Wow that is some serious torque. -
Is my RCX useless now

Try this driver, it's the chip maker for a pretty generic one used in many adapters: http://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowProduct.aspx?p_id=225&pcid=41 -
I was very tempted by the 8878 myself but price and voltage made me try another route. I modded a battery box to use 3.3V AA rechargeable LiPo batteries (3s2p). That makes 10volts of high discharge power. I'm waiting for the connectors to allow balanced charge directly to the battery pack without removing the batteries.

Not planning a sale, but I know if I break the seals i'll keep the set. I got it as an afterthougth for blue parts so i'll wait for TLG next movement on that front before deciding it's future. It's hard to tell if other dark blue models are in the pipeline or it is going to be an "esclusive" thing in the Technic line.

Hello If I understand it, you used a serial to USB cable adapter. This cable needs some drivers for the integrated controller (a chip in the cable) . Probably it uses a chip from Prolific (it's pretty common) I can confirm this works in W7 and W8. First of all you need windows to detect the serial port with no Lego tower attached and.from your comments I am not sure if you achieved this as a first step. -
08880 is awesome, but 08860 is better Mine is such a random number that I don't even remember it 16xxx I think.

Unimog Trial
aol000xw replied to fourlord's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
My heart faints when I think of the scratches, on the other hand I love it, It just needs some of those nice and expensive tyres. -
I ordered mine at S@H on day one at 3AM and got it a few days later. A couple days after the first order I saw it was backordered but not sold out so I ordered another. The second one arrived this monday. I got notice of this model and its release date just by chance on this forums. I just came out of my dark ages with an Unimog on the table and I was looking for info on third party tyres, So I am incredibly happy. I got two mainly for the blue parts and I did not open the second one yet. Now I am not sure... it is getting really expensive.

6 months.... Ok, besides lots of parts and skill, I see I am lacking a lot of patience. And nice tyres too but that is TLG's fault.

Well, after many tries, angle checks and failures finally got something working with that homocinetic joint and no friction at any point of the suspenssion travel. Stiff enougth rear to support the batteries and soft enougth front to react to terrain, and finally "compact" enougth albeit the black wishbones. the steering works quite well but I was unable to use the hubs in upright position, It could use a longer rack, but good enougth for now... Also made the front a couple studs lower just for the looks... I'll need a chassis. Any hint on gearboxes that can work with the car in movement and focused on speed? Everything I see is crawler type or not useful with the vehicle at speed. I'm thinking on using a clutch with a linear gearbox controled with the servomotor, but before grinding gears with my own ideas would be nice to try something already tested...

Licensed Technic Sets.
aol000xw replied to JTS's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Ah! that Sukhoi is a good start but 1:24 for a little fighter? Are you kidding me? I saw your Hindeburg, so we both know what big and detailed means. -
Licensed Technic Sets.
aol000xw replied to JTS's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Ha! In that link the Lego 4953 is a Tomcat. There are no Migs with that configuration (air intakes, variable wings) but the color schema might be inspired by some acrobatic migs. Too vague for licensing just as the 42009. Is interesting however that an otherwise clearly military unit may be considered if deweaponized. -
Working car clutch
aol000xw replied to Tamas Juhasz's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Im planning a fast MOC with 2 RC motors and 10v LiPo modified battery packs, not a crawler type, That is a lot of power and speed -i hope- and even if the gears are synchronized the gear selectors are vulnerable. If wheel speed is high enougth you might not be able to make the switch movement fast enougth to avoid damage to the gear selectors. Well that's what I think, and why I asked about the double clutch; of course perhaps I am a bit optimistic about the achievable speeds... or I am missing some trivial fact. I did not specify that my concern where on the selectors and not the gears itself.. Anyways most clutchs out there can't achieve what his design does so in that regard is awesome, and my concerns are more in the line on how to apply correctly his system to my crazy projects. -
Wow, So detailed... And those tyres are perfect in your MOC Somewhere I read that the TLG is the number one world maker of tyres by number yet they only make those lame balloons. worse yet those are shrinked version of the old 8466 tyres

Yes, I want to use the black wishbones The point is using the black wishbones with a three pin fixation for the wheels, These use ball joints so it would be even harder to attach them. than the crawler ones. It will be used in a road chassis, so I don't need great travel or eficiency, just make it as compact as possible and good enougth for the car not to be torn apart by a pothole. Ok this isn't the simplest route but is funny and it might work in the end

