10283 NASA Space Shuttle Discovery Discussion

Apologies for the hostility. The box art, much like the sticker-vs-print debate, is a tired subject. You didn't read what I typed and instead replied as if it somehow confirmed your bias. It did not. Saturn V sells because it's an excellent model at a fantastic price point. It got great reviews and the word-of-mouth has been very positive. Box art had nothing to do with it. Honestly, I'm kind of surprised they didn't reissue it in the black box art although surely a cost analysis played a large role in that. It's fair to have differing opinions, in fact my opinion of the black box art is probably very similar to yours. However, they're trying to attract new customers this approach is what the data told them to do.- 310 replies

Yeah, I see your point with certain sets like Sesame and Winnie the Pooh and I don't necessarily disagree. Something we gotta remember, shortly before this art change, Lego surveyed adult existing and potential customers regarding their products. They asked about interest and buying habits as adults and the confidence when buying what most consider a toy for themselves. The current box art concept is the direct result of that feedback, as is the 18+ / Adults Welcome branding. So while we, as existing AFOLs, don't particularly care for the black box art, Lego isn't as concerned with us. They're trying to attract new adult customers and make new AFOLs. For anyone to dismiss that as dense marketing is naive. I don't prefer the black box art but ultimately it doesn't matter that much to me...I don't display or save the boxes.- 310 replies

For all the reasons why Saturn V sold, and continues to sell, I can't imagine box art would be very high on the list.- 310 replies

Can confirm there is no Ulysses set in US VIP rewards. The coin is live for 1150 points and has been since 6 or 7 pm eastern time. Server was super wonky and took several refreshes in order to load. I even saw a queue screen for a bit followed by several Emmett 404s.- 310 replies

The 2 x 2 curved slopes aren't currently produced in pearl gold, nor the drum lacquered metallic gold, so unless they have plans to use that color into other sets it probably would be cost prohibitive for a promotional set.- 310 replies

I agree. However I like how the signage matches the Hubble and the extra detail bits should be easy to add (while fully understanding it's disappointing modding is necessary).- 310 replies

I hope it'll be more impressive than that but you're right...it'll probably be a polybag or some such. We'll know soon, i guess.- 310 replies

I'm really anxious to see what the Ulysses probe looks like as it'll probably determine how quickly I'm grabbing the shuttle set. I'm hoping the set is the full payload and not just the probe itself. Edit: I've been banking points and haven't used any since the change to the new format. Will the VIP transaction be separate from a lego.com purchase? I hope they limit to one set per account...if not, the resale scumbags will be all over these.- 310 replies

Lego City 2021 Rumours, information and discussion
CDM replied to Powered by Bricks's topic in LEGO Town
I understand that and without getting into an off-topic societal rant I think that's part of the problem. For years the police theme existed as a thing, same with the fire theme. Police vehicles, motorcycles, a helicopter, and an HQ, maybe a boat...all without a prepackaged narrative. As a parent, I'd like to see a return to that, specifically without the crook aspect. -

I hope this is the first step to a move beyond the constant adversarial theme between crooks / criminals and cops. It's unnecessary and, in my opinion, inappropriate for the target audience. There's no need for a prison transport or a SWAT vehicle. I don't have a problem with there being a police theme but I'd rather they concentrate on the public servant aspect than chasing criminals. -
FYI @Alexandrina it looks like things are back to normal on Brick Link.

OK thanks. I wasn't sure if it was a browser issue or what but it seems to be on the back end. Hopefully it's resolved soon.

Anyone else having issues with the BL website this morning? I can't get details to load on individual parts pages.
-
Thanks for the suggestion, @zephyr1934, I'll add that to my list of tweaks. Also looking at modifying the steam chests to make them more realistic / substantial. I'm waffling on powering it so negotiating curves isn't really a concern, more of a curiosity. I built this as a display piece and that's how it will live most of the time. I may experiment with some lettering prints as well. Interesting resemblance, @Man with beard. I didn't intend on replicating an existing locomotive, just taking the Emerald / Scotsman and adapting some American elements, but I may use that as future inspiration for changes.
-
A few weeks later than I'd hoped but here is the physical model. Gonna live with it for a little bit before making any changes. I want to add some mechanical greebling and maybe add power and lights so long as it runs curves (which I haven't yet tested).
-
Another great one. The subtle taper at the nose is really well done. The gray piping...is that Lego official? I ask because I'm interested in finding substitute piping for future MOCs.
-
I wasn't familiar with this locomotive and had to look it up but, wow, you nailed it. The access ladder is a bit large at the front but otherwise this is a stunning rendition of a very unique looking engine. I love it.
-
You may be right. I mistakenly thought my drivers were the XXL but are in fact 37/30mm. My apologies.
-
I would think so. Lego R40 tracks are unrealistically tight and it should work on that. Anything with a larger radii would be fine. I may get some track out this week to test a build of my own. I'll play around and report back.
-
So long as your leading and trailing bogies pivot you should be able to negotiate Lego curves just fine...do you have a setup with track curves tighter than that?. You may have to tighten up your main drivers so the blind wheel overlaps the flange slightly. This results in axles 5 studs apart. I'm in the middle of a potential move and my track is packed away so I can't test it. Does this answer your question?
-
The last of my current Bricklink orders arrived yesterday so I'll probably finish this build this weekend. In the meantime here are some better renders: The second image better illustrates what I mentioned about the trailing bogie and how the coupler still aligns with the cab like the original model. This helps keep the tender tight to the locomotive. I also made the steam cylinders larger even though they might interfere with the steering on the leading bogie. If I add power to this I may have to modify or go back to the original arrangement. Another mod was the smoke stack...the Emerald Night stack is far too tall for my taste. I used an up-side-down hose cone held in place by a bar and 2x2 round brick. I'm planning to add some gauges and whatnot to the cab but I haven't bothered to model that. Thanks @zephyr1934 and @Dorino for the comments. I think I'm going to stick with the dish for now. I'm not opposed to adding studs but the 6 x 6 round plate is a little much for my taste. I like both the green and red color schemes (in fact my first draft was red and black) but I was going for an American look, which is also why I ditched the wheel humps. I think I may tweak a few things on the physical model, mainly adding some minor greebling and playing with the deflectors. Also the more I think about it i'm more and more intrigued by adding Powered UP, even if I never run it. Being able to add power without the complication of an IR receiver is really nice, even if the system has other flaws.
