  1. I know it's called a "16 tooth gear with Clutch", in Bricklink... but every time you say Clutch Gear, I can only think of this one:
  2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Document_Format Developed by Adobe Systems Initial release June 15, 1993; 23 years ago I think PDF will be fine... we've made it this far, and it's still perfectly readable :) interestingly.. it's older than jpg format, which first arrived in 1994! .gif arrived in 1987.. and png 'only' 19 years ago...
  3. lighting... lighting... lighting... can make all the difference in the world - even if using a 3 year old iphone... outdoor, diffused (overcast), sunlight can be a cheap way of doing this
  4. someone made one out of the arocs, I think.. will see if I can find the video... to be honest - you'll never be able to make great things unless you start mixing your lego up.. the sooner you let all the 'atoms' mix.. the sooner you'll create amazing things! :)
  5. the Bucket Wheel Excavator is my first 'really thick' booklet, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked, while building - the spine binding is quite strong, although the pages are very thin - had to tell my 6yr old to be a bit more gentle turning pages, as he tends to pull them from the bottom/middle.. and we had a couple of minor tears I dislike those plastic binder pages.. booklets always just flop about in them...
  6. Not sure how you can tell the Baby is a boy! ;) and also - anyone notice the 4-9 on the cyborg torso - a slight reference to 'seven of nine' - Borg character from Star Trek: Voyager
  7. Yes.. I've had a BWE just arrive today! and although I'll enjoy building it - it's primarily a parts pack.. SO many 5x7 frames! as for GBC stuff: Motors PF switches/extension cables / old 9V train controllers Clutch Gears 40t gears regular bricks/plates/tiles (lots of tiles!) tracks/treads/chains And of course, the 'usual' parts, of beams/liftarms/gears/pins/bushes... I have 4 buckets of wheels/tyres that I never use, as well as things like Linear Actuators that are rarely used in GBC's It takes a while, but it's nice eventually building up a collection, where you can easily build anything you want, with minimal extra ordering
  8. I don't think anyone can say what parts you should order... it's more of a case of 'what do you want to build now, or in the future' I build Great Ball Contraptions as such, I have a few wanted lists in Bricklink that are filled with all sorts of interesting parts that I want, in order to build some of the amazing GBC designs I see out there. There are plenty of 'perpetual buy' parts (eg: 40t gears are always useful), so if I happen to be browsing a BL store, and they have a couple, I'll always add them into an order. every so often I'll just have a fun browse around a few large BL stores, and see what they have... and then other times.. I have a project that I wanted to get started on.. so it'll be more of a deliberate shop - I NEED this, this and this parts...
  9. Even as a native english (Australian) speaker.. I generally prefer videos without speaking - with similar reasons for Sariel... I'm often in a room with others, and its easier to just put the sound on mute, and watch informative videos.. you only have to look at the example videos by Oracid - http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=139522 to see how much can be demonstrated with no speaking at all! :) and at least with captioned videos - or slides.. I can pause and read the text.. and look at the pictures too!
  10. I thought I had one of those label writer machines at work... but when I went and checked, I found it was a Dymo LabelWriter Turbo330 Still a good unit, but the software can't read your label files :( not sure whether I will just bite the bullet, and buy a Brother.... or just tediously print out on paper, and cut/stick on my drawers...
  11. funny.. when you think about it, and look back... its interesting that they designed it this way... the cost of designing and producing this distribution block would have far outweighed the cost of just running a 2nd host to the top of every cylinder...
  12. need to find a good technique to replace the hose connector (nipple) on some of my cylinders - that's the most common fault I have with mine - about 2-3 broken ones...
  13. considering (my best guess) that 90% of bricklink stores don't make a profit - selling *real bricks* (most are just to support the hobby/addiction)... what chance does anyone have to make any form of decent *profit* from instructions...
  14. The hubs are good.. but ultimately, probably have too much friction to be used in a PF-powered driveable car.. it was a shame they weren't used much, in the era they came out...
