  1. yes.. have read a lot of articles about the fun and games around 2004... pretty much what I was alluding to. That said.. I follow http://www.newelementary.com/ blog.. and it's a bit interesting how many new colours have been coming out lately.. esp with the Friends/Elves series... I almost wonder if they are heading back down this path... albeit a bit more selectively (ensuring that the sets in question DO sell like hotcakes)
  2. It's pretty obvious when you look at this: when they designed the Ferrari F1.. I bet the Designers said 'we neeeeed this piece in red' and promised they'd use it in future sets..... but they don't.. so the next year, they have a excess amount of them... the Dump Truck comes along, and needs 4 of them.. (and I bet they are in a non-visible place), so they all get used up in that set. Lego rarely make new parts, or even same parts in new colours, unless it can be justified useful across many product lines..
  3. Wedo is really childrens beginners programming... it's designed for lower-primary aged kids.. giving them a start in basic cause-effect style actions https://education.lego.com/en-au/preschool-and-school/lower-primary/7plus-education-wedo
  4. I will be attempting a similar mod later this year.. I too have the carousel.. and after displaying it at Brickvention last year, and having it run for nearly 2 days solid.. the tyre is rather... shredded! I got mine 2ndhand, and as a result, I don't have the original baseplate, so I built mine on 9 x 16x16green plates... this will allow me to raise it up, and feed some drive mechanism from underneath (something you can't do on a 48x48baseplate!.. I hope to built it up on a 'box', which will also help to dampen the motor noise too The surging will probably be due to small amounts of friction, or unevenness, that you naturally get, when trying to drive such a large thing from a single axle. Try to keep axles as short as possible, so they have less chance to flex. And go over ALL those support wheels/upper frame... I found mine would get out of whack every few hours or so. Also.. worm gears (all gears, really)... need to be very well braced.. any place that an axle, or a beam/liftarm can flex.. you need to stop it.. reinforce it... It really is a pretty model, but FAR from strong, and structurally sound! ...and is the musical tune burned into your head yet? - I often catch myself humming/whistling it!!!
  5. I've seen a friend on facebook make one, using the barrels.. since the ball sits higher, it took a bit of arm movement underneath to get it to pass the balls reliably... but it did work! I was thinking of making this module.. but haven't decided whether to buy the reflectors, or try another part.. I have quite a few of the 30151b's.. so I might try that
  6. Not sure if it's just me, the nostalgia, or something else?....... but these MASK toys are STILL cool! pretty certain my 5 yr old son would love playing with these! RB
  7. heh.. figured it was MASK, when I saw the first post.. although I'll admit, it has a bit of 'Mad Max' feel to it.. esp the names 'Bandit' and 'Enforcer I loved that show when I was a kid.. pretty sure I recreated most of the vehicles (transforming of course), out of Lego :D
  8. FYI.. although I haven't built my ball factory yet, I bought these beads from China last year, and you can see the size difference They worked great in a couple of modules I build (conveyor belt + hailfire wheels), but those modules aren't overly size/weight sensitive 100 cost me AUD$5 - found the exact listing: http://www.ebay.com....=item3f1a962875
  9. Interesting question There have been other topics relating to lousy design and mechanics of various sets.. ..but ugly? Well.. not counting Universal sets, as some of those models were pretty weird... but for regular sets, I'd say: 8417 Mag Wheel Master is the ugliest Technic motorcycle... 8253 Fire Helicopter is pretty bad 8434 is one of my least favourite sets, but it's B model is one of the few I've never build.. I flicked through the instructions, and thought 'this is bad, and with zero functionality' When you can't even beat Technic's first 2 choppers (852 and 8844) 25 years later.... To be honest, I've skimmed through the last 10 years' technic models on brickset, and can't really see any majorly ugly models.. most of the recent ones are really quite good RB
  10. interesting that the set came out in '77, and the movie came out in '87 is it a small poster, or the back of a magazine?
  11. Yes.. I am slowly finishing some.. (I have about 3-4 complete ones) - And I have 218 days left until 'Brickvention 2016' in Melbourne :) CaptainOwie above, did a great job of organising a bunch of us for the 2015 one, in Jan... and I think most of us are looking forward to making one even bigger and better!
  12. Love watching all of these... but I hate it, as it gives me more ideas, and I already have too many modules in half built states! :D A lot of very nice, simple modules there too RB
  13. Oh.. poor thing.. it's 500km away... ....only 16,300km's away for me! ;) what I wouldn't give for even a single official lego shop in our country, with a pick-a-brick wall! oh well.. have to be content with Bricklink... and +1 to pretty much everything Erik said.... unless you have a LOT of money, and you CAN buy 10 decent sets at once! Also.. once you start getting into building your own things.. invest in some decent storage/sorting systems
  14. ahh.. in that case, it should be easy enough to motorise :) Just remember to brace the gears well, so they don't slip! A worm drive gear should make it slow, and strong
  15. you can... but not sure if it's worth it.. it's very stiff to turn, and would require a bit of power, and gearing.. and ultimately, it's not a very long conveyor belt, and is no good for gaining height - the balls slip off too easily. much easier to build one from regular tracks, and be able to get balls higher, and with less effort.
  16. While waiting for the last BrickLink order for the BallFactory to come in (picked up the baseboards on the weekend!) I decided to build the 'Catch and Release' module This was a fun build - easy to figure out, just from the video... uses pretty common parts, and is mesmerising to watch! It's a good module that can happily cope with a large influx of balls, and not jam up, too!
  17. Just a note to this - look at the pin-end of the connector - it's not round You will not get any lego piece that I know of, down there (eg: standard rod/antenna) - which is why I used a paperclip - thin, long, and strong
  18. great work, though! do you just have it geared down in 'slow mode', like TheRebricker does, while in testing? or are there some sources of friction in there? it looks like you've managed to get everything in sync And now we know what it looks like in Red!! RB
  19. definitely got that country-town feel... it's like a storefront I'd see in any rural victorian town! :)
  20. very original! reminds me of those ferret ball things you see in markets!
  21. haha.. on the left hand side - spot all the purchases of '20' that'll be a GOOD estimate of all the people building Akiyuki's Ballfactory! :D I counted around 35 orders of 20, since Jan - when TheRebricker started creating video instructions.. The Used lot of 20, in April, was probably mine. that said, despite choosing used barrels... they are in pristine condition!
  22. I was wondering the same with other parts.. I had a couple of orders ready to go with 3 BL sellers.. (picked via the Brickficiency program) I delayed my order By the time I placed the order, one of them was out of one of the parts - 2x2 regular brick in DBG - a core part of Akiyuki's Ballfactory ;) Of course, it could have just been bad luck that someone else decided to order from that seller, for some other MOC RB
  23. /notices he has 30 of these in his inventory... ....hmm.. do I really need them? ;) RB
  24. and really.. does everything have be 100% pure to each line? I consider them a 50/50 crossover Technic/Racers vs the Racers sets that were built from 99% system bricks. and yes.. they are a heck of a lot of fun! I'm fortunate enough to have 3 of them, and when nephews are over, we often race them around outside.. They aren't as robust as the later Racers RC vehicles (eg: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?S=8675-1 which started getting quite distant from Lego) - as the front wheel brackets do fall off a lot, when they are driven/crashed into edges
  25. ok.. now THAT one, you'll definitely need a pointy pin to 'dig into' the 2l red axles, to drag them out! :)
