love your idea about using ice as a foundation :) Did you use a clutch-wheel for the steering, or did you connect the motor (PF-m i guess) directly to the hockey spring piece? I'm not a fan of the latter, since stalling your motor isn't very healthy for it as far as i know ? -
Pneumatic Idea
le60head replied to mo_'s topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I like your idea. Here are my thoughts on the matter: For the same purpose, couldn't you use an extra pneumatic piston, and connect just one of its outlets to the pneumatic system? ( Kind of like their use in lego pressure regulators) Also, afak you could just use longer than needed pneumatic hoses for the sake of expanding the volume of your pneumatic system. Their internal volume could also work as an "air tank". I haven't tried either of those ideas, but i think they have been used already in some mocs? -
RC Dune Buggy
le60head replied to dikkie klijn's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That's a great buggy! It looks very fun to drive, and it jumps too! Amazing! I simply love it! Could you please share, how long do the twin LiPo batteries last for driving the model? Also what kind of Return-to-center steering did you use ? regards, legohead
