[GBC] Cardan Lift
RohanBeckett replied to torso's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks, Torso, and djm for putting the effort into creating the digital files... I had planned on allocating a weekend to reverse engineering it, from the video... but of course, this will be much easier! Yet another GBC to drain my supply of 40t gears! ;) RB -
Which set should I buy?
RohanBeckett replied to kb7's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I bought a 2ndhand 42006 earlier this year, and finally got around to building it with my son. it's an excellent build I have to say - it's bigger than what I expected! -
Weird Suspension Idea
RohanBeckett replied to Rishab N's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I used to make shockers with rubber bands... probably got the idea from some old Ideas book. I think 8090 got me my first real set of shock absorbers - although it was be a couple of decades later before I finally got the Car Chassis, and it's wheels. -

congratulations! you just discovered what Lego did with the 8860 Car Chassis prototype - as shown on the box! :) I'm not sure this set ever shipped as per the box image - I have a feeling they just hadn't finalized the shock absorbers in time for the box printing. -

the Ball Factory? a slight squirt of silicon spray can help out a LOT with rubbing/spinning parts, and not cause any damage to lego parts.- 1,124 replies

I beg to differ... it comes and goes over the years.. some of the sets of days gone past have *awesome* B models... 8880..... and the 8480 Shuttle, for example, with the B model of Nuclear sub, complete with opening hatch, and 'drivable' RV that comes out the front (powered by the micromotor) and even recent sets - although I don't own it.. 8053 crane has a pretty good B model Harbour crane that a lot of people seemed to enjoy I have a feeling that often flagships have lacklustre B's, since they put SO much effort into the main model, ensuring it's as good as can be, they simply don't have the time/resources to make a decent B. Other, lesser sets are surprising what they can do with the same parts. I'm always impressed when a B model uses more than 95% of the parts! (same in the Creator series too!)

GBC General Discussion

Yes.. I think the function of the robot pushing the button itself adds a lot to this build. - it almost gives it a human element... I'm not a huge fan of NXT-based GBC's - since I do prefer a good 'ol' mechanical solution - but every so often, you see one that uses the programmable side (especially the fast and accurate servos) REALLY well.- 1,124 replies

I built that module with 3l thin liftarms instead... (as seen in other peoples' designs) it has 3 advantages - doesn't rely on friction of the rubber..won't leave fragments of rubber on the balls, nor dirty them And balls don't get stuck in them, like I see so often with people who've made this spiral lift with tires.. Spacing at the rear works well - a single shaft with worm gears, and then 16t gears running off it. Added advantage, now that I've built a feed hopper - the bottom liftarm acts as a 'stirrer', preventing balls getting jammed, and allowing it to handle a large pile of balls at the bottom

Not sure about the home software, but the Educational side usually has a seperate Data Logging feature... designed to use the NXT to take measurements over a long period (light patterns, temperature, moisture, etc)

[GBC] Cardan Lift

+1 to this.. I have all the parts, and will be dedicating some time to studying, and freeze framing the video a lot... it's a mesmerizing mechanism!! -
Akiyuki's Cup-to-Cup GBC
RohanBeckett replied to djm's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Will be building this as soon as my silver reflectors arrive from Russia! :) I have finally amassed enough 40t gears for this, and other contraptions that I'm building Looking forward to any digital instructions that you create! I always like these 'extendable' modules that you can effectively create as long as you like... always good to get a bit of 'rise' in GBC modules, so other gravity-fed ones get a good run. -
I remember building these, from the old 8889 Technic Ideas book (http://bricks.argz.com/instructions/8889-1) It actually worked pretty well... I used to scale it up a bit, and use larger wheels, and with a decent bit of wind.. they'd go pretty fast! I imagine building it with studless these days, would be even lighter and faster...

the wheels are the same as used in the RC Racers cars of that era, too.. I have a stack of them (along with this set) This was the 2nd set I bought, after coming out of dark ages.. (I got 8436 truck for my birthday that year) I ended up buying 8435+8436 together off someone on ebay for AU$100 (so I have 2 copies of the truck!) Can't say I've had them built all that many times over the years.. but they were great parts packs! a good start to my studless collection Compare this era of studless sets, vs recent years, and you'll see quite an evolution in building techniques. Back then, there were still a lot of parts used from the studded era (even-spacing, 4-wide diffs/universal joints) This resulted in a few odd ways of building Now that everything has evolved to 'odd' parts (3 wide diffs/joints), things are a lot simpler

[MOC] Bell 47 Helicopter

Very good! you might want to adopt the 9396's 'ratchet' mechanism, with the main drive motor.. so that when you turn the power off, the blades gradually slow down, and don't come to an abrupt stop! RB- 23 replies

I put 2 airtanks in place of the fake ones, and I recall it made it a lot more playable... just being able to use more functions, one after the other, without having to wait for the pressure to build back up again. Also old valve/pump/cylinder parts could be a bit leaky these days, compare to brand new... -

glad you gave it a good dust.. did you pull apart, wash, and rebuild? it's a great build. Also.. make sure you build (and tweak) the B-Model.. it's a great mechanism! -
[TC5] Ornithopter
RohanBeckett replied to Baelyrn's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I had a little play, and was able to attach the wings to the arms.. but not put the whole arm in the body... it's all about the order that you connect parts together, and using the hinge mode, to angle things, before aligning and connecting them.. will have a better go later on, and post it back (unless someone beats me!) I only just got this jet a little while ago - and it's due for pulling apart.. so I might try building this soon! :) great job anyway!
