[REVIEW] 42010 - Off-road Racer
yohai71 replied to yohai71's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks... Thanks a lot, I hope more reviews are on the way... -
Hello all, As with my previous 42001 Mini Off-Roader review, I'd like to post this one with more photos (plus video) and less word or dry data. Let me just add that 42010 is part of a recent crop of kits from Lego which utilize a "pull back and release" mechanism. Lego markets these in pairs, so rather than having a 2 in 1 kit, you buy two kits and make a third model of them... makes you spend more money, eh? So 42010 which I'll review here, goes along with 42011 Race Car: ...to create this Top Fuel dragster: Another pair of kits is 42026 Black Champion Racer: ...and 42027 Desert Racer (see this nice review written by Freeysch): They are meant to create this Racing Truck: Ok, lets start. The box: On the back you'll see that dragster you can build together with 42011- Lego sure manage to insert that picture anywhere in the kit- lest you forget to tell your parents: "I NEED another kit!"...: Open the box and out slide...: ...all the parts, which at first glance and while in their bags, don't look like much at all: As you can see there are two manuals, see some complementary pictures of. The first manual: That dragster again...: and the parts-list: The second manual basically only shows you what you can do with these kits: Lest you forget, there are other Technic kits: Of course, it wouldn't be complete without yet another photo of the dragster: Here's a photo of interesting parts (to me, at least). I really like those winglet-type parts, like the orange ones on the Mini Off-Roader. They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes here: Ok, lets start with the build. Some photos as I go along: Starting to look like a car: The "body" about to be attached to the chassis: All done: Some leftovers (I don't know why they added the cog and the spiral rod in the first place): See it from all angles: It's interesting to compare it with the Mini Off-Roader: I managed to get a minifig into the Mini Off-Roader last time, but he has no hope here...: 42010 is just too big for him! Yet he manages to grab a hold of the steering wheel: The whole thing took me about 30 minutes, and I was taking photos while building it. I really enjoyed the process- I think Technic models are masters in making you feel like you're engineering something far more complex than what they really are. But that's the whole thing with Lego- how you feel while building it. Now for the video: That is basically it, I hope you enjoyed this review.

This is really a great MOC, and could easily pass as a Lego original... respect! The only thing I would suggest is to raise the chimney higher, it's way too low now- Lars gets all the smoke in his lungs...

In a word: WOW.

Hello all. Usually I hover around the Town and Trains' forum, but recently I got my hands on some Technic models, which I thought I might share here. I would like this to be less technical and more down-to-earth; after all, when you open the box, most of us are not interested in dry data, but want to start building right away (at least I do)... All the specs are readily available on the internet, so excuse me if I don't bother with that. Also, personally I'd prefer more pictures over words, so that's what I tried to do here. Oh, and you get a video at the end as a bonus. So lets start (hands in pictures are mine, use them for scale...). Obviously, the box is small- it's a MINI off-roader, yes? Open the box and out slide two bags (un-numbered), and the tires...: ... and two manuals- one is for the chassis, the other for the (alternating) bodies: Contents of bag 1- hang on, what's that white envelope doing there? This one! Ah, rubbers... I'll get to those later: Contents of bag two- I really like those Orange sort-of shark-fins parts: A few pages from the instruction manuals for your pleasure: the building process- remember the rubbers? All done: Chassis is done: See how it works: Halfway through the body build: Almost done: Done! The above and below photos are to show you how the body detaches form the chassis, so you can dismantle it and build the B model (see the manual): Did anyone here ever win this?... See the leftovers: And now for some publicity photos: Here's a nice comparison with a LEGO city model- the Fireman Motorcyclist: Interesting- it's almost up to scale with the Off-roader- see? Now for the video (why can't I embed the video into the post as I did with the photos? oh well): And this is the real-life counterpart, the "Norwegian Jeep" I was talking about in the video: Well, that's it. If you've reached here and saw the video, you'll know what I think of this model... Thanks, I hope you liked the review.

Thanks for the review, which I think is very well balanced. Yes, it's a pretty straight-forward kit but on the other hand, it's different because it covers a theme that Lego-City hasn't covered before. If any, I think its main problem is that you can't really combine it with other city builds- its place is in a forest, and those are hard to come by in cities... but you can start a new theme all-together (perhaps that's what Lego are planning- a new "Forest" series, like the "Mining" we had before) Actually, I like it because of the colors, the small details (chainsaw, roof-guard etc.) and the idea itself. Of the 2014 kits, it's "on my list" along with 60048 "Police Dog Unit" (I think the Hot-Rod's to die-for...)

Amazing doesn't even begin to describe this build. All the people who were involved in this, should feel very proud of themselves.

I think you're doing quite alright on your own... This is simply MEGA!

Thanks for your great review. I also think the SUVs wheels are way to big for its size... The 4435s wheels are indeed best. On that note, i've recently come to believe it's not a Discovery at all- someone at Lego must have seen or known about the forgotten Matra Rancho: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8b/Talbot_Matra_Rancho.jpg I mean, the front end is almost identical! The rest is not far off either.

This looks great. I really like what you did with the grass, i.e. It's not flat as most other city layouts. Good job!

Great MOD, as usual it's all about the small details- note the "tip glass" on top of the piano. Nice work!

That's just about the most realistic Bahn I've ever seen someone make out of Lego bricks... Great job! Also, that red Siemens ES 64U is equally stunning, compered to the real one I photographed while visiting Wien: Now, to your next project...:

What a fantastic MOC, it's like a Ge-zillion parts' puzzle that once constructed, you'll never want to tear it apart. Great job!

I'm constantly amazed by the MOCers here on Eurobricks, how you always seem to be impressive and original. This is really a great MOC. There are so many great details here, some were mentioned in the posts above me- but my personal favorite are the cobwebs under the roof. I like it because I thought it would be hilarious if a Lego spider would crawl on your fingers while you lifted the roof up... Sort of pushing the boundaries- out of the diorama and into the real world. Yes, I've gone into a philosophical mode...

A great MOC. The only thing that's bothering me is that (in my opinion) the red color seems to take hold too much- especially on the race truck- too monochromatic. I think it's missing some stickers. have a look at this: Yes, I know it's not the same but you get my point. Another way to go is to maybe add some small (black?) service doors on the side of the truck, to "break" the overbearing red. It's still a great MOC, mind.

This is really great. The more I look at the photos, more details come to light. I like that cozy bedroom with "his & hers" personal lamps... and the bed-cover. As for Zappa, remember; don't eat the yellow snow...

+1 Exactly what I wanted to say. There's a great difference between Amazon themselves and their third-party sellers.
-
As some of the posts above me said, this MOC makes you want to go there... Great work. I also love the horns at the top of the cabin, nice touch.

This is amazing. I wish I had that space...

Just saw this thread - really great MOC. I also like that sign, although it reminds me of a certain feel-good plant! ;-)
