  1. An "inspired remake" would indeed be something we haven't yet seen in the Pirate line. Perhaps a new version of Eldorado Fortress? Of all the ships out there I'd like to see an updated version of either SES or Caribbean Clipper. As great as BSB was, I really see no reason for another remake of it - we had an almost direct copy in the Legends line and that seems enough for me.
  2. I voted "average". Those Spanish Armada sets are both better for parts (some of which are great) than as actual sets (same goes for Armada Flagship). I like the colors and the green doors are classic. I really have no idea why the whole Spanish theme was so "rushed" - I mean, only 2 real Armada sets, both of which could've looked much better with some additional work. The minifig is great, like all Armada minifigs, and I don't mind the red and blue colours - I always thought these soldiers were supposed to look "rich" - hence the medallions and other stuff we see on other minifigs. So the bright colours are fine here.
  3. Generally, Cross Bone Clipper is more sought after, as it is so rare. I'd definitely get one for parts if I had the chance. But design-wise, the Renegade Runner is certainly the better of the two.
  4. Yes, I forgot about the masts, they're different too. Also, they use different material for sails now. I preferred the old sails much more, and also the new sails are only printed on one side, which is especially annoying if you look at the jib. The one-side print is one of the biggest letdowns of the new ships (Viking longboat from a few years back had this problem as well). Maybe they can do a sort of "inspired set", like they did with the King's Castle, which was said to be a modern version of the earlier 6090 set. Maybe they'll do something like that with one of the classic ships? I also agree I have no idea why they re-released Red Beard Runner which was one of the worst ships ever. SES would've been so much better, or even Caribbean Clipper, which was a great ship IMO. Hey, I'd choose a brand new CC over a brand new RBR any day!
  5. I have some experience in making websites and especially newsletters (I make regular newsletters concerning by band - see Community and Any musicians in here? thread). I think that's pretty similar to writing news or informing about MOCs on a blog. And Pirates have been my no. 1 Lego theme practically from the very beginning of my interest in Lego. And I have almost 24h a day Internet access so availability is not an issue here. Of course I will not mourn if I'm not chosen, but the task does look appealing to me. And good luck to all of you who are interested in it as well!
  6. I remember an old computer game called "Skull & Crossbones". Your characters were two pirates, and one level was about you fighting ninja warriors. You can see the game here, with the pirates vs ninja level beginning at 5:32
  7. Actually I don't like the new Jolly Roger pattern at all, so I'm happy it's just plain black - that way it can be used for an imperial soldier as well. I hope the extra dress is in every set. If not, that would mean some of us will be lucky to get two, and some will not.
  8. I'd like to give it a try as well! Sounds like a good way to spend even more time with Lego Pirates related stuff... Plus, finding the best MOCs and other cool stuff and showing it to the others sounds like real fun!
  9. Absolutely useful! They're a great source of valuable information, and an easy way to find what you're looking for! I use them quite frequently.
  10. Considering they've changed their palette since the release of SES (new grey, new brown), it would look significantly different if re-released. Also, they use new molds for bow and stern hull pieces now, and it's hard to tell whether they still can make the old ones. And using new molds would force them to make significant changes in the ship's design. Therefore I doubt they'd re-release SES. However, I think I'd still buy it even with those changes - more variety is good! I just don't think that would happen.
  11. Thanks for the comments. Episode 23 - Get To Know Them is up. As said before, it ends the story arc started in episode 21 and explains a few things. However some action is included this time - especially the duel scene, I really loved making that one, it was a lot of fun. Very special thanks to Captain Green Hair who allowed me to use a picture of his MOC - The Yellow Thief, I asked him about that some time ago and then I had to take a break in making the comic, hope he didn't change his mind during that time. New episodes are currently in preparation, including a two- or maybe three-episode long story which will be almost pure action and not that much dialogue in contrast to the recent episodes - we'll see how it turns out though.
  12. I think the chef's torso from 8398 City Impulse set looks good as a sailor's/pirate's torso, and perhaps even better as an Imperial torso (for a possible new faction of whitecoats), as shown on the right minifig.
  13. True, also their targetting ability is practically non-existent with their erratic flight path. For me only the aesthetical aspect is what matters and I'm only concerned if the cannons look good in a set/MOC. The new 2009 cannons for instance have a nice look, but I couldn't care less if they are shooting or not. In fact I don't think I've fired any of the new cannons even once, just to see how they shoot. I simply don't care. It's nice to know your father was from Poland BTW, he must've travelled a long distance...
  14. I think it was because of some toy safety issues. Anyway, what bothers me more, is why are so many AFOLS making such a fuss about it? "I have non-shooting cannons, booo". Come on, how many of you are actually going to shoot them? I'm from Poland and (like all Europe I guess) they only sold shooting cannons in here. I have like 50 shooting cannons and TWO non-shooting ones. The ones with this cool emblem on the top. I got them with a used Imperial Flagship once (the classic one of course, not the new 2010 set ). I think they look way better than the shooting version, and I wish I had more of them to use in MOCs - they'd look so great, especially in imperial MOCs. The shooting aspect doesn't bother me at all. In fact I didn't like shooting them even when I was a kid, but maybe that's just me. I really don't see why some people are making such a big deal of it.
