Bootleg Super Heroes minifigs - worth it or not?
Robianco replied to KingPixels's topic in Community
Thanks for the input Raminator... I for one was really interested in those results and hoped that the print was going to hold up... the muscle torso on plain colours is an increasingly sought after thing and being able to reproduce that 'at home' would have been fantastic. The potato comment is just something that I've used for the last 20 years to refer to something that's been printed badly... and something I've heard used by many designers. Just the same as saying something that's been cut out really badly looks like someone cut it with their d**k. ;) Poorly delivered print is inexcusable... yes if someone achieved results like this with a potato people would be amazed but as a machine printed result it's poor. Now... that's not to say that it's definitely down to the quality of the print. The fact that there are ANY relatively sharp lines on those figures tells me that it may just be terrible artwork that has caused those figures. People can achieve very good things with paint but I'm yet to see a painted minifigure I want to buy... for me that's just now how Lego minifigures are supposed to look... regardless of the skills and technique involved in the creation of some of them (and I've seen some absolute rubbish posted on Flickr that have actually had good feedback!) I buy quite a lot from BL and one thing I've noticed is some of the older print from Lego used to be very poor also... but it was down to the design in part... the use of half tone to try and achieve some tone on the print... especially in metallics... and so many of them were out of register. If someone has been able to replicate that at home with any kind of hand printing it would be considered incredible... but as a finished result from a machine or pad printer it's certainly not. Thankfully the creation of bootleg or custom figures is so far past this point that it just serves to highlight how poor these are. If these were the kind of figures this thread was created on it would only have one page instead of 77 and the first reply to 'Bootleg Super Heroes minifigs - worth it or not?' would simply be 'No. They're not'. -

I think the red and black version is Superior Spiderman which was Doc Ock taking over the role for a short while (I know at least a couple of things about Spidey ;) ). The grey/black/silver figure was actually done really well in the earlier SY set: http://www.aliexpres...2045850587.html I've replaced all but that one from the set with Christo or official Lego figures. I just swapped the legs out for genuine Lego versions and it looks great... I'm happy enough with it to not feel like replacing it anyway! Here's Christo's: http://custombrickan...n-P3309979.aspx The Venom in there is actually also a clone of Christo's original Venom figure which differs on the design (both the head and the torso) from the official version... I think Christo's figure was released before the TLG one but I'm not 100% sure about that. Also... the Superior Spiderman was pad printed by Muddy River Minifigs: https://www.flickr.c...08/14829722143/ It's really nice! The SDCC Spiderman in that set is also not the best... but Phoenix Customs are just about to release their version which is far superior to Lego's SDCC figure never mind any bootlegs: https://www.flickr.c...ool-1829564@N22 -

Which one is the armoured Spiderman? I'm not well versed in Spidey variations. Is it the grey and black one or the black and red one? -

Seriously... a member here had a hand stamper made and got better results than those prints... especially on the muscle torso. If you ever wondered why some people have such a low opinion of bootlegs it's these kind of figures. I don't think there's a single torso or head print there that's worth trying to use on a custom figure. This set and the set with Quicksilver might be the worst bootleg figures I've seen. Well they were quick in hitting the shelves! Yeah... I think the images they use are really misleading. The set with Snake Eyes etc posted on the last page show just how bad they are... the Superior Spiderman etc looked half decent on the promo images but if they're anything like the ones shown with SilverSurfer etc then they're a massive no-no. -

That's just the classic Rhino outfit isn't it? Isn't that just how he appears in the game? -

Welcome to EB! I will say one thing though... I seem to remember someone being banned from the site for being too young. This guidelines for the site say that this is an AFOL site so you need to be 18 years old. I'm sure a MOD will comment and act if they feel you don't meet the site requirements.

I'll have to have a chat with a member of staff then and see how it works. Most of the time they match without me having to check but it's worthwhile knowing! :) Good work, Stan!

