  1. This is all just crazy ideas in my mind, of course, but no I don't think they would go with Classic for a full line. I think it worked really well for the D2C Ideas/Cuusoo Exo Suit because of the target audience (AFOLs who both like the build and also simply must have the new green classic space figs!!), and the only other example being Benny who was one specific character with one single (albeit large) set related to him. I think the trend toward ever more interesting and detailed minifigs means that they must hold up in Lego's marketing data and won't be going away any time soon, so the classic space design which has no printing or detail whatsoever besides the CS logo wouldn't work for a general-release Space wave. Nor do I think, as much as I'd love it, that a classic space aesthetic for a full line would be something TLG would be willing to do since they need to capture sales from the greater market and not just AFOLs/parents who're feeling nostalgic. With an updated Futuron lineup (whatever it might be called), they could easily design space sets that still feel modern but with just some design hints that are a throwback to the older sets (like the updated minifig itself) which would appeal to their current target audience as well as still providing some excitement for us older folks (just look at this discussion based off the couple pics from this upcoming City set!). TLG: If this is what you have planned, I'm more than happy to do some early set reviews for you from my obviously visionary perspective!
  2. Seems like there should be more than 500 2x4s in a K box, but I guess they are pretty bulk and don't settle well. I doubt a PaB cup would do you better than the box (at least not by much of a margin), so probably your best bet is Bricklink: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=3001 You can refine your search for the colors you want and showing only sellers with a minimum quantity (say, 250+, depending on how many you really need an how many orders you're willing to place). Looks like you can do OK at $0.13-17 each, plus shipping. If you stick to the low end of that range and order in decent quantity, you should beat the K box pricing. Of course, depending on your project, there might be other ways of accomplishing things more economically than buying thousands of 2x4s. Never underestimate the economic value of filling space or building unseen support structures from Duplo, for instance.
  3. Yes, absolutely. Seriously, though, I'd be in greater agreement with that if the print wasn't updated. Honestly, I'm with the other folks that say the updates ruin the print (when looked at as a stand-alone fig next to the existing Futuron design) and wouldn't buy just for it since the print doesn't match any of the older stuff. Also, whether my crazy super-long-shot of a theory pans out or not, it looks like the space logo on the updated Futuron suit isn't done in metallic gold but rather more of a standard yellowish color. Hope that's not the case in production, especially if we somehow get a whole lineup of them!
  4. OK, this might be a crazy thought, but… If you look closely at the back in that flickr image ( https://www.flickr.c...ous/16528063742 ) the green Futuron guy even has back printing (continuing the belt/loops), and the front has a lot more subtle detail if you zoom in on it. I can see no reason why they'd have updated the Futuron print and gone to the extent to do back printing as well and have it totally not match the existing Futuron stuff… unless he's going to match with NEW Futuron stuff. I mean, I think most folks would agree (for better or worse) that the original Futuron print is too simplistic to work with today's sets and minifigs (though I still think they're great and have a large set of them myself), but this update might be enough to make 'em work in a new line. How amazing would a neo-retro space line with updated Futuron minifigs be??
  5. Wow! Agreed- NPU with the binoculars for the chain on the chainsaw, and the boom stick also jumped out at me. Love it!
  6. Love it! You've packed a lot of detail into that fairly small MOC, and it all flows together so nicely! And yeah, the yellow crystal as french fries is one excellent thing that the Friends line gave us! (Heartlake Shopping mall - which is the only set those yellow ones come in, and only 1 of them! )
  7. Welcome! I would say, commit to rebuilding some before selling and see how you feel. You can say it's to confirm that the sets are complete before putting them up for sale! If you build through most of a (maybe all of the last full year of sets you have or something) and haven't caught the bug again, then maybe selling makes sense. Still, unless you need the money, I'd hold on to 'em as they'll continue to hold there value but will be a pain to re-buy later if you change your mind!
  8. Looks like 1x16 Technic Link making a comeback: http://rebrickable.com/parts/2637 It does look like a solid set, and I completely agree on the non-yellow sentiment!
  9. OK, I LOLed.
  10. In my own experience, I'd say that the answer is "both." Older pieces definitely had more clutch power (and in fact some were re-designed because they had too much), though I thought that was mostly done with by the late 80's. Most of my stuff from then seems OK. Embrittlement with age is likely another factor as you noted. The ABS will be a bit less flexible so rather than silent flexing you'll get a bit of creaking as the parts strain against each other and strain internally. It's not really a matter of "replacing oils" when it comes to aged ABS (especially if it's had a lot of UV exposure) so I doubt something like Armor-All would do much besides make the bricks slippery, but perhaps someone else with a more in-depth understanding of materials science/polymer chemistry can chime in!
  11. Fantastic! But… no working brakes?? Come on! The colors are fun and the overall design is just great. I especially like that you included valve stems on the wheels!
  12. I believe TLG uses their own custom software for set design and instructions… someone here I'm sure can remember the name of it! I think most everyone else uses Lego Digital Designer or some variant of LDraw (either with the built-in instruction creating options or with some manual tweaking/sub-model building involved) to produce instructions for their own designs.