  15. No.. they are different Speed controller was originally designed for trains, it has 7 different speed settings, but it's hard to make it go 'instant full power' when used with the servo unit, it gives you incremental control, but you lose the return-to-centre feature, while using the dial on the remote it has the ability to send a signal, and have it 'stick' to the iR controller, and not need constant line of sight. it also has the red 'instant off' button - designed to quickly prevent train crashes the original 8885 is simply on/off full power both have pros and cons... always handy to have at least one of each, and discover for yourself which is suitable for your project :)
  16. and that it is - definitely! I only pulled mine apart a few months ago after being on the shelf for 5 years, as I neeeeeded more long black beams.. I hope to build the F1/Indycar B model soon.. it's meant to be pretty good...
  17. if you're making it right hand drive.. make the necessary changes NOW Both front and rear diffs will need to be reversed, as if you don't, the large side of the front diff will foul the steering gears, when you attempt to mount it right hand drive if you don't do it now, you WILL need to pull the whole frame apart - and that's hard enough for us able-handed people!!! (extremely rigid construction!)
  18. After last weekends BrickExpo, and running 18 various PF Motors, for 3 days solid (at least 7 hours continuous running per day), I now have 2 M motors that are starting to whine/squeal (they still work, though...) But they are probably my oldest, since my first 2007 Bulldozer set, and have done numerous exhibitions
  19. Our small 20-something module layout at BrickExpo Canberra (Australia), over the weekend Myself, CaptainOwie, and Rasikaa all contributing modules 3 days of exhibiting... (and with me driving 700km's with a car full of plastic!!) Lots of fun - lots of interest from the public, and we apparently lost out by 3-4 votes for public choice award (lost to a huge Frozen Mountain/castle!)
  20. I rebuild my ZigZag lifter, as per the instructions here... and.. after a small modification, it ran at 95% success, for 3 full days at Brickexpo, in Canberra, Australia, this past weekend. I was very surprised to see how well it ran... I added a weight (metal crane hook) to the indexer arm, as sometimes it DID let 2 balls in at once... with the added weight, sometimes it skips a ball, but at least it never let 2 in. 2 issues, that I will need to ultimately solve: The stirrer piece will forcibly push a ball down the chute, if the hopper is full, causing the ball to be ejected out of the machine... The main slider mechanism (2 support arms at the bottom), worked their way loose after several hours, and the machine starts vibrating/being noisy - keeping an eye on these parts, and pushing them back in (even when running), kept it running for many more hours at once. This could be solved with some bricks on the other side, stopping it from coming out. the Pneumatic module started to run slower and slower over time.. we swapped in an L motor, and it got a bit better... it doesn't cope very well with a full load of balls - and if one or two balls ever get left in the scoop, it fouls the next pickup, spilling balls everywhere. It's definitely not happy with a full load of balls either - takes a long time to lift up... yet, perfectly fine with >10 balls currently uploading some videos to youtube.. will post when they are done (maybe in the general thread).. I'll put some pics/vides of OneMoreRobot's layout, if he doesn't :) (since he has 99% akiyuki modules)
  21. I have 4 of them, awaiting time to use in a build.... not sure if I'll ever need (or afford!) more than that!
  22. Now that you've been on the Technic Team for a couple of years - do you think you'll ever get to do something as different as this, for an official B Model? or does marketing have too much control/say that, if the A model is a Truck.. the B model needs to be something similar? It'd be hilarious, for you guys to release an official technic set, as a Duck, or Bird... and the B model is a truck ;)
  23. ahh.. I didn't realise you were doing illegal stuff! ;) go right ahead then! I won't call the Lego Police!
  24. Great to get photos... but unfortunately, like most things on the internet.. someone has already beaten you to it! http://wheels.sariel.pl/ Mouse-over every wheel, and it'll show you what tyres match up
