  1. Yep - Fantastic review! I was hesitant in committing to this set when first announced, but now see it as a worthy addition to the line. Am looking forward to getting it when released!
  2. Stunning review! I love my 7191, and it sits very proudly among all my other UCS sets. People who come visit always seem to gravitate to this set - after the initial shock of seeing the UCS MF of course! I'm looking forward to the 2013 'update', and hope you will do another in depth review of that set when released.
  3. Hi all - like so many other crazy people, I am currently building a UCS MF via Bricklink. As others have found, the mast rigging pieces are proving VERY expensive - At last check, the average BL price is sitting at NZD$177.01 - or USD$150 EACH! Yikes. Ive seen other EB members use the black ones, or paint them with varying degrees of success. But I thought Id have a go at using a completely different part altogether - namely part # 6020 (Light Bluish Gray Bar 7 x 3 with Double Clips (Ladder)) This part comes in at an average price of NZD$0.12, and I need 8 of them to complete the look, plus a few small mods to attach them to the rear of the MF. (Total of 96c in NZ, or around 81c US). What do you think? Rear view with 4 'ladders' attached. Slight MOD to the centre clips at the rear - pneumatic T Bars do the trick nicely. Another MOD at the other end - a jumper plate to shift the clip up a little bit, so the ladder fits in nicely.
  4. Hi all, I'm currently working on a few MOD's for my UCS SW sets, and am finding that I'm using a fair few of this piece, http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=4599b Also known as the 'tap' piece. Got me thinking - For all you modders and moccers, what is your favorite greeb, or combination of greeb's to employ? While I'm loving the tap, I also enjoy using the 1 x 2 grille tile and the humble 1 x 1 round plate.
  5. Yikes - 31 August?? Thats a pretty long deal - but very welcome. I too will get the Palace Cinema, but will still get my UCS B-Wing from BL, as the NZ price is just too high!
  6. I'd be OK if it were solely a minifigure line. The only common vehicles I can really think of are The Simpsons family car, the school bus and Grounds Keeper Willy's tractor. The most popular Buildings are the family home, Springfield Elementary, Moes Tavern and the Nuclear power plant. I just cant see how this could work well, and within Lego's own guidelines. If it were solely minifigures though, then there are 100's of possibilities - http://thebizzare.com/cool/simpsons-all-cast-pic/ I'd love to get a Montgomery Burns, Kang and Kudos, Comic Book Store Guy and Krusty.
  7. I really do feel for this guy too! Problem is, that B wing is a stupid NZ price on lego.com. I'll be getting mine off BL for sure.
  8. Ha - so true! I wonder how well this was advertised??? Oh well - next time aye? Just been looking at Lego.com, and saw the price for the Palace Cinema at $269. Im thinking thats going to be my 2013 'May the 4th' free shipping purchase!
  9. Just having a look at the winners - there are a lot of repeat names in there! Makes me wish I got someone to enter for me - would have had a real chance! Congrats to the winners though - especially the trolley grab winner! UCS ahoy! http://www.disney.com.au/DisneyChannel/great-summer-toy-grab/
  10. Local warehouse still has a few Jabbas palace ses for $120. If anyone sees the bag end set, please let me know. I already have one, but my 11 yo niece loves it, and I figure it would be a wicked birthday present.
  11. Wonderful article! This should be mandatory reading for every Lego fan!
  12. Wow - some good deals floating around! good luck to those who snap them up! While I was in the Tauranga Warehouses (nothing there sadly), i noticed the S9 figs were priced at $5.99. Yikes! I see they are still $4.99 on the Lego website, so I wonder why the increase here.
  13. Hi all - Im going through my lego parts that I dont use anymore, and have decided to sell on my Lifelites collection. There are 4 Warm white LEDs, 4 Extension cables, AAA battery box, E lite basic box, 4 White lampposts. Also includes some predrilled Light grey plates so you dont have to cut your own plates for subterranean installation. Asking $40. These look awesome with the modulars, as seen in this thread.... http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=58187&hl=%2Banother+%2Bmodular+%2Bscene PM me if you are interested!
  14. Oh man - I just shelled out $290 for R2 a few weeks ago. Oh well.... Also - make sure you read those T&C's for that competition. Its only for entrants under the age of 18, and is limited to $5k per trolley. In saying that though, if you have younger siblings / relations it could be worth it - and $10k of Lego would be AWESOME!!
  15. I'm currently going through a classic town phase, and have purchased 13 of the sets that I missed out on when I was younger. The most expensive one so far has been the 6399 airport shuttle, closely followed by the 2 large harbour sets.
