2009 Pirate Set Impressions - the good, the bad and the ugly
Dreamweb replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
6239 - the one with the cannon What I like It's a great army builder - a pirate, a soldier and a cannon The plants are also a useful thing for land-based Pirate MOCs The little slopes on the top of the grey structure - great additions to many sorts of MOCs What I don't like The cannon should have small wheels, like the ones in the old sets - for easier use in MOC ships I'm not too happy about the pegleg - if you use this as an army builder, you'll have too many pirates with peglegs -
Actually I don't think that's him. Bo'Sun Will is a beardless pirate in red clothes, as seen in the comic: http://media.peeron.com/scans/6255-1/2/ He is also one of the minifigs that were added to the comic itself (along with Rummy): http://media.peeron.com/pics/inv/setpics/6....1143399383.jpg And we finally see him as a prisoner in Lagoon Lockup: http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?q=6267_1&v=z

2009 Pirate Set Impressions - the good, the bad and the ugly

6241 (The island) What I like As usual, the minifigs, especially the torn trousers - I think they'd look cute on a girl minifig The new fish piece looks really cool The baseplate - I don't understand all those people who keep bashing it, you don't know if it's a one-piece... And even if it is, I don't mind - I like the dunes, very realistic. The railing pieces - I'm always short of them The cannon, it's good to have another one - although it's badly placed, reminds me of a certain set from the classic Pirate line. But it's still a very useful piece. What I don't like The new pirate flag - looks like some alien's skull to me... The placing of the cannon - see above The catapult, if that's what it is - it doesn't quite fit in there... Looks like Lego is on a mission of putting those silly-looking weapons anywhere they can -
Which Pirate LEGO faction do you support?
Dreamweb replied to Col. Whipstick's topic in LEGO Pirates
The bluecoats vere my first love so I'll stick to them... I remember how excited I was while getting my first Gov. Broadside... The fact that almost everything about him was unique - the face, the hat, the uniform, the plume... And I've always considered the redcoats and Woodhouse a rip-off of the classical bluecoats... But, obviously, I like all the factions, the Islanders being my least favourite. -

6240 (the one with the octopus) What I like The octopus! The spyglass The parrot The cool-looking minifigs The good-old "crow's nest" barrel The box with jewels What I don't like I don't seem to find anything that can be used to propel this raft. The oar looks like it's used for steering, and there's no sail... Strange. -
2009 Pirate Set Impressions - the good, the bad and the ugly

The middle sections look like the old pieces, but the bow and stern pieces are a new thing (no anchor ports for example, the shape is slightly different as well). 6243 (Pirate ship) What I like New hull pieces in a new colour (hey, diversity is good!) The figurehead It comes with soldiers! The girl (has she been kidnapped?) The dark blue boat New parrot The sterncastle - actually it might be the best-looking one since the BSB! The amount and colour of doors and windows plus all the new torsos, hats, faces etc. What I don't like The sails - although maybe I'll get used to them Chains instead of ropes The shark - definitely too cartoonish The stern cannon looks like it's about to fall into the water (however I don't mind having an extra cannon in a set ) Could use one more middle section, looks a bit short Could use one more pirate minifig -
I for one am very happy with the look of the new series. Surely it has some disadvantages, like the ones mentioned by me earlier, but I like the fact that it resembles the old line so much. Such classical approach to a once-discontinued theme is unprecedented in the modern history of Lego. It proves that Pirates are a very special theme for the guys at TLC as well. I knew there would be complaints from some AFOLs no matter what the theme looked like. You just can't please everyone. But hey - so many people wanted it to look just like the old pirates - and that's almost how it looks. On the other hand, if it looked nothing like the old pirates, people would start moaning about that too. Surely those sets aren't perfect, but they're still good and I hope they will get better next year and in the years to come. I for one will buy all of the 2009 Pirates. I'm looking forward to having new torsos, hats etc. for my pirates and soldiers, new hull type for my ship (it's not the same as the old one, at least the bow and stern sections are different!) and so on. One more thing - if you look at the picture of the pirate ship, you can see another ship in the background. Could this be a subtle suggestion that another ship is coming in 2010 or maybe late 2009? A proper Imperial Flagship perhaps? Note that when the humans vs skeletons Castle line first appeared, in the Lego catalogue we had pictures of the new Castle sets and some blurry troll figures in the background - and the next year the trolls appeared...

The Pirate ship comes with 3 cannons if I'm not mistaken... It has room for five, but I wouldn't expect such generosity from Lego these days. The stern cannon doesn't quite fit there - perhaps if it were smaller than the standard and well-known piece, it would look better, but as it is it looks too heavy. But still it's better to have 3 cannons than 2.

