  1. What a shame, I got to see this last year when it was at Stonebriar in the DFW area. This is what would scare me the most about displaying a MOC openly. If I ever attend a Brickcon or similar show, it would basically require constant supervision. My builds of course would be nowhere near the size of this, which would only lend to the possibility of the entire thing being stolen rather than a portion of it which is what happened here. As others have said, it could not have been easy to do this, and it certainly would have been after hours when hardly a soul would be around to see what was going on. Here is what it looked like prior to the theft US Capitol by Steven Wagner, on Flickr
  2. I think this could be a flagship set in the same way that the Death Star was for Star Wars. It is big and recognizable. Even if it is $400, there certainly is a market for it. I suspect many will save up for it, cash in some bonds, or do whatever it takes to acquire it. For $400, I still would not expect a closed back, unless it was hinged and opened up somehow, but then it would not be as big as it could be. I do not think Goofy would appear here, Cinderella seems more appropriate for an exclusive. After all, the castle is named after her and in WDW, the ever popular Cinderella's Royal Table is there. Her character always appears when they have character breakfasts there.
  3. A lot of people are speculating that the next review could likely not produce an approval as well. Most of those projects are either too big, compete with a current license, or have a degree of redundancy to sets that are already out. I wonder if the review board takes into account the next batch when they make their decision. Having to give two consecutive waves a "no go" would not be very good publicity. Could it be possible that this could be taken into account and improving the chance that they will approve something in this round to avoid that situation?
  4. Besides being a rearrangement of Hoth Attack, it has the same fundamental problem Assault on Hoth has: the snowtroopers are hopelessly outnumbered in each set. This is not a characteristic of the Empire. Too bad he did not invent a snowtrooper battle pack instead. Something like that would help boost the Imperial ranks a bit.
  5. In wave 2, I would like to see: Goofy Sorcerer Mickey Steamboat Willy Mickey Scrooge McDuck Pinocchio Woody I would also like to see Pluto, but he is going to be difficult to make into a minifig. He is too small to be a stand alone minifig, but too large to be an accessory. I am thinking about Scooby Doo as a similar size comparison. They could go down the costumed character route and make him full size and standing up, but he really needs to be on all fours. I am sensing that we might see some Disney sets with Mickey and friends that are not duplo, and that is where we get Pluto.
  6. No way is Lego and Disney going to leave that much money on the table.
  7. Wow! Look on the bright side, at least with the Milly Vanilly project, a sound brick is NOT required As for the Giza plateau, it certainly is eligible since they could in theory use printed bricks to assemble the face. Hope they would not use the dread STAMP
  8. It looks like this will be a popular series. I think the moldings are good and the characters are widely accurate and recognizable. If I could change just one about them, it would be to make the Chesire cat's teeth glow in the dark.
  9. Funny thing is that we are rumored to get a full size Holiday Train this year. The two limited edition sets last year were a miniature holiday train and a gingerbread house. So it is possible that Lego has at least considered the idea of making a minifig scale structure. With that said, I do agree that this seems to have the best chance of being made into a set this round. If there is no problem with the BB-8 using magnets, then this is probably the best chance a Star Wars set has of being produced. BB-8 is extremely popular, and such a set would probably sell very well. Like most others, I have a feeling the magnets are more the issue than even the license this time around.
  10. Went to Lego Store Dallas today. Saw about 5 different adults picking through them. I felt my first pack and could tell by the two daggers attached to the sprue that I had found Peter Pan. He was my primary goal, so it was luck. I was also seeking a Mickey, because a relative collects all things Mickey. Another one of the people heard I was looking for him, and he offered me one that he found since he did not want any further Mickeys. I was very appreciative of that. On the US S@H site, they are already "Sold Out". Considering the heavy activity around this series and the popularity of the characters, I would be shocked if they did not continue making this series. Imagine the sales that the Disney Stores in Anaheim and Orlando as well as stores inside the parks could make from these. If this is it, there will be a lot of anger from people who would have wanted one, and Disney and Lego both would be leaving a lot of money on the table---which is not something either would like to do. Making more is a win-win situation for Disney, Lego, and collectors. Resellers, not so much
  11. Did not receive the invite, probably because more shopping is done online. Space slug would be nice, but I never did plan on spending $150 at this time. When I saw the much anticipated minifigure was a first order stormtrooper, I about dislocated my jaw from yawning. As for the Hoth set, it would be hard to add any more here that has not already been said. An adult priced playset
  12. Don't get me wrong, I really like the Johnny Five and remember the movie well from the 1980's, but I think it resembles Wall-E too much. Had Wall-E not already been produced, I would lay fair odds on Johnny-5, but I think they are too similar. If I am wrong and it does get chosen, then it will be a pleasant surprise.
  13. My guess is that we will see an open back model that is higher than $200--possibly even approaching the Death Star range at $400. Even if it is not at minifigure scale, it has a lot of detail and turrets to cover. Having an open back will allow the model to have the necessary height to give justice to its many towers. If done right, this should be taller than than the ghostbusters HQ, Temple of Airjutzu, or any modular. It might not be quite as tall as Tower of Orthanc, but it should be fairly commanding for a Lego set.
