Heroica RPG - Quest #28: The Breakthrough
Waterbrick Down replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
"Do the deed, yes, but I have no idea why. Szalinski and I were about to make magic accessible to all, from the wood-chopper to the bar maid. Only backwards thinking mages who wish to keep their arcane power cloaked in mysticism and darkness would stand against such ease of living and quality of life progress." -
I think this would be better discussed in the Quest Master's Lounge as it is more a fitting topic for there. That wouldn't be necessary plus no one else would get to read them. The questers don't have to do it and they're not going to be policed to do it either, I just thought it might add more to the role-playing aspect.

"Reginald Swisshopper is an entrepreneur he started up one of the most successful garment making shops in all of Eubric Freeport. Given his success, he has quite a bit of capital and as I have directed some of my own clientèle to his business before he was willing to raise up some support for Szalinski and my venture in hopes that his investment might prove good. There are two scientists from Carthago that aided us in the development of the technology, I believe they said they were staying at some inn. Sem's Sensible Investments gave us a loan that covered more than a third of our expenses. Oh and there's that Gurnam chap, not particularly a nice individual, but sharklings rarely are, Szalinski and I don't know where he gets the funding but he has supported over a 1/4 or our cause." "The Eubric Common House is a general meeting hall, almost anyone can rent out the space and it is populated by everything from confrences to round-table discussions to traveling jesters." "Well the machine as you may have been informed runs off of alchemical batteries which by their very nature are unstable and thus require specific tuning of their frequency output when utilized if their spacial parameters are slightly off level the frequency generated may undergo deconstructive interference causing static in the transmission lines leading to power surges. The alchemical batteries supply the static transmogrifiers by which the power is transmuted to a scanning beam of tiny particles which interact with the supplied test specimen that after transform the specimen into an intermediate transubtle state by which the conducer generator can alter the outgoing frequency of particle in tune with the desired "magical" properties of the materials structure. All of the transmission steps must occur in an airless system to prevent contamination of the signal. A single leak in the lines can lead to corruption of the signal leading to transmogrification in situ during which extraordinary quantities of heat may be generated. These are but a few of the delicacies of the instrument, in all it would be fairly easy to sabotage as it was built for simply demonstration purposes and not for commercial viability at the moment. I'd compare it to a magic user, powerful on the inside but processing a frailty on the outside." -

Skrall raised himself to his full height addressing the armored woman with a tone of respect, but not deference, "Heroing is about a steady job as any these days, mam. But I agree with ya that there are many who are only after glory and fame or aspire to some sense of nobility. For me, it's simply a paycheck that keeps the creditors off my back and my wife and kids happy back home. As to yer history, I wouldn't expect ya to know all the lore of the greenskin race either, but I thank ya for sharin' yer story. Now down to business, I can't speak for all of us, but I know these three in my company have proved themselves useful when it came to defendin' Brikbay Fort against an army of Brobic elves and have shown themselves satisfactory fighters and inventors. For myself, I've already put down one rebellion in the northern part of Ennon and led charges against armies numbering 3 times my own forces and achieved victory. I wouldn't say we are necessarily worthy, but we are capable, and if results are what yer after, then we are yer men." -
To those in quests 29, 30, and 31, Given that all of our quests have the possibility of overlapping, I thought it might be an interesting experience to refrain from reading the counterpart quests and in order to keep player knowledge separate from character knowledge. I know that some of you already do this with other quests in general and I will be doing it myself for this special case, but I thought it might make an awesome questing experience for us if we all avoided reading what the other Parties were doing in their respective quests, that is until our characters cross paths in game at least. What do you think?

I think this might have come up with whether a poisoned unelemental weapon still poisons undead. If this is the case with the statuses then I would assume it should apply to the knock back, but I leave it up to Brick Doctor.

"Is Szalinski going to be okay? Do you mean sabotage? But who... Yes I can answer any question you wish. Arguments? Never! Szalinski and I were what made the machine possible. I came up with the theory of the transmogrification process and he made it into a reality. As far as malfunctions, it was a very delicate instrument, there could have been at least several dozen reasons that it went off like that." OoC: Go ahead and continue with any questions you have, it's 3am here so I'll update later on today. -
Great role-playing bit there in Quest 26, I think it would be great to hear more of Gut's backstory in this fashion.

