After some initial development of proposed sets, The Lego Group "tests" their proposed models with groups of kids. They see what they like to play with, and what they "gravitate" to. Today's toy market is very competitive. There are inexpensive RC cars that can run circles around anything produced by Lego, yet parents buy Power Functions-enabled sets for their kids because of the VERSATILITY of Lego (to be taken apart, and made into something else). Most kids nowadays are not satisfied with just rolling an inanimate vehicle across the floor, turning some knobs, etc. -- they want ACTION. Only 5% of Lego sets are bought by AFOLs.

what is "technic"?
DLuders replied to KEvron's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yes, I would say that the Lego 7905 Building Crane really is a "Technic" set, but has been placed in the "City" theme so that it shows up on more store shelves. As others have pointed out, some large retailers (such as Wal-Mart in the USA) don't even stock Technic sets. Besides, parents looking for a COOL, functional set like this would possibly be "scared off" if the packaging looked too "technical" for their kiddie! -
Custom Flex System Cables
DLuders replied to Junpei's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Since the flex cables only work IN TENSION, they would have to be PULLING on something that could automatically return to its normal position after the tension is released. Gravity could pull the load back into position, or the flex cables could be operated in pairs (pulling both ends of a seesaw, for example).- 3 replies

ACC 4track
DLuders replied to dikkie klijn's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It looks cool, but if the tracked vehicle is supposed to climb over obstacles, wouldn't it be better to switch the tracks around so that the big slanted side is facing the obstacle? The front face of the treads are quite low now, so they would have trouble getting a grip atop an obstacle.... -
Great review, Nathan! It makes me want to get my hands on this set even more! In regards to the "lurching" of the 3-part boom (shown in the middle of your below), perhaps there is some friction causing the boom pieces to bind up. Maybe some 100% Silicone Spray (which you can buy at your local auto parts store) would make the boom operate more smoothly. 100% Silicone is safe to use on Lego parts without affecting the plastic at all. In regards to the "Stabilizer Wobble" shown in your below, is it practical to replace the bent 16L axle while the set is fully assembled? Could you use your Needlenose Pliers to reshape the axle so that it's not bent anymore?

Custom power supply - an idea
DLuders replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
On this previous Eurobricks topic, one can see that a simple 9V Battery clip can be soldered onto the underside of a Lego Power Functions Extension Wire's electrified 2x2 plate, like this: -

Review of Jeff Boen's "THE BRICKGUN BOOK" (No Starch Press
DLuders replied to DLuders's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Folks, I "reviewed" the book because the publisher (No Starch Press) sent one to me to evaluate. The book consists of 95% building instructions. I already indicated how good the instructions are. I could not replicate the pages because they are copyrighted. I only included the ones that the author himself, and the publisher, made available. No, I did not build any of the five gun models because: 1) I lack the necessary parts, 2) I'm working on another, BIG Lego project which requires all of my available funds, and 3) I (personally) don't get "turned on" by building Lego guns. In my review, I avoided the question whether it is IN GOOD TASTE or not to build Lego guns. I have seen full-size, Lego AK-47s at the Seattle, Washington Brickcon 2011 event. Many folks did not agree with these models, but they "are allowed" in a free society. SO, if you like Lego guns, you will enjoy this book. If you don't like them, don't buy the book. The publisher must have done a "market survey" to ensure that it will make a profit on the venture.- 19 replies