  15. 28. Started collecting Lego exactly 20 years ago.
  16. Actually most of my ship MOCs are meant to last - I hardly dismantle them, although it has happened several times in the past, mainly with my early ships which were pretty lousy... But all the ship MOCs I've built for the last 4 years (more or less) are still in one piece, although some of them have gone through modifications, like this one. My general rule is to build new ships without dismantling old ones - that's why I don't make them very often, as I don't recycle bricks used for my ships, I need new bricks each time and needless to say, sometimes I cannot find or afford the necessary pieces.
  17. Among sets - definitely Caribbean Clipper. I got it for Christmas in 1989 and kept it assembled for some time, then dismantled it, then after some time rebuilt it, dismantled again, and so on over the years, but for the most time it was assembled, standing on my closet, rather than being in pieces in a box. Then I finally sacrificed it for MOCs some time around 2000 I think. Among MOCs - also a ship, HMS Progress, built in 2004 and still present, though it has undergone some modifications over time.
  18. I also must say 1989. Mainly because of the BSB, Forbidden Island and Eldorado Fortress - those are all time classics. Plus we had a ship for soldiers, absent in 2009 (the new 10210 Imperial Flagship is officially a 2010 set so I don't count it). But I must say that the minifigs themselves were better in 2009. Also, sets in 2009 had lots of various cool little accessories, like fish, crabs, spyglasses and all that stuff that Lego hadn't produced yet 20 years ago. All in all, both years showed us great Pirate Lego, but 1989 is my year of choice (and the nostalgic aspect is present here as well).
  19. Three years after its premiere, I decided to go back to this topic. The reason I did it is because my biggest ship so far - La Victoria - got slightly revamped recently, and pictures of the upgraded version are here. I always thought that the sails in the old version were too small and the ship looked slow because of that. This has been changed and I guess it looks more propotional now. The figurehead has been altered too, although it still has the KK2/Viking swords, as I actually like them in here, but now it's definitely a female. Anyway, here's the upgraded version: I've also changed the first post, adding new main picture and some new deeplinks. The whole updated Brickshelf gallery can be seen HERE. Note that the interior pictures and some close-ups are left from the old version, as they depict areas that were not changed during upgrade. In the future I'll have to take new photos of some of them as well though, as they tend to be a bit blurry - while taking them 3 years ago I had much less experience with a digital camera. The tour of the ship from the first post in this thread still works, so feel free to check it out! It shows some details and locations on the ship, like sleeping quarters, galley, brig, mess hall, captain's cabin and so on - I wanted this ship to be as accessible as possible.
  20. Too bad I can't find pictures of that other ship anywhere... I'm pretty sure it was shown here but it's not in the ship MOC index (nor is Dodelijk Klompschoen, the one I linked to previously). It was a very impressive and huge vessel. Anyway, about the ship from the first post - I think the builder made the whole hull too tall, making it look out of proportion. The curved back shape of the 4+ hull doesn't really go well with adding big extra structures on the top of its sides, it looks silly because we have the tumblehome and then some walls going straight up - like here. I think the hull should end right where the tumblehome ends. I wouldn't complain about the colours though - considering the builder had to work with a red hull, I think he chose the other colours to fit it pretty well.
  21. I'm either this very cool 1976 locomotive: (it even has my user number written on the side! ) or this... whatever it is. A 1964 set! But the locomotive is really nice so I'm quite happy with my number...
  22. I wouldn't agree with that. I've seen at least two very good MOCs which used that hull. One of them can be seen here. The other one was a very big flagship with a few middle sections, but unfortunately I cannot find its pictures anywhere right now. The hull has a great potential if used wisely.
  23. It was uploaded by Brickshelf user deebostoker. Gallery Not many pictures here and they\'re quite big. Anyway, tell me what you think about it?
  24. It's a great set. I remember seeing it in a shop back when it was released, and at the time Lego was a somehow forgotten hobby of mine - I mean, I still had the bricks, just didn't use them too often, and even when I did, I didn't buy any new Lego, just built with the old stuff I had... I wouldn't exactly call it dark age, but it was pretty close... Anyway, I saw it and thought it would be fun to have it, but that was it - I went home, preoccupied with other things. But the set was still on my mind somewhere, and after 1 or 2 days I returned to the shop and got it. I built it and thought it was excellent. It was the first brand new set I bought in quite a long time, also the first time in a few years that I followed building instructions... So I have a lot of nostalgia for this set, and still think it's an amazing set with very nice minifigs.
  25. All new Pirate sets (except all those game-sets, calendar and other non-standard sets, but I did get the Pirate Construction Kit or whatever that was called). Some of the smaller ones I bought in multiple quantities (especially Cannon Battle and Solder's Arsenal). A few impulse sets - City, Castle, Space Police, I'm a big fan of this impulse stuff. An old NBA set I found in a shop - I bought it for dark-skinned minifigs. Can't remember anything else at the moment, Pirates were my main target this year... Sorry, no thumbnails, but there isn't much point in adding them I think.
