  1. You are mangling the English Language for your own ends! A license is required by a manufacturer to produce items in the likeness of another company's or group's IP. Like right now, Mattel has the license to produce Star Wars action figure toys, or Pop! Vinyl has the license to produce collectable figures based on Stranger Things. An original IP belonging to a manufacturer, even with media extras on TV and in film is a Franchise and they give production companies the license to create the partner media. Hasbro owns My Little Pony, they license it to the companies that make the movie, the cartoons, the magazines (the socks, the blankets the chocolate bars...). TLG owns and developed Nexo Knights, Elves and Ninjago. There was probably a contract bidding process required for the animation companies who produce the TV series, magazines and books related to the media. If not for each specific theme, then likely some sort of blanket partnership with LEGO to develop cartoons based on their properties. That, or LEGO approached a media partner to produce these animations etc as they learned the hard way that keeping everything in house costs a lot and is very risky (See, late 90s early 00s for TLG) Honestly, if you have some free time and some Netflix, The Toys That Made Us is very interesting and sheds light on toy production and development (with associate media) from both the toy makers (See He-Man) and the film creators (See Star Wars). But really, refusing and refuting the actual definitions of words only makes your argument fall apart right at the start.
  2. Special Themes probably fits the bill.
  3. Alright, I see a quick reminder is in order: Media focused discussion does not belong here thanks. Sets and what sets might come from the TV series are subjects we can have here. Plot discussion belongs in LEGO Media. Thanks for those who shared the reminders earlier (I was away in London for the weekend so I was a bit busy...)
  4. You know, all this is a moot point if you are buying sets for parts and not to sit them on a shelf to collect dust. There, I said it. The whole "collect" culture where people hoard things to sit around and look at/show off is what is affecting LEGO the most. The toy aisle ten years ago was fashion dolls and their accessories/play sets. Action Figures and their vehicles. Hot wheels/ toy cars and the parking garages/stunt sets. LEGO and K'nex etc (Maybe airfix too). There was always a healthy chunk of pocket money toys like practical jokes and goo/slime rubber balls and little animal figures. Now vast chunks of the toy aisle are given over to Pop Vinyl, Metal Nano Figs, Pint Size Heroes and the like. The traditional is even given over to these, I can find three different licensed Hot Wheels series, in which regular cars have been painted with slogans/imagery related to Ghost Busters, Star Wars and Superheroes. All things more focused on collecting and owning. Not play or imagination. "Oh!" you cry "But a car with Slimer on it will still be played with like any other car!" And yes, yes it can. So can LEGO that has Batman in it. Just because they have Batman, not Johnny Thunder doesn't mean they will not be creating/playing scenarios of their own. TLG is keeping up with the trends and right now there seems to be massive attraction to collecting items related to media properties. Sure, it is not what most AFOLs seem to want, but from what I can tell, AFOLs (who complain the most) simply want the rose-tinted interpretation of the LEGO they had as a child.
  5. Just got to mention though: Ninjago, Nexo Knights, Unikitty and Elves are all original LEGO themes. TLG developed and designed these themes, the media that goes with them was developed to promote the toy. Though it is frustrating how much shelf space is taken up by Star Wars, superheroes and soon Harry Potter again. Those Brickheadz are the most vexing. However, city has been really cool and creative. The Jungle Explorers are superb and the mining subtheme is looking rather cool. I think these have filled in where once you would have had a character driven theme.
  6. Could happen, but it might not close the pirates down completely. Kids in China seem to know their fakes from the real deal (or, at least those asked on the street when an interviewer showed figures). But hey, so long as I get to finish my JSA.
  7. You missed Zeerust (Odd considering your avatar choice ) Dieselpunk cuts of at the 60s, from the 60s to the 80s the future was going to be The Jetsons and things of that aesthetic. I can talk for hours on societal influences on visions of the future and modern adoption of historic appearance fused with futuristic technology. But not here, as this is the Ninjago discussion thread for 2018 sets.
  8. We only allow for posts to be edited, not deleted.
  9. 1166 sets, not too shabby. There is a bit of a low estimate if CMFs are considered as I only added two of a figure if I had more than one of it in my collection. I had to make a list for insurance. I have so much now!
  10. You do love to beat the dead horse don't you? Everyone would appreciate a break from it. Thanks. Careful not to minimod, we have got a report button for issues. So, keep on topic yes? Go make a thread in community for bugbears, horse beating and general unsociable whinging and rattle throwing. Thank you.
  11. You never know, the magazine is quarterly so I might get inspired again @Fletcher Floyd, do you want a tag or should I draw another name?
  12. Aww cute Nijago-kart. Looks like a simple enough design to replicate for other characters too.
  13. Unless there was a website based error message the issue is most likely with your browser/internet connection or equipment. Does it work now?
  14. I think this one is going to be a switcheroo case. You're filled up
  15. Now the votes are tallied and I am pleased to tell you who has won the fabulous first prize and those three who have earned a tag! 1st Place! Turtle Reef by Ryushi Winner of the Elves magazine with two free gifts! Also, feel free to request your tag. 2nd Place Deer in the Forest by Kai NRG Let me know which tag you'd desire. 3rd Place is a joint pair Crystal Mine Under Tree by Vorkosigan AND Cozy fireplace by rodiziorobs You two can choose too! There is one last surprise to come! I added all the entries that did not place into a random selection tool. Fletcher Floyd you have won the surprise tag raffle! Each winner is free to select whichever tag you want. You can ask in here for it. Repeats are fine as everyone has a favourite. Keep your eyes peeled for future chances to get one of those fab tags on your profile!
  16. The layout does allow five adults, there are two beds in one room and three in another, a bunk bed and a single. The top bunk is probably why "under 13" is noted, but we never had any problems before.
  17. The pirate rooms are in the hotel though. I think we stay in the "Wild West" cabins usually.
  18. Now we just need to know what the building contest is!
  19. We've never had a problem with the bunk beds (I do kind of pinch the top bunk though.... So maybe not this year? )
  20. I'm in! Travelling alone and ever happy to share a chalet with others. I would rather not be the chalet responsible if possible.(I get stressy on booking websites...) Just so people know, I get the super early flights in so I usually arrive between 10am and 11am local time!
  21. AWw yeah biker jackets. My favourite thing to collect for Minifigures!
  22. So we are talking a box to have many cards in that will sit on a desk yes? My first points to consider are: Business Type, Company Colours and Location. The type of business can mean you build something that matches the job. Hiring out cars? build a nice car shaped holder. Estate Agent? A LEGO House (complete with a sale sign on the lawn). Memorable and draws the eye. Next is company colours. If you want to go simple, something that matches the business colours would be nice, it could even have the business LOGO included (built or sticker). That would be a more discreet use of LEGO but still something anyone would remember. Location is important simply because of the unfortunate fact people can be sticky fingered. If it is going to sit on your desk away from public/out of team traffic then you're pretty free to have something stupendous. If it is sat out where all can pass by, then there is safety in simplicity. Hope this helps
