Crap, I have to finish editing my article. It's coming!

The ones that blink on startup are v1.1, they fixed some bug in v1 (which don't blink). V2 are labeled v2. http://www.philohome.com/pfrec/pfrec.htm First paragraph.

Finally applied some decals. I guess it's done. Not terribly happy with the exhaust stack, but can't think of any alternatives. -
I saw the cargo train while clearance shopping at a Walmart yesterday. $199.97.

Whipped this together real quick for you. I think you can infer the rest from this photo: After the brackets are just a bunch of headlight bricks. Note, this is a very specific solution to a very specific problem. If you don't have a motor back there, it will be immensely easier. Let me know if you need more detail.
-
I can show some better photos of mine if you're interested. I had trouble because I had an L motor in the back. Would've been a lot easier without it.

I too have taken to cutting off the very end of my Technic axles to keep the gears from falling off.

The thread could be neat to watch, although it will become disorganized if there are several people posting at once. Your locomotive looks good so far. With 5 wide, you can do sneaky snot work to hide a battery box ;) Are you planning on something like that? I'm planning on making a few more of mine with different paint schemes.

Nice work with the tiles, how'd you attach them in the round? bar down the middle with clips or something? The droid arms on the trucks on the tender look very fragile, is it functional or for display only?

I use Codefox's open source bluetooth controller with some custom wheels and electronics to pull power from the track. If I am dilligent enough I can run multiple trains on the same loop, but that requires constant attention.
-
I can also whip up a couple PCBs if anyone is interested. I bought the parts for 12 by now and have only made about half. As for the names, Android lets you rename paired BT devices, but for some reason the new names are not showing up in BricksTer.

I sold a used one on eBay recently for $110. The one without the light and train motor.

Thanks! The weight sure helps. That's 1.21kg for you metric folks. -

Traction actually isn't too bad. That bridge it slows down over rises 5 plates over 3 track lengths from the surrounding track. -

The data sheets I'm reading show very low resistances. I asked a couple companies for samples. We'll see if any respond. I just gave regular rubber bands a shot but the shape of the wheels cause the rubber bands to come off quickly (within 20 seconds). The wheel isn't flat, its sloped outward. I'd need to put a groove in each wheel so the rubber band would stay put. I supposed I'd have the same issue with conductive bands too.... One company I contacted sells sheet rubber with an electrically conductive adhesive backing. -

Unfortunately, due to the way the bogies are geared, the drive gears on the axles are on the same side of the truck. The gears block the pickups from being mounted next to them, post 29 has a picture that explains better than I can. So each bogie can only pull power from one side of the track. Currently trying to get some conductive rubber orings or strips. I have some Microscale O gauge water slide decals I will be putting on. I bought the incorrect decal kits at first, they were for the new dark blue/yellow paint job rather than the old grey/blue/yellow scheme. They don't sell exactly what I need, so I'm going to have to combine multiple kits. -
flickr on a mobile device is terrible. Imgur is much better designed for simple image uploading.

Looks great! I've built ... 6? of the controllers so far. Enough that selecting a specific one in the app to connect to is a guessing game.

Ran in to traction problems when the center axles were taking most of the weight. I replaced the center axles with tubing and let them float in the axle hole. Even with the fix, it still doesn't have near the traction of stock Lego wheels though; it slips when pulling more than 4 or 5 wagons. Apparently conductive elastomer rubber o rings exist and I'd like to get my hands on some. Can't really find any that are commercially available though. -
That's pretty slick.

I'd recommend using the 2 x 4 x 2/3 curved bricks you've already used, but continue round in a full circle with them. To get details in, you can use 11477 http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=11477 and 15068 http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=15068 and cheese. It'll yield a boiler that is about 5 wide, which is the perfect width for a 7 wide locomotive.

Looks great, love the brick built plow. I might look in to adapting the plows on my EMD to something similar. The Lego plow buffers are too small for a 7 or 8 wide locomotive. How is the front windshield held in place? LDD makes it look like it's floating.

I'm still waiting on my custom wheels with technic axle holes to come in, should be some time this week. I've tested the the same wheels with round axles (held gears to the round axle with hot glue) and it was able to pull my train no problem. My only concern with the new wheels is that the flange is slightly different and will only work on switches if the wheels are perfectly spaced. The wheels are from here: http://shop.osorail.com/product.sc?productId=2927 -

I had to completely break it in half to do this. Still missing that last clip at the top. Takes curves and switches no problem. Making it longer let me make it a lot stiffer. Found a good use for a 6x6 tile. 48 studs long now. -