  13. That totally looks like the guy from Beastmaster… but the setting doesn't look right. And, of course, without his trusty ferrets in-scene I couldn't be sure!
  14. I'm with the majority of people here who say it's nice to work/build standing, but it's best to have the option to sit as well. If you have the budget for it, one of those motorized sit-stand tables are great. if you don't, a great option is to simply get a standing table but then a high work chair. That is, a standing-height table to work at, but then also a bar/standing height chair so you can still sit at your high table just as if you were at a regular desk height when you need a break from standing. There's plenty of options for what is essentially a regular desk chair on a high, stabilized stool stand with addition foot rest area that you can use at a high table, like this inexpensive example. That might get you the best of both worlds without the cost of a convertible system.
  15. I agree with those here who have said that limiting access isn't a good idea, but I also think some of the things up there that are really bad shouldn't clutter up the place for a year. I mean, if you go to the site and use a filter under the Discover section of projects "Ending soon" you'll see the oldest entries on the site since they switched to the 1-year thing, and there's a pretty big number that have been up there for 9 months and have garnered less than 10 votes! SO- a simple way to clear out the chaff without adding barriers to entry or negativity (like adding down-votes) would be to require an entry to get something like 100 votes in 30 days or be removed. If the idea has any merit at all, 100 votes should be easy to get in the first month even when it hasn't started snowballing in popularity yet. I will say that the Kickstarter-like idea would add an interesting dynamic to things! I think the biggest challenge there is determining what price to ask for a given design without doing a lot of pre-review to figure out what it would likely be. Now, keeping with the idea of relative levels of merit, maybe that option gets switched on when something hits, say, 2500 votes and at that point a general estimate for price is made and if X number of people actually pony up the cash before it hits 10,000 votes (as I assume a smaller number of people actually paying would be weighted higher than just a vote) it jumps right to the final review phase. Not that anything will change based on our discussion here, but it's interesting to throw the Ideas around!
  16. Great looking vehicle! Love the color scheme. The steering setup is fantastic in that small space.
  17. I'm definitely in the "Wow, looks great! Oh boy, look at all those stickers… " camp. I think I'll reserve judgement until we see more of the lineup than the MM and the Mansion. I'm guessing that with licensing costs and all the new molds for the characters and such, the stickers were a cost-saving measure to keep what will probably be one of the the most-bought sets in the lineup at a reasonable cost, but when stickers cover that much of a build it makes it look cheap to me. All that said, overall it's a total nostalgia hit and it looks like a lot of FUN, which is what Legos is about.
  18. Cool. Happy building, and enjoy your new(ly decorated) Lego Room!
  19. Yes, I've used Command Adhesive strips on Lego before, and it works well! Follow the instructions (and get real 3M brand Command, not generic "easy release strips" or anything) and it only leaves a very faint residue that came right off with a little soap & water. They don't work so well on a very porous surface, so if you were going to use them on something like an unpainted concrete brick wall they might not hold so well if you were putting much weight on them, but otherwise they'll hold quite a bit. Also, the mostly smooth and flat underside of a baseplate, even with the antistuds, is actually a pretty good surface for that as well. I mean, I wouldn't try building a minifig-scale modular building out from it hanging on the wall or anything, but they should hold a good amount of brick. Plus, they're really quite inexpensive (in the US, at least- I don't know your locale). Don't buy a package with hooks and whatnot, just get the strips themselves in one of the replacement/refill packs like this: http://www.amazon.com/Command-Medium-Mounting-Refill-9-Strip/dp/B0014CQGW4 I'd use 4 of them, basically one on each corner, or 3 across the top edge (which would divide out nicely if you got a 9-pack). If you want a really clean look, you can place them such that the release tabs are under the edge of the baseplate as long as you can flex it (bend it up gently) enough to get hold of them with a pair of needle nose pliers if not your fingers when you want to remove it. Let me also say that I've done the screw through a Technic plate before, and that works really well (with no damage as long as you get the right size screw head and don't over-tighten) depending on what you're using it for. :)
  20. Wow. Very cool… but it looks like it'd give me a headache trying to control it when it hits those couple of areas that it has trouble negotiating!
  21. Yes, that's it! I remember liking it, but haven't seen it in many years. I think I'll see if it's available on Netflix… Your turn, Brickelodeon!
  22. I've used this in the past, and it seemed to work well. Not sure if there are any issues now with the changes that they've been making to Bricklink since it's been a while, but it's worth a shot! http://mlcad2bricklink.com/index.php
  23. I think that's great. The base works really well both as a diorama and representing the cliff face, and the almost-fallen-over tree feels perfect. My constructive criticism would be that the fire doesn't feel quite right to me. Maybe if there were a few straight-up flames (part 6126 - http://guide.lugnet.com/partsref/search.cgi?q=6126 ) it would feel more like they're statically burning pieces whereas the bendy ones feel like they should be indicating more general motion to me. Really nice build!
  24. Hint: "You know, for kids!"
  25. Alright, here ya go! It should either pop right to mind… or not.