Haldor stood to his feet as the older man slumped against his desk, bruises on his hands and face. "You have my thanks young man, I thought I was going to rot to death in there. I had just finished a meeting with a valued customer and well, tis the last time I forget to feed Cristoph... but where are my manners." The elderly man bowed to the heroes, "Balthazar Bluehood, hydromancer consultant at your service. Say weren't you at the expo earlier today? Dreadful bit of business that was..." -

Skrall strode forward, he had been lost in contemplation concerning the other ogre in the street and had fallen slightly behind the rest of the party. Quickly dispelling the thought Skrall addressed Simbad, "Hail good sir, I think we've got everybody here and we're all set. I've heard yer countrymen are new to the surroundin' lands, ya seem to be adaptin' well. What do ya think of Uland? How's it compare to yer last home?" Skrall nodded to Arthur, a bit eccentric for his taste but he seemed to have a bright head on his shoulders. The rogue was new to Skrall as well as the knight, though he seemed to vaguely remind Skrall of a trigger happy ranger from his early days in Heroica Hall. He nodded to both of them giving a brief greeting, "The name's Skrall, hunter by trainin'. I believe ya accompanied Master Arthur here on his last quest." Skrall pulled his Heavy Crossbow from its back strap and inspected its mechanisms then did the same for the Hunter's Crossbow which he had holstered in a side carrying pouch next to his satchel. "So I understand we're to be puttin' a stop to some rebels? Did ya have any friends that joined up with 'em Simbad?" OoC: Stats look good, one modification though. Go ahead and put the Heavy Crossbow as Skrall's primary weapon which means his power is now 23. I'll indicate in battle which weapon he's using but I'll keep the Heavy Crossbow as the primary for now. -
Skrall hears a soldier clad in the regale of the lion knights mention his name, bidding farewell to Dyric he accompanies the soldier out of the hall. As he sets out on the street he notes another ogre walking through the marketplace a few blocks away but does not have time to indulge his curiosity.

Results of Round Twelve of the Battle with the Bear: En Sabah Nur Frees Docken from the Enchanted Bear Skin Rug Bartholomew Docken Freed by En Sabah Nur from the Enchanted Bear Skin Rug Lord Lawrence Boomingham vs. Enchanted Bear Skin Rug - Damage (Enemy is Stunned) En Sabah Nur vs. Enchanted Bear Skin Rug - Confuse Special Damage (Roar of the Beast) Jess Islanti vs. Enchanted Bear Skin Rug - Special Damage (Maw of the Beast) (Enemy is Stunned) Haldor Skovgaard vs. Enchanted Bear Skin Rug - Extra Critical Hit Nur quickly frees Docken yet again from the belly of the bear and drags him to the back of the Party's line. Boomingham and Jess both ready strikes with their fire imbued blads but are unable to find an opening in the rug's defenses. Nur remembering the problem with the dust, collects the moisture from the air, which is prevalent in the shop which lies across from the harbor, and condenses it in front of the bear's face creating an impenetrable confounding mist. Haldor takes off running in the opposite direction from the enemy and crashes through the unexpectedly flimsy wood paneling. Picking himself up he jumps through the hole with a cry of "Super Haldor " and delivers a devastating kick to the rug reminiscent of a bottle opener and pole-arm. THE BATTLE CONTINUES! The Enemy: Enchanted Bear Skin Rug *Confused* Type: Beast Level: 20 Health: 163/1250 Defense: 2 Special: I. Maw of the Beast- The enchanted rug actually swallows its attacker. However, swallowed players will take half the damage received by the rug while they are Swallowed (i.e. rug takes 30 damage, swallowed player(s) will take 15 damage). II. Rage of the Beast - The enchanted rug does 15 damage to its attacker regardless of row and imparts the Afraid effect to its attacker. *Special will alternate one after another. Nur continues to condense more vapor before deciding to literally drench the beast in a miniature downpour, which while doing so he collects a small pile of gold that spills forth from underneath the rug. Jess, Blohdhurm in hand sinks her blade into the beasts neck ending its existence as steam forms around the fiery sword and the gleam of gold is exposed twinkling in the blue light of the bioluminescent desklamp. "I fail to see the connection young Master Arthur, I've dealt with Wren before and while she takes joy in the advent of war, I'm sure we would have heard from some of our previous contacts were her presence in the area made known. As for the quests, I can see nothin' wrong with 'em. Some rogue lion knights are off stirrin' up trouble in Dastan, the emperors want 'em gone, the established lion knight order want 'em gone and so do we, I can hardly see any reason for conflict with our fellow heroes. Now put yer worries aside and have a drink." Skrall was in a good mood, he hoped to be picked for one of the upcoming quests and he could already hear the gold tinkling in his satchel, soon he'd be able to get the collection hounds off his back and life would be return to normal. Skrall's thoughts turned again to Wren, how had it happened he wondered. Was it a slow fading or a sudden compulsion that had turned her? Was it the allure of fame, or gold, or power? What set her apart from some of the heroes in the hall, they were all after the same thing, well some of them at least, they just hadn't killed everybody in their way to get it, well not yet...

