  1. It also depends on where people grew up. In some countries, Legoredo was called Silver City, for example. In the US, we had Parma Sean Lafeet, Black Jack Hawkins, and Tattoo McGoo. The skeleton in 6232 (probably my favorite pirate set of all time, by the way) was named George. Most of these were probably not meant to be official names and just randomly added to the magazines and catalogs to make them more exciting for the kids. The 1989 characters were a rare example of a cohesive story line. I didn't grow up with the stories because they were before my time, but there were definitely some important named characters, mainly Kahuka, Broadside, and Redbeard. We also had some cohesive casts of characters in Wild West and Fright Knights. I think I'm starting to stray off topic though.
  2. I'm also really surprised by the negativity. (It may look like I was being negative about the minifigures -- that's really not what I meant. It's only a minor critique in my opinion, easily explained by the fact this takes place years later and everyone we knew is gone.) I'm especially surprised by how much people hate the palm trees. I would definitely prefer to see them bring back the jointed trees. It would definitely require some type of redesign because the originals wore out very easily. I get frustrated with them because I often end up with a palm tree falling over and I don't know if it's the male or female end of the connector that's the problem, and they're not cheap to replace. I never saw the beach until I was in my mid 20s. When I was growing up, the Lego palm trees were pretty much the only way I knew of palm trees, except for the palm branches we had on Easter morning, which also looked like the Lego ones. So to me, even now, the Lego palm tree is what palm trees look like. I'm probably not alone in this. We grew up without the internet and trees in movies were too small and fuzzy on the old CRT televisions to get a good look at what real palm trees looked like. I don't know if I'll ever be able to accept a Lego palm tree that doesn't look like the original. It's just so integral to the Lego aesthetics, it's like proposing an alternative to the minifigure. (Oh, wait... they did do that! ) I can't speak for them, but this isn't what I inferred from the posts I've read. I'm not gatekeeping. I'm saying that if someone isn't aware of the main characters of the theme, they're casual fans - by definition. That doesn't mean those people don't have fond memories of the set and didn't spend many hours playing with it. It just means that they never bothered to read about the lore, which is fine. Yeah, you're right about de Martinet. I think the person who illustrated the comic took some liberties because the red haired guy didn't really look like a Frenchman. The characters in the comics aren't always completely true to the minifigures. Anne and Will were also a bit different in minifigure form, and I don't think they ever officially said that those minifigures were indeed the characters from the comics.
  3. I don't have the box either, unfortunately. It's hard to read, but here's a photo I found with a quick search. It talks about Governor Broadside. De Martinet appeared in the comic, the Ladybird books, and the cassette tapes, which are all rather obscure today, so I wouldn't fault anyone for not knowing him. The governor and Redbeard are the most obvious ones though. They were in many set descriptions, magazine comics, etc. I can understand them not bringing back Redbeard because they already did in PoBB. I think the exclusion of Governor Broadside was just a complete oversight, which doesn't bother me, but I think it's sloppy work. If I'm being more kind, though, we could just say that since we know PoBB takes place years later, everyone who worked in Eldorado Fortress has long since moved on, even the governor. You can't go home. Right?
  4. I haven't seen anyone arguing that they should stick to only the original female minifigures. I think we'd all like to see more women introduced, and there are actually several women from the original comics that were never produced, and a lot of us would like to see them incorporated into new sets. It may be true that most people don't know the characters. That's really because most people are just casual Lego fans. But to argue that people aren't aware of characters like Governor Broadside is like saying no one knows who Flatfoot Thompson is after they grew up with Fort Legoredo. Yeah, maybe the average person doesn't know his name after all these years, but anyone who's put any effort into learning about the theme beyond just assembling the set will know this stuff. Saying the lore doesn't matter because it was 34 years ago - well, this entire set is based off a 34 year old set. So if you're going that far back in time, you're already going that far back in time. Personally, I'm not upset that they didn't bring back the original characters. It's not a big deal at all, although I would have preferred to see them. It feels like whoever did the marketing materials for this set is just completely ignorant of Lego Pirates lore. I just thought it was hilarious that the page says, "The gang's all here!" and not a single character from the original is present in this set, unless you count the unnamed soldiers. Again, it doesn't actually bother me. I like the minifigures we have here. But it really is a head scratcher that they didn't put any effort researching this set like they did for PoBB. Edit: I should also add that the comic is not the only place where we learn the characters's names. Their names are all over the printed materials from 1989 through the late '90s. Edit 2: Actually, the names were even printed on the box.
  5. I tried to submit an idea for Spacebabies. Other than being related to classic space, it was completely unrelated to the Galaxy Explorer. They rejected it due to not being an authorized third party license. I tried resubmitting it and they did it again. The biggest reason we know it isn't Broadside is because the box calls this guy an admiral. Broadside was the governor. They didn't have a proper accounting system to understand which sets made money until more recently. Back then, they had didn't keep track of how much parts cost to produce for each set. They only tracked the costs at the aggregate level, so it's entirely possible that they had one or two sets each year that actually lost money or made very little. Well, we already have an admiral here in this set. I would really like to see Steve make a comeback. I'd also like more of the classic pirates to return. There's way too many to list them all here. That's a good one, except it's double sided. This is why I don't like double sided heads. They've been redesigning a lot of the hat and hair pieces to accommodate dual prints with varying degrees of success. There's one they're selling right now with red facial hair that would be perfect for forestmen, but it's printed on both sides. I might just wipe one side off with Brasso. I hate that it's come to this because I'm normally a purist.
