Same here, while it would be an awesome item to have, I can't forsee Skrall ever using it, based upon his expert class decision.

Heroica RPG - Quest #40: The Strivvian Job
Waterbrick Down replied to Scubacarrot's topic in The Heroica Archive
The armored orc was suprisingly fast, dodging out of the way of Skrall's bolt and slicing open Skrall's side with a quick thrust of his blade. The blow tore right through his jerkin, leaving a bloody gash exposing sinew and bone. The Ogre roars dropping the crossbow to hold a hand to his side. As he goes down on one knee, he sees Atramor prop up a floor board in front of them. "Thinkin' about doin' a bit of carpentry are we Atramor? It's a much less hazardous line of work I understand." Ellaria had joined their little group behind the floorboard. Skrall smiles at the druid, which quickly turns into a grimace from the pain in his side.[/i] "Glad ya could join us Ms. Elliria, I was just tellin' Atramor here about the benefits of goin' into wood workin'." The Ogre, let his hand off of his side in order for the druid to work her art. Still on his knee, Skrall gingerly lifted Leojagd from its scabbard. "Atramor, why don't you and me advance on that armored brute and the Captain with this board of yours like a shield of sorts. You swing yer flail below and on the sides and hopefully strike 'em from down there, and I'll cover 'em from the top with Leojagd." So saying, Skrall hoisted his end of the board with one hand, and with the other advanced on Buggerer from the front row. Ignacio stumbles back from his oppenent. "Oh Niron, do not think that I would turn from you to this witch's deities. I shall remain faithful if you would only see me safely from this battle." The distraught sailor continues his attack on Orc C, but cautiously from the back row. -
I agree with this and like it.

How would we still be limited to 4? The only downside I can see to allowing all 6 slots to be occupied is the increase in amount of SP available to everyone. It used to be SP was solely the realm of knights. Taking Skrall as an example, he could have a total of 8 SP just from market place artifacts alone and not have to worry about sacrificing any other bonuses. I'm not saying that this will be a bad thing necessarily, but it will definitely impact how the stats of enemies are crafted especially when all the party members have SP.

One step ahead of you Zepher. Upcoming item idea: Belt of Misfortune: Legwear, player is permanently jinxed, but may equip up to 3 artifacts, not counting the belt.

"Best listen to his majesty, Ms. Nyx and ya'll have to excuse me, I get all my verbiage mixed up in the thick of battles." Skrall ensures that the heavily armored orc was still in his sights before releasing the bolt. -

OoC: Skrall was using Leojagd so his WP and attack should have done a bit more damage. Skrall withdraws from Black Peg. Drawing his Hunter's Crossbow he lines up a shot on Buggerer from the back row. "No need to chance hurtin' yer pretty face on this fella, Ms Nyx. Why don't ya give his partner an introduction to yer art?" Ignacio stands amazed at the Witch's power, so much so that he misses his own attack. "Which of the great deities do yo serve rogue? Apparently they have seen you through." The sailor repeats his attack. -

Skrall unsheathes Leojagd and smiles as he advances on Black-peg from the front row. "Gladly yer majesty." Ignacio stands surprised, he had actually fended the orc off. Inspired he rallies his courage and charges again at Orc Slave C from the front row. "Stay with me oh Neron and I shan't ever chase after another lass 'cept my wife ever again!" -
I've always imagined Raiders at specializing in dealing more damage then all the other rogue-based classes, which by your calculations they clearly do. That is their primary strength, they are the consistant offensive force of the rogues and that is what makes them special. Getting more gold is just a side benefit for the Raider due to the fact that they are rogue-based. Remember the rogue classes still generate more gold than all the 12 other advanced classes. I guess I look at it this way: Rogues = Gold Knights = Defense Barbarians = Offense Rangers = Ranged Offense Mages = Specialty Offense Cerics = Healing Which ever advanced class you choose gives you a secondary strength. Thus: Black Knight = Gold*/Defense Raider = Gold/Offense Assassin = Gold/Ranged Offense Sorcerer = Gold/Specialty Offense Witch = Gold*/Healing *(Yes I know these classes don't have a gold generating ability, but this is how my train of though flows) As you can see there is no Gold/Gold advanced class, because rogues are the only basic class that have that as their strong suit. I'm comfortable leaving Raiders where they are, if they had to change I'd prefer Pie's suggestion. Just remember, Raider or any other rogue-based class, you are still hauling in the gold alot faster than the rest of us. Please take this just as my thoughts on the class and not towards you Scuba, though I am indeed intrigued by how Swils is going to exploit the Raider class. Will do, though the epic is filled with tons of dwarves so I'm not quite sure how I'm going to fit one of the expert classes in, but we'll see.

I love that figure, I've seriuosly got to do more with him at some point. Speaking of doing something, how epic-quested-out are people? Is it too early to propose another long quest in a few weeks?