Actually you can only wear 1 artifact (i.e. special enhancing item) per body part and currently the maximum you can equip is 2 on your character. The belt allows you to equip a maximum of 3 artifacts on your character.

Nur casts another earthquake keeping the bear in its semi-conscious state while Haldor for lack of a banister, prepares to jump off the desk, but is unable to retain his footing and rolls to safety before hurting himself. Skrall looked up, "Dyric my friend settle down and have a seat." Skrall motioned to Rone and ordered a tankard of ale. "Now then, what is all this talk of heroes against heroes, have ya read the latest quest requests? What makes ya think Wren has anything to do with 'em?"

Two quick questions, If a Warden rolls two shields in back to back turns does his health quadrouple (assuming he isn't hit in the first round)? If a Cleric rolls Special Guard while a Warden has his Aura up, is the effect still canceled by the Special Gaurd or does the Warden take the effect from the special damage roll regardless of the the Cleric's Special Guard?

QM Note: Alright, so since Haldor is reviving Jess and she will more than likely continue her attack I will put her at the end of the order and continue the battle, if anyone has a problem with this let me know and I will adjust accordingly. Results of Round Seven of the Battle with the Bear: >Bartholomew Docken vs. Enchanted Bear Skin Rug - Special Damage (Enemy is sealed) Lord Lawrence Boomingham vs. Enchanted Bear Skin Rug - Special Damage (Enemy is Sealed) >En Sabah Nur vs. Enchanted Bear Skin Rug - Magnetic Mojo Mirror Damage >En Sabah Nur vs. Enchanted Bear Skin Rug - Hit Hit Haldor Skovgaard Revives Jess with Phoenix Essence Jess Islanti vs. Enchanted Bear Skin Rug - Hit (No Assassination) Docken once again draws back his bow, but fails to find an opening for his arrow. Boomingham likewise, is unable to get in close enough to the flailing bear to land a strike. Nur fed up with the frenzied rug, unleashes a violent miniature earthquake that momentarily stuns the bear and in an interesting turn of events heave up a small amount of gold coins. The pause gives Nur enough time to fire off another earthen spell at the beast further lowering its stamina. At Haldor's kiss, Jess slowly opens her eyes revived and at full strength. Haldor aids the revived Jess to her feet as she once again picks up Blohdhurm and turns with a fiery passion upon the beast, scoring a direct hit above its left ear. THE BATTLE CONTINUES! Boomingham meditates upon whether the bear skin rug would look better in his parlor or his dining room and regains one ether though he is already at full. Nur lucky as ever continues to pour earthen magic down upon the beast as it steadily begins losing its strength. Jess with disregard for her own safety attempts to finish off the beast with one fell assassinating blow, but misjudges the beast in its confusion and is thrown by its thrashing paws against the side of the room where she lays knocked out. Haldor enraged at the falling of his lover pours forth his raw barbaric power sapping energy directly from the enchanted rug into Bartholomew Docken. Skrall nodded at the mage as he took a bite out of the fowl he was supping on, "Only a new feather. I was doin' some target practice outside earlier and thought the old blue jays needed replacin'. It has been a while since our bout in the Hinckwell's forest. I've been in Ennon since then startin' and stoppin' a rebellion all in one quest, but what of you? A little forward with that elven evoker over there aren't ya?" Skrall winked. "Did ya go and do somethin' foolish like gettin' married while I was gone? It would explain the new outfit I guess, most married men always have their wives fussin' over how they look and all. Where's that butler of yours? Did he up and get hitched as well?"

I'm not attempting to turn Heroica into pokemon, I just believe that this is where the opinion that a confused enemy can attack itself is coming from. As to being hit by their own arrow, let's just say the probability of a confused enemy's arrow ricocheting off of something and coming back to damage them isn't outside the realm of possibility. My main argument is that if a hexed opponent can attack itself, then a confused opponent should as well, as the wording is the same for both effects. If the general concensus is that this should not be the case then the bear will just miss, since there are no allies for it to hit.
-
I'm reminded of the pokemon system, where confused pokemon hurt themselves. So if we interpret an oppenent that is hexed may attack itself then from the wording I think we can give the same meaning to confused. In any case, I'll be treating it as it can attack itself should the bear roll damage or special damage, though it won't swallow itself.