  6. More likely because they already did Redbeard in Pirates of Barracuda Bay and they wanted to use this as an opportunity to do something new.
  7. Bumping this thread since it was brought up in the 10320 discussion. Is anyone with the skill willing to color the second comic and paste in the translation?
  8. Oh, that's very interesting! I'm famous now. I'm still looking for a volunteer to clean up the high resolution scans I provided. I'd love to be able to make bootleg copies for kids to enjoy. If anyone reading this has the skills to do it, please message me. Edit: It's been so long, I forgot - someone did do the original comic, but not the second comic. I guess I forgot to look into printing it!
  9. It was definitely available in the US. Here's a scan. Edit: Sorry, that wasn't in English. Here's the English version.
  10. You've got to love how the website says, "The gang's all here!" and we're missing Captain Redbeard, Governor Broadside, de Martinet, Will, Spinoza, Popsy... pretty much literally every character from the original comic.
  11. Good catch. The box photo is also just a bad angle. This one is better.
  12. Maybe it's just a bad angle in the photo, or it could be that the new one is wider. Whatever it is, it looks a bit odd in the photo. Hopefully it looks better in person. There are some dark red masonry bricks in the window on the top floor. Check out this full resolution photo.
  13. When I used the slider on the website to compare the versions, I noticed that the new one looks a bit smashed. The original had some great forced perspective. The new one looks a bit like a top hat that someone sat on. I think the highest tower needs to be raised by one or two bricks. Does anyone else have thoughts on this?
  14. I have to apologize because my photography skills are sorely lacking and I don't have a macro lens, or even a tripod to hold the camera steady. This is about the best I was able to do. I don't think these images really capture the color difference or the brush texture very well, but you can see some of the differences here. https://imgur.com/a/mV3Exd5

  16. Also, is the cannon dark bley instead of the dark pearl gray color that piece has been exclusive in for so long?
  17. This is EXACTLY how I was hoping it would he. I even imagined they would bring back the ship, and they did! It also looks like they brought back the rare torso from the Imperial Trading Post. There are two things I'm slightly disappointed with. There's no Redbeard and they didn't bring back the original monkey. The original monkey was FAR superior, not just for nostalgia, but because he was poseable. Are those the large palm leaves or the smaller ones? It's hard to tell. They do look like to me. That would be very exciting if that's the case.
  18. I finally got the new forestmen hats today. They're noticeably different from the last version. The new one is much more opaque. The difference is quite obvious when you hold them in front of a flashlight. The new one is a bit darker and I think it uses a different plastic. I'm guessing that the previous version was polycarbonate and the new one is ABS, but I'm not sure. The new one has a bit of brush texture from the mold. The previous version was more polished. The last version had a very pronounced tube for the feather hole. The new one runs into the side of the hat, so it's a bit of a cross between the original 1990 version and the last version. The anti-stud on the 1990 version was a circle and the last one was a rounded square. The latest version is much more rounded. It's not a perfect circle, but it's not a square like the previous version. The last difference I noticed is the pip mark. The last version had a pretty unsightly pip mark and the new one is almost nonexistent. This new version is a pretty good improvement over the 2.0 version that originated from the Chinese minifigures and it's priced a bit lower. The texture is a bit unsightly though, so I could see people preferring either one. It's a bit of a toss-up for me, but I appreciate the higher quality plastic on the new one and the absence of that gigantic pip mark. I'll probably replace my old ones with this new mold. Edit: I just noticed one more difference. The hole in the feather tube on the last version was a circle. It's actually squareish on the new one. It could be that it holds the feathers better. We'll see. Edit 2: I just compared how well each one holds the feather. The new one has more friction than the previous version, so I think it will hold the plumes in better.
  19. I can see a few scenarios here. It would certainly be possible for them to introduce new plumes in the GWP if they're going to be used in a later set, such as the next CMF or the medieval market. They introduced the forestmen torso in the GWP before we knew it was in 10305. It's also possible that they will just use the black conical helmet since it's currently in production. It's not 100% accurate to the original, but neither was 40567, and that's fine. The third possibility I see is them just using the modern plumes. That would be the worst case scenario in my opinion. Keep in mind that it's not just the plumes. It's also the helmet that hasn't appeared in a set for 20 years. I'd love to see it make a comeback though.
  20. Where are you seeing this?
  21. I'm guessing he's talking about this video, which only has a photo of the original.
  22. I'm talking about the new jolly roger they've been putting on the flags and hats recently. They look ridiculously babyish.
  23. I really hope they redesign the pirates. The recent ones look really cartoonish. I hate the new bandanas and the minifigure skull.
  24. The Lion Knights Castle was announced on June 18. So if the release dates are the same, we probably still have a couple weeks before the announcement, and it's likely that Lego took measures to prevent leaks this time around. There are also rumors of a Majisto GWP. I bet it's coming later this month, coinciding with the announcement... because you know there's no way they'll give us a good GWP at the same time a classic set is released. That's the way it works.
  25. You refuse to buy the set if it's not the exact model you wanted as a kid, but you buy PotC knockoffs? Something doesn't jive here. 🙃 Personally, I would be happy with either. But now that I've seen that sticker, I don't think it bears any relevance here.