Licensed Technic Sets.
aol000xw replied to JTS's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Ferrari was quite disappointing in my opinion, except for the F1, and that was after the Wiliams and the Silver champion. That silver champion should have been a licensed version in the first place. The Unimog is awesome but the real thing itself is extraordinary. I think licensing, can make sense in certain cases but for the most part no. Llicensing means fees, and sometimes overexploit of the license and weak models..They better license when they get a great idea, instead of getting ideas from the license. As has been said ficctional vehicles althougth atractive at first may result in poor models due to lack of functionality or lack of appeal except for the franchise fans, and even then... for example, the only non Technic Lego that I own are every single UCS Star Wars model, but those technic Star Wars models... I didn't like them, Mind you that your Tumbler or Delorean might be more adequate as a UCS for movie vehicles ala Star wars than a technic saga.In the line of movies and thinking of the 41999 a Dodge charger General Lee might fit, but again is a one time model. As Technic, I can think of very few licenses I might be interested Wall-E,. a really big and detailed F14 Tomcat with pneumatics and motors for variable wings, landing gear, canopy, flaps etc etc But I don't think they touch the military. Meanwhile you can get de Cuuso DeLorean ^^ -
Hello, thanks for your answer About the long wishbones... well it is a whim, not a matter of practicality, I just want to make that combination work. However I take note about angle and alignment, there is a lot to learn... The homocinetic joint is thiis? If so, what stronger alternative is there that accounts for variations in distance between hub and diff when the suspension works? I think 8880 has a nicer system integrated in the hub, but I save those for another MOC.

Working car clutch
aol000xw replied to Tamas Juhasz's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Recently I tried something similar with those exact tyres, a double clutch indeed, completely isolating the gearbox. But failed at it as my design caused friction and so load on the motor. Your approach is very elegant, love it. Correct me if I am wrong, but for a totally smooth gear change isn't a dual system needed with one clutch at the input and another at the output of the gearbox, both working together? I am thinking more on the line of a fast car than a crawler. with a couple RC motors, if you disengage the wheels, but the motors aren´t completely stopped the gearbox isn't safe. If is the motor what you disengage, the speed of the car can tear apart the gearbox. Obviously I am thinking of changing gears with the vehicle at speed preferibly without stopping the motors in the process. -
Hello everyone First my Lego background... My First Lego Technic set was 8860 at 8 then nothing until I was a working adult and an omninous Dark age was waiting for those sets. I paid the occasional glance at stores and got a few sets sometimes few years apart, that were built once and put in a shelve or simply stored in boxes. Some sealed in their box for a few years. Besides 8860 chassis I got 8865 test car 8880 Supercar, 8448,Street sensation, 8458 Silver Champion, 8466 4x4 offroader, 8455 Back hoe, 8421 Crane, 8043 Excavator, 8258 Truck and some mindstorms And a few weeks ago 8110 Unimog.... I always loved Unimogs, so this time I built it. But this marvel made me want more, and opened those old sealed boxes, and got a couple small models, a Crawler too, and thanks to these forums In my Lego shopping spree I got a couple 41999 ;) and started toying around, modding some battery boxes... and obviously wanted to build a sports car . So now the problem... First off, I know that half my problems can be solved with the 42000 wheel hubs, but by now my Lego budget is between zero and some high negative number. I wanted to do a sports car, wheels not attached by axle, 3 pins looked nice, and wanted the ¿wishbones? of the silver champion. So that let me with the portal hubs of the crawler and those long arms of the silver champion.. Yeah an absurd combination specially with portal hubs for a sports car... welll, my Lego, my rules In the next picture two different aproaches showing maximun width I can use. Just dirty builds to try things out... The left one is stiffier so won´t lower the chassis much under the weight of the body but it is too wide with no room left for a differential, The right one is a bit too tall. will get the right height with the weight and makes room for a differential. Also ignore those on the righ,t one is a steering unit with the portal sideways and the other is just ... another test. Those on the left (exchanged in relation to the previous picture) are my best trys by now... Notice the left one gets one stud under the arms so I can get the 3 studs wide needed for a diff. as I can only separate left and right arms 1 stud. I don't know If you can see what I was trying with those pictures, but how can I make this more compact albeit the builky wheel hubs? Do you think what I made will work at all? Should I try a pushrod suspension? Has anyone tried that combination in a constrained width fashion? Hints? Suggestions?
