  1. Does anyone have a good example of a MOC inverted modular that could in theory be compatible with the current modulars?
  2. Great rendering of a mafia setting! I like the reference to Corleone himself. Even if it was deep enough, what about the fishes?
  3. Very fun looking build and a nice inclusion to any town. Well done!
  4. It is a very nice facade, and that means the hardest part could already be behind you. No rush to complete it, sometimes it is nice to work on a little at a time.
  5. I hope the rumor is true, because a modular that is far north of $200 will probably not be purchased by me and will allow more money to be saved for vacations. I am not sure I would consider Detectives office or Brick bank to be standalone sets due to the ugly unfinished sides. If displayed alone, they must be displayed with the "good" sides facing you and hopefully the bad sides will be against the wall or something else. If you are trying to build a whole town, you would feel compelled to buy or build something else to place next to the bad side to hide it. Prior to the DO. the modulars had details on all sides, even the back. You could have doors, balconies, dumpsters, patios, windows, etc on the back or sides. Obviously, they were not as attractive as the front sides, but they could hold their own if displaying individually.
  6. ^^Ha ha, I supported it of course and certainly was not expecting to find that! I thought it would either be: Women of Star Wars: Featuring Aunt Beru, Shmi Skywalker, Leia, Padme, and Mon Mothma with vignettes of blue milk, a vaporator, death star prison, senate pod, and death star hologram respectively. or A modular of a section of the SDCC featuring the exclusive minifigs as the "participants"
  7. I think the designer of "Women of NASA" picked this as a submission to Lego Ideas because they knew it has a high chance of success. Some of you are right in asserting that emphasis on women in Lego is at an all time high right now. I will not debate the pros and cons of that here, but I honestly wish I had thought of this design, not to make a political statement, but simply based on the fact that science and women sell really well in Lego. Love it or hate it, the set has a high chance of success. I read an online article where NASA tweeted regarding the Ideas submission and encouraged people to take a look at it. Considering NASA already made an official presence, I fully expect it to pass review. I see nothing in the competition that would beat it, and it does not require a lot of parts. It ticks off all of the boxes. There is only one weakness I see in it that perhaps many people overlook, and that is the emphasis on American women in NASA. As an American myself, perhaps it is ironic to point this out, but why limit an Ideas set to just the accomplishments of American people? We just had a set approved with focuses on the Apollo mission to the moon (Saturn V). Lego is a worldwide company based in Denmark. Surely, women from all over the world have contributed to space, and perhaps a more worldwide distribution of minifigs and accomplishments would be more fitting? Heck, if anyone got left out, I would nominate Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space. Period.
  8. Sally Ride is also the only one I have heard of from the list. Funny thing is that I also thought of Christa McAuliffe before even regarding Sally when I heard about this project. Excluding her makes the set seem incomplete, yet including her could potentially be treading difficult territory. As a designer, it would not feel right to me to profit off of selling something with her namesake on it, especially if her family members were not involved in the profit/licensing. On the other hand, having her in the set would have its merits in the form of educating the younger generation about her being selected as the first teacher to go to space and the Challenger accident. Children would probably be able to relate more to her than the others since her primary job was to teach them. It might in a way even honor her memory in this regard. In my opinion, she definitely would deserve to be in this set, but others might disagree. I agree that the set does seem like a minifigure pack with just enough basic builds to get around the no minifig only rule. Yet, this has a high chance of success because Ideas has a history of space sets selling well in addition to the near instant sellout of Research Institute. This offers a combination of the two, so it would not be surprising in the very least if this got approved.
  9. It could be successful, especially if they continue to introduce new prints and other concepts in new sets. Simply mixing minifig parts around would not work well, so they have to be creative in future sets. I think the wheelchair, baby, and new prints really helped to sell this one.
  10. A dental practice could be somewhat similar in layout to a doctor's practice. You could still have a lobby waiting area, a records room with the receptionist, the room with "the chair" and various tools, and then maybe an x-ray area. You do not need an bedroom for patients, so maybe the upstairs could be the dentist's apartment. Maybe the dentist could be in on the whole cookie speakeasy thing introduced in the DO. Cookies would certainly help the dentist's business Then again, knowing that having a storyline is crucial to the modulars, if they make a dental practice with a candy store as part of the structure, I called it.