"I fergot ya chugged that smellin' salts, Atramor. Very well, let's see about this potion." Skrall played with the cap to the vial, while keeping an eye on the Bosun. Ignacio swings his sword in front of him, one eye open, but he fails to see Atramor swooping in from the side out of the other. Before he can engage Buggerer, he has to dodge out of the way of the swinging flail. Rolling away, he assults the nearest orc, Orc B, from the front row. "The gods gave not forsaken me, have at thee you opponent of lesser strength!" OoC: If it's allowed, Skrall is going to consume his Grand Potion if Rufindel fails to heal him and will attack the Bosun if he does succeed. -

Skrall breathes heavily, his wounds bleeding freely. Supporting himself on the mast with one hand, he unholsters his Hunter's Crossbow with the other. "Ms. Nyx, why don't ya leave me with the Barnacle chap this time round, hopefully my bolts will bite through his defenses." So saying Skrall raises his weapon and fires off a shot at the orc from behind the rest of the defending Party. Ignacio decides that it is much easier to hit one's opponent if one does not have his eyes shut. Squinting with one eye open, he assults the armored Buggerer again from the back row. "Neron and Neredice, if you'll see me through this, I promise I won't touch a drop of rum ever again in my life." -
Quest 28 featured this in Nur's side quest, so he might have further thoughts on this, but I like it, but it should probably be used sporadically.

When determining battle lengths I take the average scenario for damage dealt by the party, i.e. if everyone rolled "hit" and multiply that by the number of rounds I want the battle to last, this becomes my enemies' base health. It's a starting point and is by no means a hard and set rule, but it at least gives me somewhere to work from. I thought the 1st battle of your quest was a little too long, mainly due to the amount of SP that the enemies had. You adjusted by decreasing that in the next battle, but you compensated by making them stronger which didn't help. I know battles can be one of the hardest things to balance, but one thing I think that needs to be avoided is changing stats/specials mid-battle. I think the case of the Shambler's Death Note's stats changing toward the end of the battle was unnecessary. Parties plan and strategize sometimes two to three rounds ahead and changes like that can really throw everything off, yes that may be your intention, but it's not something I would encourage for the very first battle. I thought the enemies were unique and the presentation alright, but it was a battle only quest which means the story was in the backseat, something I don't prefer, but I applaud your efforts for trying a concept not often utilized. For future reference: Magic Users: Immunity to Magic Immunity to Element Sealing Drag to the front row Attacks that ignore row Deadly Poison Ranged Attackers: Immunity to Physical Drag to the front row Deadly Poison There are a lot more complicated ways to get around their strengths, but these are the more simple solutions.

"Well now, that wasn't good. Nice try Miss Nyx, looks like we're goin' to have to do it the ol' fashioned way. Yer majesty figure out where yer standin' either in the way or out of it." Skrall unshoulders his Heavy Crossbow and fires off a bolt at the nearest orc, who happens to be Black Peg One-eye the Slaver, from the back row. Ignacio anxious to be safe back in Eubric, unsheathes his sword and attacks the Heavily Armored Orc "Buggerer" from the back row. -

"Now would be the time for that Topaz of yer's Miss Nyx. I don't think those soaked orcs would appreciate a bolt of lightnin' right about now." Failing to find any oil, Skrall contents himself with ensuring he has enough bolts for the upcoming action. -
Same here, but for some reason I still have a bad feeling about this. Given the sodium content of sea water, we could just have Nyx tip them over with her aquamarine and then electrocute them all with her topaz.

Skrall still searches for the torch and oil and if he finds them will start shooting off fiery bolts at the boats. -

Skrall notes the light, "Perhaps was just the sun shinin' off the sea wrong. Now then, black hats, armed to the teeth, no cargo, and no sail, sounds like yer regular orc pleasure cruise to me. But we generally don't go in fer the same type of pleasure as you chaps. No matter, as long as they don't have any mages with of their own, I think we'll be fine, just make sure those burnin' boats don't get too close to cause a problem on our end either Miss Nyx." Skrall looks around for the oil and torch to start loosing fiery bolts at the boats. -
No problem, I'm Boomingham's starting to get some chances to show off that personality trait, but remember Skrall will only take so much bigotry as well before he starts bashing heads in.

Ignoring his desire to give the laughing Paladin a good clocking on the head, Skrall smirked, "Well then, I'll see about helpin' the fiery Miss Nyx in settin' their boats ablaze." Skrall requests a jar of oil and a torch if one can be found, in order to start launching flaming bolts at the slaver's boats. "Captain, if yer wrong about those bein' slavers I'll personally see to it that ya descend the gang-plank to our destination one limb less." Skrall turns back to Boomingham, "Now then yer majesty, shall I fire a warnin' shot past the bosun's ear?" -

Skrall sighs, "Captain, what makes ya so sure they be slavers? Have ya encountered them before?" Skrall was not anxious to attack his fellow brethren, but he was not to be made a slave himself if they were in the habit of enslaving their own kind. On the other hand, perhaps he would be in a more agreeable position if they were only after human slaves. "Yer majesty, perhaps they are only after human slaves and would think nothin' of an escaped Ogre. If that were the case perhaps I could assist in the surprise by jumpin' overboard in order to appear to be escapin'. Then I could lure them on board here with talk of how easy of a prize ya all would make and how yer barely armed and other such untruths."