I got 2 sets through yesterday from AE and the print on all of them is excellent. One of the heads on the ZEA was a little lower than the other and thus wasn't ideal with the mask but I've taken the good one and I'm now using it with the SY ZEA figure so that one is bow boxed off! The print on all the others was good... the silver printing on the Batman Begins is much better than the SY version and I think it's very close in weight of line etc to the original although the original uses grey ink instead of silver. -

I managed to pick one up for a relatively good price with cheap postage... low enough to not attract any further import charges. It's well worth it! -
Big enough though! ;)

Stickers don't bother me at all... they're just something we're going to have to get used to. Once applied properly they're not so bad... I think it's just the possibility of cocking them up that puts people off. This will be taking up most of New Year's day for me! :)

I'd say that the fact they've made an actual size set of the Falcon rather than just a series of rooms in a studio with some external matte painting it's safe to assume it's something that'll be in more than just Episode VII which leads me to thinking they'll be bringing out a new version. Whether they retire the OT system scale version to simply bring out a ST system scale version is matter for debate. We know it has at least one cosmetic difference with the radar 'dish' but nothing really stood out on the clip we've seen that made it look that much different from the ship we know and love... Whether that would mean a new and very large UCS scale version (not necessarily the exact same size as 10179) is the million dollar question. I can also definitely see a refined X-Wing model based on the model JJ Abrams stood next to and the appearance of them with a main protagonist at the helm in the trailer too. Whether they included that as a nod to something familiar rather than some kind of mainstay of the ST only time will tell... but again... the face that they've made physical, life sized models of them tells me they're prominent enough to warrant a plastic brick version.

Welcome! There's a big overlap in how you got into Lego with your interests and how I got back into it. Started with SW and has expanded into SH!

Is there anything to indicate they won't continue them? We've only seen the winter wave and they're still there... we have no idea what's in the summer wave yet...

It's pointless speculating on advert calendars like this especially one that may contain some of the most asked-for figures in the OT. Some of these figures could sell a set on their own so they're not getting added to an advent calendar. We had the protocol droid from the Sandcrawler and someone who was basically Momaw Nadon from the cantina added to a Yoda Chronicles set to help sell it and they were far less enticing than the bounty hunters. Nice idea but we may as well as for a Cloud City calendar set with cloud car pilots and updated figures from 10123... ...and besides... I'm assuming there aren't any rumours about this actually happening?

I've been hoping to find someone that has a definite newer version of the SY Superman and Spiderman sets. The old Bizarro has much squarer shoulders that were more in line with Decool's so I'd like to replace that with a newer rounded SY version. I'd also like to get an updated SY Spidey set for the SDCC version... the old one had the cropped toes and there are updated version with the new Lego leg clones. Unfortunately getting that kind of info out of an AE seller through messages is almost impossible! If anyone knows of a seller that has these variations it'd be greatly appreciated! Looking forward to the SY GOTG set turning up now with the new Lele Military set and the Decool set with ZEA etc. I'll be grabbing the Disen set as soon as they appear too... For some reason I'm thinking the moulds and plastic, as well as the print, will be really good one those... and the accessories looks really good too. I've got each of the three coloured Wargs from TLG but I'm tempted to try the Hobbit set from LOTR to see what they're like. -

I think that Groot is pretty good... especially as he costs about 80p. The print on all of them looks pretty good actually but I'm glad I've got the originals... another Nova officer and Sakaaran are useful though. The Hobbit figures are interesting.. not the actual figures themselves but the Wargs and Thestral type creatures are interesting moulds... more Elves are always nice. Looks like they're definitely looking to move into other themes. -

They both look identical to the Lele versions. I'm wondering if the baseplate is just the only difference with a rebrand for some reason. -

The sidebars as a hilt have been around in SW lore for a little while haven't they? I don't think they'll neccessarily create a new mould for them. -

Well come January there's a whole wave of DC figures coming out for them to copy! ;) I think they'll do some more game designs and with that possibly copies of customisers figures. They may even go into different themes. SY have only just started on LOTR so there's plenty for them to go at. I hope they go for new figures rather than just clone Lego stuff. -
They're also giving away the Han Solo Hoth promo in Feb with any purchase... Wasn't the Electro bag given away by Lego at an event? If so there's a chance we'll get that at some point too... Maybe not with ANY purchase though...