  11. I also think if a modular was to be related to the medical field, it would be a private practice rather than to try and cram a basic hospital into the set. A practice would probably include a waiting room, the records room, and the operating room. I doubt they would try to include another business with the set as so many parts would be needed for the interior to just to set up the basics, unless maybe there was a small pharmacy involved. The trend nowadays is to devote to the storyline by focusing on the interior, thus resulting in a smaller exterior and unfinished backsides (this started with the DO). In order for a practice to be basically the same size and part count as the DO and BB, I would postulate that most of the limited space would have to be used for the three basic rooms in addition to a possible doctor's private office and maybe something like an X-ray room and a recovery/bedroom. A vehicle could be possible, but it would come at the expense of the building. For the storyline, they could possible focus on a minifigure having a baby and include that figure. I am sure the baby minifig is coming in future sets, and surely the next modular could be a consideration. The new wheelchair part also sets up for the possibility of a medical theme set, so I agree that the parts are there. If it is not introduced as a modular, a new hospital City set could be in development. Oh, and you know there is going to be some kind of candy jar or some kind of sweet treat either at the receptionist desk or with the doc. With the next modular, I just hope the building looks good on the outside as I rarely look into the interior.
  12. Those are three fantastic builds! It makes me wish I had a plane ticket to France in order to see them (and of course the source of inspiration)
  13. Yes, making the assumption that a fan of castle/historic/fantasy would automatically adopt the Nexo Knight theme is like assuming that someone who appreciates nice Italian restaurants would take an instant liking to Chuck-E-Cheese pizza.
  14. Outstanding detail and some very fun features. It must have taken a long time to plan and design this.
  15. It looks like they either found or replaced the missing capitol dome statue. I saw this last year in Stonebriar Mall in the DFW area. It is definitely worth seeing.
  16. I am also guessing "none of the above" mainly due to the current backlog of approved Ideas sets and limited factory capability. With that said, if something does get through, it does seem like the museum set or Gingerbread house has relatively the best chance.
  17. Wow, the Saturn V! Better start saving now, because it will be expensive, but worth it. We just got back from Washington DC and saw both Air and Space Museums. Just the gift shops in those locations alone could make this profitable. We will buy it on day one even if it means having to have a little debt to pay off. The interest in manned space flight to the moon remains strong and Saturn V will do very well.
  18. I actually supported the Addams Family Mansion knowing full well what its ultimate fate will be. In an alternate universe where it gets approved and made, I will save up and buy it. Hopefully they would announce it ahead of time, because I would need to save up before it permanently disappears from the shelves. I honestly believe it would sell well to a particular market if it were made. Some people have that kind of money and some people are willing to sacrifice and save to get it. It was really a great design and caught my eye. I am also very fond of old houses.
  19. Outstanding! The colors and details on the building work very well.
  20. Definitely a builder's worst nightmare. If I built something as large as that, there would be glue or something reinforcing the structure. If it was hollow, I can see how it could have shattered like it did. My 7 year old once ran into a MOC building of mine, and was fairly torn up. He was running around and acting very hyper when the accident happened. As for this particular incident, I saw the Yahoo article. Of course in the comments, the consensus seems to be that the parent should have been watching the child. Some comments also alluded to the fact that it was not really "broken" since the elements themselves could be reused. While that may true, I could not imagine how long it would take to try and reconstruct the model.
  21. If you are exclusively a Star Wars fan, I can see some of the disappointment. Of course, the upcoming Death Star might make up for it. There are still some bright spots like the Droid Escape with the droids and two cheap jawas. Creator has been good with the Brick Bank, the Lakeside Lodge, and the upcoming Big Ben looks good. Disney minifigures have been very well received as most of us predicted. I think there is something out there for everyone. With more sets to be released, you never know when that "must have" set is going to appear.
  22. I would imagine that most would be rejected unanimously by the review board in short order (think about round one of American Idol auditions). They would probably then narrow the field down to what they feel are the likely contenders and proceed in normal fashion. The video announcing the results would likely not showcase all of the projects in review. I would expect a comment to the effect of "We have many worthy projects in this round" and maybe a quick slideshow of some of them while they are discussing it.
  23. In that case, I expect Goofy, Sauron from Lord of the Rings, Velma without glasses, and either old Luke Skywalker or Finn in bloody stormtrooper armor.
  24. Looks like I just found my Christmas build! The Peter Pan minifig will go nicely with this.......
  25. I think they should do more production runs of Series 1 before even considering a second series. Right now, there are obviously more people who want to purchase a Disney minifig than there are minifigs available right now. Count me in with the crowd that is not done completing the search for certain minifigs. Finding a store that has them around here is dicey at the moment. If you run Series 2 too soon before Series 1 had adequate time and availability, it could negatively impact sales of Series 2. Would people wnat a Pluto, Goofy, Woody, Sleeping Beauty, etc. without having a chance to get Mickey, Buzz, Malifiecent, etc? Obviously the demand is there for Series 1, and not just with the resellers and others trying to corner the market. This series deserves to have a larger production run and extended availability on the shelves than other minifigure series.
