42056 - Porsche Speculation
aol000xw replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
If you don't value it as a Technic set . Kinda liking someone for being hot even if as dumb as a brick? In Technic functions are sexy, this is not Creator. -
Do you think it can be explained? It is an obvious oversimplification that I myself manage in a way that suits best for me. For example I take into account model weight as a correction factor once PF are taken into account. What I am sure is that emotional values aren't part of the factors I manage when analyzing cost. Those usually come later once I take into account my inventory and make the purchase anyways.

Since we ere dealing with thousand of parts we can average and check our value against the hundreds of sets for consistency. All of this either is derived from size/weight/complexity or isn't relevant for fabrication cost hence not affecting price. And you missed a key factor: production volume, how many times the part will be produced. And again that can be averaged. Of course there will be deviations but those can be accounted for too. Pretty funny the "emotional appeal of part" as a cost factor.

I got the UCS Star Destroyer as soon as I saw it with no fuss at all. It felt Ultimate to me, got every SW UCS since the first Xwing, and love every one of those. It is not about money.I love the Porsche, it looks amazing, and I have no problem on 300€+ sets but with this one I am not totally there. At first sight the Porsche looks incredible but when getting into the Technic side it starts lacking a bit. It is not about PF or RC, just smaller things would suffice. We got the gear box (MOCers were the innovators on this), and a new part for that, and the wheels with better pivot point, but they went just half way with that, 8880 hubs with the ball gear still feel way way better. Same shocks as ever when we could get something like those hybrids people make combining a pneumatic cylinder with a spring. No new gears, no new diff, -let alone torsen- , They were very very close but I took my 8880 awesomeness ruler and while the Porsche is better in some aspects, it is equal or falls short in others. It just isn't ultimate enough, It is in the right direction just a bit short on innovation or functions and too greedy on price. They are almost there but I think it is not this one. Still probably best Technic set ever. just does not feel like 300€ to me.

All your figures are wrong. Deal with it.An injection mold for those rims while expensive isn't in the range of 400.000€ even with the strictest tolerance levels and those rims aren't even polished. divide that amount by 2 at the very least, and that for a mold of the 4 Rims. Also 20000 boxes is a very very low amount of boxes for Technic. Lego itself considers 10k boxes a limited edition right? Technic sells way more units than that. Currently Lego sells globally 200+ million boxes per year. even if it is of their entire catalog that on average spans 2 seasons sets, that makes, what 300 sets? We could look for an average part number as we know that Lego sold last year 72 billion parts, after a significant growth from the previous year (again) By the way, you made all the Licensing stuff out of thin air.

I guess the new wheel hubs will be available at S@H, but what about the wheels? Those are exclusive to this set so, any chance? -

Seriously the logic is so flawed that I don't feel I will be able to make you understand why. Good job, TLG loves that kind of thinking. If you are happy with it go for it. Just because it is the only one you know does not mean it is right. There is no point in comparing The Porsche out of the official sets range. There have been other sets with premium package. bigger sets, there is plenty in the Lego history to figure out a sensible objective value of the set. Then you can discuss how much money are you willing to give away just for the novelty and some black recycled cardboard. But that doesn't change the objective value of what is in the box in relation to the other sets. I've been an early adopter of many technologies, I paid and still do a premium for many things -hell paid 400€ for my first 80GB Intel SSD- but I never hide the fact that I am being an idiot paying an unjustified amount of money just because I want something that I know shouldn't be priced the way it is. It is Ok to be willing to pay the 300€. Subjective value can't be priced, and If you don't mind being milked great for you. But the math does not hold on this one, arguing to defend TLG princing on this set is pure fanboyism. I prefer to buy it knowing that I am beign an idiot by choice than a fanboy. -

Comparing Bricklinking parts with purchasing an official set is absurd. Bricklink is a reselling store, many parts come from parted brand new sets sold for a profit. so prices are no relevant of comparable to official sets at all.Perhaps you think Lego should sell us 32016 red #3 connector at 4€ , what about 14L red axle? Compare apples to apples, any mention of Bricklink is pretty poor thinking -

Coherence is as important as logic. They showed everything and gave tons of details of the others models. They already knew it had no PF and no RC. Not confirming or denying facts about a set which already had high expectations, was hiding info to foster speculation, which is actually going for the hype. It was a carefully calculated move. -

So showing a model with camo stickes and no telling a thing about it like PF or RC isn't going for the hype right? Yeah our fault, TLG din't put the bait. -
I see a lot of rationalization of people trying to justify the price tag, but little real arguments and even less backed up by numbers. I think a good starting point to analyze its price is the Arocs. From a price perspective both models are quite close in number of parts and panels. The Arocs even have pricer parts than average like PF and pneumatic elements. Both models include new parts Difference in price is 100€, almost a 42039, on average 1000 parts. You get a thick nice instruction book and some better packaging. for 100€ I can buy a really good Lego book, a Porsche one and some very nice plastic boxes for all the parts with 100€ Every now and then I accept to pay an unjustified premium as a reward for a company or product, just because I want them to succeed, but always within constrains that make sense. Overpricing just because you have a monopoly isn't something I celebrate.

The Bodywork is fantastic and the gearbox is well beyond anything TLG has done before, so I understand it may look ultimate to them, however the suspension setup looks average. I can accept that but they went too far with the hype. If they made it a fairer price this would be killer and pave the way for really ultimate models. They took however the Apple road. make it nice and shiny put it in a box that makes it look it better than it is and ignore its real value when putting the price tag. -

Don't take me wrong I love to see such an awesome year, BWE, Volvo, Claas and Porsche are all amazing sets. but the Porsche price even with the nice box iis pretty offensive. The Arocs is the same part count, has new amazing parts too, PF, pneumatics and is licensed.. Some cardboard isn't worth 100€! Edit: Make it 250€ and I'll take 2 or even 3. but 300€? It is a hard sell. -

Now that the Porsche has been finally revealed this looks like really great value. -

My only concern is price. I like the "box experence" and the Porsche book but don't think it is worth the 300€ price tag. Edit: Wonder if this is their first step into a new "milk the AFOL" franchise. -

If no PF and price are now confirmed, it is overpriced. -

Almost 50 pages and known facts about this set could be condensed to one line. Expectations are high on this one. -
I love this kind of MOCs I see no reason against combining RC and Lego. RC can easily break Lego, true, ABS have its limits after all, but it's just a matter of taking those into account when building and enjoy the range and power of RC. PF is way below what Lego can handle, even if a stupidly down-geared XL motor can snap gears. Just keep this at hand... ...and enjoy some RPMs
