hah... I'm still an amatuer at GBC - although I did participate in a medium-sized layout at Melbourne's Brickvention in January! I still have some ideas for a few original GBC modules - nothing of the scale of Akiyuki! I'll most likely be building mine rainbow-style... although I think I have a fair chunk of the 'structure' parts in black.. so it might ultimately be that colour RB

Not sure if I will regret this (mainly the time and size involved)... ..but I have 99% of parts needed (not in correct colours)... .....and I just placed an order for the remaining few - 20 buckets, and 50 extra track-links... not 100% sure I will go through with it yet... but will find time to watch all the videos in the next few weeks, and maybe start getting all the parts sorted... what have I gotten myself into!!?! :D RB

Serious piracy problem and its consequences

ok.. that's a lot more reasonable.. :) bit annoyed I missed out on the humble bundle deal - out of interest, do you make any money off it? or is it all to charity? RB -

Maybe delay the ebook version by a year or so? I bought your first book (physical), but I haven't bought any more (yours, or other nostarch ones) - mainly due to shipping costs... I wish they could be cheaper - compared to places like abebooks/etc shipping to Australia is often half the value of the book itself! RB -
There's quite a few things in the movie that aren't really to scale, with other parts, and I'm sure there's plenty of 'illegal' connections.. as well as many that would be very weak in real life - the things you can get away with, in a computer-generated movie! :) There biggest official turntables are Studless: http://rebrickable.com/parts/50163 and Previous version in Studded: http://rebrickable.com/parts/2855 (note this is just the top piece) RB

Missing Cover for RC Unit
RohanBeckett replied to DickesC's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I have one worse.. I picked up a couple of Hot Flame's, with no controllers! fortunately, I already have 2 other RC cars.. so it was worth it for the controller + motors :) -
While honeymooning in New Zealand, a few years ago, we stopped by this huge old transport/toy/collectable museum.. http://www.wanakatra...dtoymuseum.com/ There was a bunch of old lego sets, and a few ex-promotional dioramas... including this mechanical Technic Guitar player Always been meaning to post it up, but always forgot! Not 100% Lego, as it has some metal connecting rods - presumably so he could play for many years, without worry of plastic wearing out. Press the button, and he plays for a little bit! The place was amazing, but not everything was in spotless condition - large sheds/hangars had a lot of dust over items.. even those in glass display cases

Scaler tool updated
RohanBeckett replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
An idea: often when building Moc's.. (particularly cars) we start with a known Lego object: eg: certain wheel. What would be great, would be to be able to simply draw a circle around a wheel on the blueprint, and then say 'make this 86652c01' It could then scale everything else, automatically, with no guessing. Wheels are a common thing to have (and your wheels.sariel.pl database already has them all in there!), but other common components could be useful (panels, etc) RB -
I prefer a bunch of hi-res, well photographed, well lit stills. Especially when it comes to introducing new parts! gimme those lovely macro shots! I can't STAND watching hand-held-shakycam videos, in a dimly-lit bedroom, where the person attempts to hold the camera AND operate the model/remote control, at the same time!! Quickest way to make me close the video, is to do this. And like others have said.. Sariels are among the best.. good lighting.. nifty angles.. and plenty of text/slides within the video describing various functions Not a fan of the thrash metal music he uses occasionally.. but hey.. they can't all be perfect! and I can always use my mute button! I do feel like I know my way around a small Polish apartment VERY well, though!! RB

2.28 m tall Crawler Crane
RohanBeckett replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Can you work out what the 'scale weight' of the objects you were trying to lift, were? ie: was the tub of butter equivalent to 200 tonnes? :) -
well, I'm probably on the right track.. started my boy on PF + gears soon after he turned 3! he's slowly getting the hang of gear trains, and geometries between them... being obsessed with fans/windmills/turbines, means that's a common building theme in our house.. although at this age, still hasn't quite mastered building *strong* things.. and gets frustrated when they fall apart... Luckily Dad is always happy to help out!

I've seen these in some of the primary schools I work in... huge axles.. huge gear... not compatible with regular stuff. and you're at least 14 years too late! http://www.bricklink...em.asp?S=9654-1 My nearly-4yr old son (although happily plays with system lego, and my technic stuff), always enjoys it when we borrow some Toolo Duplo from the local Toy Library It's like Duplo on steroids.. and the ability to bolt bricks together, means you end up with SUPER strong constructions http://www.bricklink...tString=167.296 browsing through the toolo educational list: look at this cool unit! http://www.bricklink....asp?S=RC9203-1 wonder how it compares with PF stuff (considering it came out 2 years after PF was released) and it got pretty advanced with sets like this: http://www.bricklink...em.asp?S=2916-1 modular, 'programmable' duplo, with onboard LCD display! Duplo NXT! I do note, that stuff like this was probably designed at the time when Lego was burning through money!! RB

Here's one I did a few years ago: 8455 Backhoe - Was filmed on an old Apple EyeSight Camera (firewire!) on my PC I really admire the time and effort some people put into building on a pristine white surface, and snapshot every little piece moving! I've done a few new ones too - playing with a new webcam, while building in front of my pc - a couple of the recent motorbikes.. should really youtube them too! RB

Brisbane Moc meetings
RohanBeckett replied to Doc_Brown's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Australia here.. but down in Melb.. I guess it's only 1700km's away.. I'll throw the technic in the car, and drive over... only about 19 hours or so :) -
BIG grin at the 'Concerned Purist' fig... esp in the biohazard suit! Personally, I remember loving the small 9V battery box... especially after growing up with the old 4.5v 3xC Cell Battery rods! they were huge! I've only got one of the PF AAA boxes, and it's a very nice size.. ..can't afford/justify the ~AUD$100 for the LiPo one :( Quite open the idea of hacking a cheap PF AAA box, and stuffing some Heli batteries in there - they are very cheap!

you need something to poke into the rubber seal around the fridge door, to crack the pressure seal.. then the door should be able to open much easier, with less force required (I open our fridge/freezer like this all the time, with my finger!)

8420 Street Bike
RohanBeckett replied to therealjustin's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm glad I got this set before the prices went through the roof on ebay.. funny.. I'm not a huge motorbike fan, but somehow, throughout my collecting, the last decade, I've managed to get nearly every Technic motorcycle! Incl. 2 copies of the butt-ugly 8417 mag wheel master (good rims, though!) 8420 is by far the best looking one, IMHO.. and decent mechanics in it too... I'd say even better than 2010's 8051? RB -
buggy 8475 weight
RohanBeckett replied to piterx's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Just put mine on the scales - 789 grams, with 6 x Alkaline AA Batteries I'm sure the RC Unit + Motors could take a lot more weight Go have a look at some Sariel's creations... I'm sure he's built quite a few vehicles heavier than that, using the RC unit RB -
8480 Shuttle 8455 Backhoe 8448 Super Street Sensation 8880 SuperCar 8868 Airtech B Model 9396 Helicopter B Model I used to have all my models built.. but then started a family.. and needed shelf space for other things.. Now that little boy is slowly finishing up with Duplo, I might build up some more... he's very much into Motors.. so loves anything motorised I build!