  16. The year is 1989, and the Lego Classic Town theme is nearing is peak. The 6396 International Jetport and 6399 Airport Shuttle have not yet been released, but there were many outstanding sets on retail shelves that inspired and wowed young people at the time - myself included. The 6482 Rescue Helicopter was originally part of the Classic Town Hospital theme, which also included such gems as the 6380 Emergency Treatment Center and 6356 Med-Star Rescue Plane, but was the only set in this sub-theme that boasted the 9V Light and Sound functions. Lego had been releasing many sets across multiple themes that featured this system, which basically involved simple flashing lights and a piercing siren. Seemingly primitive compared to what is possible with todays Mindstorms and Power Functions sets, but still a very cool addition to a town layout - especially in the late 80’s. I initially passed on this set when it was originally released (I was only 12!!), but recently picked up a lovely used set from BL, that had only been made up once and is in virtually new condition. The original price for this set (According to Brickset) was $35USD, and I got my copy for a very reasonable $67USD, including box, inserts and a very crisp set of instructions. Onto the review and images!!! The box - Features the Classic Town layout, with simple backgrounds and a nice clear image of the set and its play functions. I love how the minifigure is waving to the camera, while the patient also manages a pose - but why does he have no pants on?? The Box is (of course), the older 'open-flap' version, which previews a selection of pieces and displays details of the 9V features, along with an image of a very determined looking child. The side of the box shows a play scene where the side of the helicopter opens to fit in the stretcher and patient. The pilot is also helping. The instruction manual is a nice simple booklet, and shows the finished model, plus some alternative builds on the front cover. This is the last page / cover of the manual, showing a rather lovely image of the patient loaded up, and the crew ready to take off. The first page of the manual shows the warnings and details about the 9V system, and the instructions begin with the 3 minifigures and the floor of the chopper. A few pages in, and the instructions are well on their way to revealing this glorious set! Note the simple blue and green backgrounds, no piece call outs and great use of space! So very classic! A close up of the 9V in action! Bib Bib Bib Wiii Wiii Wiii!!!! Right! Time for images of the parts involved in this set. First up, the 9V Light and Sound parts. The battery box, lights, siren and connector plates. Some of the interesting parts in this set. A stretcher with fold up legs, window pieces, and some printed bricks. The red parts... I love those angled hull pieces! The gray parts - note the different wheel types. 2 single axle, 2 twin axle. The black parts. Those 'rocket' pieces were a vital staple in any lego collection!!! Yellow parts. The hinges were a valuable addition to any lego collection! The white parts were definitely the major colour of the set, and included a good collection of plates, slopes, windows and a few fancy parts. Onto the build itself. Firstly, we start with the minifigures - 3 are included in this set - A pilot, a crew member, and the pant-less patient. The helicopter starts with a simple floor plan, but unlike most other aircraft in the Lego Classic Town, it does not have the boat hull pieces for a curved bottom. More on this later.... A few more parts, and we see the landing gear structure and the rear door hinges go on. Next up, some windows, smooth tiles for the opening door and some white plates start the wall sections. Computers and landing gear covers up next, along with the rear section starting to take shape. The next step is a major one!!! The battery box is installed, along with windows and slope bricks to create the majority of the interior. Lovely - time for some yellow and red trim! Time to turn the chopper over, and add the turntables for the rear wheels, and 2x2 fixed plates for the fronts. Aha!!! There are those hull pieces!!! The set is flipped back over, and the engine details and rear roof section are added. Time for a small sub-model, the hinged roof and windows. This is then added on, along with the lights and canopy. The rear engines are beefed up... As too is the front engine - including the siren! The rotors are added on, and the set is complete!!! A nice interior shot of the Helicopter, showing a great place for the medics to put their bag, and access to the Light and Sound switch - super cool! Here we have the crewman loading the stretcher in the back of the Helicopter. And he fits in nicely!!! I love how the handles of the stretcher slot in past the computer, keeping our patient nice and secure during flight. And the crew member can now monitor his vital signs, and have a chat. A top view of the set, all closed up and ready for take off! Rear view, showing the closed stretcher doors and engine detail. Here is our Helicopter at the Victory Speedway, attending a crash of car # 1. Looks like he has no pants on again!! Summary. This set was great fun to build and take photos of - It just epitomizes the Classic Town series so well - everything from the limited colour palette, the no nonsense instructions and cool flip lid box. I will be displaying this set with my airport, but as you can see from my final image, it fits in very well with the other subthemes of that era too. Im not going to give rankings or scores, as we all know they are very subjective, but I will give it a huge thumbs up, and recommend any Classic Town fan to add it to their collection! Oh - And coming up soon, Ill be building and reviewing 6541 Intercoastal Seaport and 6375 Trans-Air carrier! Edit - - - Oh no! thats very embarrassing - I've put the wrong set # on the topic! Can an admin please fix that!
  17. True true, but I am considering getting the Haunted house and the Maersk train - both of which are not available in NZ ATM... And I'm pretty sure the Maersk train will never come to NZ retail, due to the same issues that prevented the Maersk container ships being sold in stores here. Im also getting a few PaB items that are tricky to get on BL in decent quantities.
  18. Lego.com have free shipping on all orders over $120 at the moment until 8 December!!! That's a long time for such a good offer. I even tried it to make sure it wasn't a US only offer, and it went through to the NZ shopping cart as free shipping, so all good!
  19. I was looking at the 'components made in' list for a standard blue baseplate (Set 620, or part 3811), and on the packaging, it lists Denmark, Hungary, Austria, Mexico and the Czech Republic. My question is, how can 1 piece be made in 5 countries? I was thinking that the ABS could be sourced from one place, the dye from another, the mold pressed in another, the cardboard in another, and the plastic shrink wrap in another? I know that TLG have pretty a streamlined production process in place, but how does 1 part need 5 countries for it to come into being? Any ideas or theories?
  20. Nice one Allan! It was a beautiful day up in BoP today too. Shame that snow wont last for long though:(
  21. Heres hoping that Farmers will apply their 20% off new release specials to the LOTR sets - It'll make a substantial difference to people like me who want the whole range!
  22. Yep - plus 1 here! You had me at the exterior! Well done sir, well done.
  23. Has any one got any Classic Town sets they would be willing to sell me?? Im looking for anything from 1985 through to 1991, specifically the harbour kits. PM me if you have something!
  24. I bought this set used off BL later last year, and have not once regretted the price I paid for it ($600USD) The copy I got was in amazing condition, with all box inserts and packaging complete, as well as clean shiny bricks and a mint manual. Its such a great set, and I even prefer it to many of my UCS models. The only issue is as identified in the review - being the space to display it, but it just so worth having out! Great review!
  25. WOW! what an amazing show! It looks really different from the Kapiti show, which is primarily a building competition for younger folk. I'd like to be involved next year - reckon a trip to Chch could be great fun!