REVIEW OF THE BRICKGUN BOOK – Build the World’s Most Realistic LEGO® Handguns Details about the 232-page work by Jeff Boen Title: The BrickGun Book Author: Jeff Boen Place of Publication: San Francisco, California USA Publisher: No Starch Press, Inc. Date of Publication: May 2013 ISBN-10: 1-59327-490-4 ISBN-13: 978-1-59327-490-0 Number of Pages: 232 in four colors Dimensions: 8” x 10” x 1/2” thick (20.2cm x 25.4 cm x 1.27 cm thick) Reviewed By: David G. Luders [NOTE: This book is not authorized or endorsed by The Lego Group. LEGO® is a registered trademark of The Lego Group, but in this Book Review I use the word “LEGO” without the trademark symbol for readability.] INTRODUCTION As stated in the YouTube video above, ‘The BrickGun Book shows you how to build five remarkably sleek LEGO® handgun replicas, like the classic Beretta 92FS and a formidable rubber-band-firing MAC-11. Each chapter includes step-by-step building instructions and a complete parts list using only readily available LEGO pieces. Builder Jeff Boen has designed each model with stunning accuracy and attention to detail, focusing on everything from 1:1 real-life scale to functioning cocking and trigger mechanisms. Each BrickGun is ultra-realistic in look and feel, but mostly harmless -- perfect for display or your next backyard battle.” BACKGROUND INFORMATION The author wrote, “WARNING -- Adult supervision is required. These models are not suitable for children under the age of 12.” The first four models do not fire projectiles, but “The MAC-11 shoots rubber bands….Be particularly careful when handling [all of] these models in public because they have been mistaken for real weapons. If you take your LEGO gun out in public, add a bright orange tip to the muzzle to show that it’s not the real thing.” SUMMARY OF CONTENT Chapter 1: BG22 with Magazine – 299 Total Parts and 69 Unique Part Types Chapter 2: Beretta 92FS – 263 Total Parts and 69 Unique Part Types Chapter 3: Desert Eagle – 290 Total Parts and 78 Unique Part Types Chapter 4: Colt 1911 – 268 Total Parts and 67 Unique Part Types Chapter 5: MAC-11 Rubber Band – 312 Total Parts and 61 Unique Part Types RECOMMENDATION Gun aficionados would enjoy building these realistic LEGO models. One can appreciate the author’s engineering of each gun’s trigger and slide movements. The illustrations are superbly done with LDraw software – they are similar in style to the building instruction booklets in official LEGO sets. The BrickGun 1911 is my favorite. The print book is a good value at USD $0.129 per page. The paper is of high quality. As the author suggests, one can get the necessary LEGO parts from Bricklink.com . Blakbird (Eric Albrecht) was very kind to e-mail me the Lego 8461 Williams F1 Racer sticker set vector file that he mentioned above. He is allowing me to post this on SkyDrive, with these words of wisdom: "The source file was created in Canvas and will only open in that proprietary software, but the PDF is also vector. If someone makes stickers out of this file, I'd appreciate a copy of the sticker sheet in exchange for providing the file." Lego 8461 Sticker Set.cvx file Lego 8461 Sticker Set.pdf file

Yesterday, I telephoned Lego Customer Service in the USA to inquire about the INDIVIDUAL RETAIL SALE of Lego Power Functions (PF) L-Motors, PF Servo Motor, and PF v2 Receiver. I did not get an answer, and I got no response from various TLG management personnel that I dealt with in the past. So far, The Lego Group has not offered these elements for individual sale through Shop.Lego.com ; they have only been available via the Lego Technic 9398 4x4 Crawler set. Bricklink sellers have parted-out the 9398 sets and sold these elements at exhorbitant markup prices. According to the LEGO.com Powerfunctions webpages (linked below), the advertised "release date" for these elements are: PF 88003 L-Motor (Lego Element ID 6000564) -- "The Large Motor will not be available through LEGO.com until June 2013." Well, it's now mid-June -- why aren't they available? The previous "promised date was March 2013, but that got slipped until June 2013. Why should one have to wait 10 months for individual sale? I don't recall that kind of delay happening with any other PF elements. PF 88004 Servo Motor (Lego Element ID 6000566) -- "The Servo Motor will not be available through LEGO.com until June 2013." PF 8884 Remote Control IR Receiver v2 (NOT the currently available v1 PF Receiver) (Lego Element ID 6020086) -- no date listed.

8264 modified rc
DLuders replied to legomania94's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
What legomania94 means is "Does anyone know how to change the 8264 and do it all RC"? NXTLiftboy made the below, with these remarks: "Instructions are available at this link: http://s186.photobuc...mview=slideshow . More info: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/90037 . This is a motorised and remote-controlled modification of LEGO set 8264, so NOT just the set from the shop! I added parts from the LEGO bulldozer set 8275, besides Power Functions lights, a switch, and a cord."
