(Almost) done with wings and flaps/ailerons: Sorry for poor pictures - it was a late night :) And this is how the whole thing looks like: (Flaps removed here, as they need to be corrected a bit) CG is a bit out of desired point and front strut happened to be shorter than needed. Still much to go... And, well, something about the tests :))) In fact, (and this is rather expected, why pretend?) test bed is far from perfect. Friction is too high when exposed to drag force. I will probably refactor it with wheels or something and try again. There is *some* lift, but I can't be sure yet if it surpasses a checkpoint (by compressing shock absorbers @60kph, which is kind of predicted by some simulation software) That's all for now. -

Well, I really think that optimizing drag is little out of my scope now :) There's no way for this thing to have any good performance. Point is to not break down, accelerate, not break down, take-off, not break down, climb a bit, not break down again, make a circle, approach and land and finally not break down :))) Then we can turn back to optimizing :) -

I was talking about force, delivered by miniLA. But frankly, I can't get it. My different rough (and not so professional :) ) calculation shows that for aileron of chosen size (24 mm x 192 mm) at speed of 80 kph and deflection of 45 deg the deflecting torque on the aileron hinge would be somewhat from 2 to 4 N * cm. However, I pretty well know such recommendations about servos :) What am I missing? Is that much force is being lost in linkage? Is there so much over-provisioning? Assumption for operation at airspeed of some 200 kph? Please enlighten me :) -

I've found some of your specs :) http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=73936&st=50#entry1486060 According to this, yours have wing area about 23 dm2. Mine about 31 dm2 with wingspan of 1648 mm. -

Poor man's airfoil test bed :))) Going to secure it on car's roof and drive around. Luckily I have sliding sunroof to monitor this thing. -

Ha-ha, sarcasm detected :) Well, *some* tests were made, but you convinced me to make more. Thinking on setup. Flaps are operated via mini-LA. With, say, 10% of efficiency of mini-LA, there should be about 8 N*cm to deflect the flap. Seems enough to me. Ailerons are on direct drive - there's no space for M-motors in the wing. Torque on ailerons should not be that much on speeds up to 80-100 kph. -

Well, 500 g is a bit exaggerated. There are several commercially available models with comparable wing area that weigh about 3000 - 3500 g, so I'm of course out of typical envelope, but not that far. Airspeed should compensate this, however, making handling harder. And as it was said in very first post, almost all parts are glued except some covering for allowing to assemble and service some inner parts. -

Potentiometer for control surfaces integration. Extensive use of a file makes it possible to fit it into 1x1 space :) -

Thank for support, guys. I hope this thread does not make anyone upset because of all that non-TLG stuff, however, while it is here I''m going to keep posting my progress. Regarding weight - it should be about 5000g and I expect stall speed to be around 40kph. I'm still not sure if undercarriage will survive it. If not, I'm going to revert to plan B - much simpler design, like biplanes of 20-30s, with single prop, no-retractable undercarriage and fuselage made of technic panels. Actuall I should have started with it from beginning, but it was so sudden and now I have what I have :) Micromotors and their speed - when I tried aileron control (there is a video somewhere above in this thread) it was not very fast, but I used conventional square 9v battery for this and connected to ESC (with BEC, for powering receiver and servo circuit board) it's voltage dropped to about 7v. Main batteries have voltage of 14.4 and, say, 13v under load and this is about two times more than 7v so motors should operate faster than in video. If this would not be enough, more little and light batteries could be installed for this only circuit, up to the level micromotor could sustain. -

Well, the project is not dead yet though moves very-very slowly :) Finished the right wing and re-designed flap deployment mechanism. Some more photos about it (missing half of the flap, aileron and some space between it and rest of the wing, now filled but no photo yet). -

Well, though this thread is almost dead, I have some new vitality for it. I was waiting for my last order with motors and batteries 3+ months since February and it finally arrived. Then it took some time to actually do something. Main thing I'm happy about is that new batteries and ESC fit into wing root: two more: So, it still goes :) -

Very nice :) In some older times I had Moskvich 2140, which is pretty much the same car :) And in even older times my family had Moskvich 408 which is the very same. -

I once made following experiment: typical axle in liftarm hole was loaded with ~1 kg and spun @ 5000 RPM for 30 seconds. It has marks of heavy wear when I tried this without lubrication and looked ok when greased. 1 kg is rather high load, however I did not tried it without applying any load or at smaller loads and longer times. And this is where real shock absorbers (capable to stop oscillations) would come handy :) Great model.