  14. The trend right now is to raise the price and/or decrease the overall size in favor of adding interior detail. For something to now be the size of Town Hall, the structure would now be well north of $200, possibly even going above $300 (see Ghostbusters HQ). Half modulars would help to some degree, however I would think they would be greater than half the cost of a full sized modular. You would also be limited to using them for residential and small business settings. Larger public spaces would not fit into a half modular. Unfortunately, if you want a nice large and detailed modular, it is going to cost you. You either get to pay a lot of money for one set, or you would have to buy multiples until you can recreate the size you want as many have already done.
  15. They are literally going to have to post someone right next to the PAB bins and make sure someone does not fill multiple cups with nothing but sand green parts. I would think those 1x2 plates, 1x4 plates, 1x1 bricks, the curved slopes and the tiles would especially be sought after.
  16. Eurobricks is changing the main language to Korean. I am surprised yet there are not threads about changing from ABS to a new plastic, color changes, discontinuing the 2x4 brick, bringing back Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, every nonlicensed part now available in online PAB, and the re-release of (Green Grocer, UCS Millennium Falcon, Galaxy Explorer, <insert desired long gone set here>
  17. Whenever there is a rumored change of leadership, I think of Exodus 1: 8 "Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph". To put things in a nutshell, things pretty much got worse at that point. I have a lot of photos on Flickr, a lot. I pay for the pro membership because tens of thousands of my photos are on there. Most of what has been uploaded is backed up on DVD somewhere, but still, it is the only place I can easily access the photos I am looking for. My fear would be a dramatic change in fee/membership structure, or I somehow my photo rights somehow change with a new agreement in place.
  18. The Saturn V would make my buy list as well. I was born right after the first moon landing, but can only imagine the memories people have of the launch to the landing to the recovery. Besides being an attractive model, it represents the only time mankind has ever set foot on solid ground outside the Earth. Kids enjoy rockets, and AFOLS would appreciate the significance of the model in addition to the sleek attractive display. The only thing I am unsure about is the number of parts. It looks large, but it Lego is willing to take a chance on a larger set, this could be the one. We plan on taking the kids to Space Center Houston this summer, and I could only imagine how well a Lego Saturn V would sell at a place like that. If this thing was in aerospace museum gift shops worldwide, I would hypothesize that those places alone could carry sales even before you considered the Lego Store and S@H.
  19. I was kind of leaning towards Saturn V due to the historical significance as well as physical appeal to all ages. I figured if the Mars rover could last only a matter of days, then the rocket could be very marketable. How many parts are necessary to build it? Another possible downside issue to it would be stickers. It would either have to be stickers or several printed parts. Lego could do well with this especially if they could sell this at places like the space centers and museums where space exploration is highlighted in addition to the Lego store and online. I also get the potential that Yellow Submarine has. If they can do BBT and Adventure Time, then certainly this could attract at least as much support.
  20. The only thing I really would like to see change is not necessarily with sets as it is with parts. Some parts, especially sand green ones, seem to be way more rare than they have to be. Not only are sets sometimes hoarded for later resale, but so are certain parts. There is no reason why some colors with basic bricks such as 1x1, 1x2, etc. can not be available at least on online PAB, especially colors like sand green, dark orange, earth blue, and other bricks that would appeal to people wanting to build something of their own. Lego seems to be all about creativity. Even the Lego Movie was very suggestive of taking something apart and building something new. If the availability of individual parts was greater, this would help in a big way. Unfortunately, the shrinking availability on online PAB and the limited availability of parts at the Lego store's PAB walls is not helping much. Whenever I try to design something on LDD, I am constantly checking Bricklink to see if (1) the part even exists in that color and (2) how much would it cost to get x number of the parts. I wish it could be just as easy to get a sand green 1x4 as it would be to get a white 1x4. Same amount of plastic, totally different experience in actually trying to get some.
  21. This is a fun MOC and so many details! If I were a Disney executive, I would ask you to display this at the actual ride for a while in exchange for a season pass or something nice.
  22. Impressive.....most impressive.
  23. All finished. I would add that the term "display space" could mean anything from one shelf in one room to a whole bookcase or more of Lego.
  24. Great review for a great set! I bought this back in June and had an enjoyable time building it. This is definitely a very large set. Eventually, I had to take it apart and move it into storage to make room for other sets, but I look forward to the day we get a dedicated "Lego Room" and it can be reassembled.
  25. The absence of the AT-AT is certainly odd. Lego did maintain production of Ecto-1 when they released the Ghostbusters HQ knowing that many people would want the car to go along with the building. Why did they not do the same with the AT-AT? As it stands, the Imperials do not have much of a chance against the Hoth defense. They are outnumbered in the upcoming set. The $25 expansion pack does not help much since you only get one snowtrooper to go along with Han and the Rebel. Silly me thought that the Imperial forces greatly outnumbered the rebels.