Wow. I've been away from home and from my PC for just a couple of days... Now I'm back and I see THESE. Wow again. Not that I didn't expect it. I like the fact that they kept the same flag pattern for Imperial Guards - clearly showing us that they're still the same faction. Their uniforms have changed over the years, but that happens in the real world too. Of course they can be used as a completely different faction by MOCers - even as enemies of the classic redcoats. And that's the beauty of it. I like the new pirate faction - with captain Brickbeard if that's his real name. Not a great name but hey - you can always change it. And I smell a few Redbeard Vs Brickbeard MOCs showing up next year. As for the sets... I'll start with the ship as I've always considered ships the most important part of the theme. I must admit I'm having trouble with this set. When I look at the top half of it, I feel like looking at that ugly 4+ ship again. The sails look cartoonish, and I don't like the chains at all. I don't get it why the guys at Lego refrain from using strings in their sets these days. The bottom half on the other hand looks great. The sterncastle is very nicely done. As for the hull you can see that they used the old middle sections (two of them), but the bow and stern sections are a new thing (no anchor ports, and they seem slightly longer). Overall, not a bad set, I'll probably get it but I'll customize it according to my taste.

That's crazy... I like it very much. My only complaint is that you might've chosen a better band.

Which pieces would you like to see in future pirate sets?
Dreamweb replied to Shadows's topic in LEGO Pirates
I don't know if that has been mentioned, but I'm sure many of us would like to see new, bigger hull sections. About the size of the 4+ Pirate ship but more slender and better looking, preferably in brown (but white would also be cool!). -
That's a nice ship! I like the sails - very interesting solution here. The bow is also pretty and I like the rudder mechanism.
-
How about the cup from this set? Looks like a nice loot if you ask me...
-
I used that quite frequently as gold tabs. It's funny how useful may be something which is not even an "official" Lego piece. Many parts may be used as valuable statues, one example being the yellow bird (Caribbean Cliper's figurehead), and the other example being this:
-
Such an army would definitely be a nice gift for me. I'd really like to have some more Governor Broadside torsos for my captains - I see at least 3 here and I have only 2 right now... And 5 cannons - I could really use those! Not to mention the rest of this mighty army...

Cloth sails printed on both sides, just like in the first ships! No paper sails and no sails white on one side, like in the late ships of the original Pirate theme. Unless they're white on both sides - in that case I'm all for it! -
Is it forbidden on Classic-Castle to admit that you're also a Eurobricks or Classic-Pirates member? I don't post there, so I don't know, but somehow I don't think so. And that - I guess - makes the difference in our view of your new website.
-
Well, at first I thought it's nice to have another Pirate Lego dedicated website, and I even thought I might join them and show them some MOCs of mine (never thought of leaving Classic Pirates though!). However given their somewhat rude attitude towards our site, I think I'll skip this one. Lego is a hobby and such stupid immature competition doesn't quite go together with it. Moreover, my MOCs would violate their terms of use anyway, as almost if not all my pirate galleries on Brickshelf have a picture that advertises Classic Pirates.

They were my least favourite subtheme in the whole Pirate line, but still not bad. I was more into seafaring factions, while the Islanders were - naturally - more stationary. And because of that they didn't have any decent-looking boats. Well, they had the catamaran which didn't look very good IMO. And ships were always the most important thing in the whole Pirate theme for me...
-
Well, while making similar bricks to those made by Lego may not be enough for a lawsuit, I think using their logo is just enough. So I think this is in fact a Lego product, not another clone. However, if I had that much money to spend on Lego, I'd spend it on some real and useful bricks of the right size, not this strange room decoration.

Actually the big sail with Jolly Roger looks like a red version of SES's sail. I think they're customs. EDIT: Sorry, I didn't notice the holes in the big sail, just in the aft sail. It looks like they're based on BSB's and RBR's sails then.
-
I'd rather classify that as a modification (of the BSB) than a MOC... There's nothing wrong with modifications though - I used to make them all the time a few years ago, and I still have my own modified BSB (although much closer to the original than yours).

I had to choose between Lagoon Lockup and Imperial Outpost - as they're both among my favourite Pirate sets. Finally chose the Lagoon Lockup because it looks more "complete" and works better as a standalone building. It also has some nice details, like the window with those red and blue slopes. But the Imperial Outpost is also nice, I like its jail, and it comes with Admiral Woodhouse!
