Heroica RPG - Quest#66: WANTED! Steerpike the Poisoner
Zepher replied to Sandy's topic in The Heroica Archive
Bomingham nods at the end of Arthur's tale. He had heard bits and pieces from Hoke, Thothwick, Nyx, Skrall - many heroes before, but he had never actually listened to much of it. "Thank, boy-o. I'll see you on the other side. Stay safe, don't die." Boomingham accepts the gloves from Arthur before wandering back over towards Nyx, but stops first to pat both Sorrow and Nagure on the backs. "Stay safe, chaps. Keep the boy Arthur alive, keep him in your sights too." Boomingham returns to Nyx's side as Patricia assigns groups. Boomingham looks long and hard at both Thothwick and Arthur as Nyx speaks of them both. "I am glad that Thothwick is dependable. He looks able to take care of himself, and, as you said, kindness counts. He has shown me nothing but respect. I trust I will enjoy leading him more than I did leading our dear Atramor." Boomingham chuckles. "As for Arthur, well, we will hope that he lives and protects the guests. Luckily, if anyone makes it past him or the young recruits... they'll have us to deal with." Boomingham offers his arm to Nyx. "Let us go mingle with the best that Eubric has to offer. Thothwick, I'm afraid you'll have to find your own date." Boomingham leans in and whispers in Nyx's ear. "If there is any trouble, I would like you at arms length. You may need to distract any assailants with fire while I draw my sword. And you'll also have to forgive my dancing, I'm out of practice, but quite good if I get into the swing of things." Boomingham finally turns to Patricia. "Captain, I will say no more to you until the night is through, but I appreciate your attitude. Our words mean nothing until we bring results, and so I take my silence until results I offer. And I will offer results." Boomingham leads his party to the ballroom. -
So excited to go respond to everything in 66. And look who Patricia trusted to put in charge. Agreed! The Gods are perceived by different people in different ways, assuming they exist. They are any type of shoe you want! They're your's! I don't want to force you to dance a specific way. A cookie?! Go do your homework. He also added four damn NPCs. I think this is the first quest the number of allied NPCs outnumbered the PCs. Well, I had said no when Endgame originally asked... but I think we all want to see you eat your computer. And yeah, no doubt we'll keep an eye on this... rising star....

I think he may have been gifting the mask to Tarn.

Heroica RPG - Quest#66: WANTED! Steerpike the Poisoner

Boomingham raises an eyebrow at the young wizard. "I will keep an eye on Nyx," he promises. "I'll probably keep two eyes on her. One to protect her, and one to protect us." Boomingham clears his throat and looks at the Sorcerer seriously. "Listen, boy. You have a lot to learn. Dying is not penance. Dying is weak. We shed our past, we move onwards. Only positive actions right past wrongs. Dying won't bring peace to anyone but yourself. Don't be a coward. You have much to do, still." Boomingham grunts a little guiltily. He realizes, suddenly, that while he and Nyx know each other fairly well.... "Who is this man who she loved on this last quest?" he asks Arthur suddenly. "Who is this madwoman Wren? I have heard bits and pieces of both her and her allies, but- Nyx is fierce. She doesn't discuss her weaknesses often, and while they're few and far between... I ought to know." -
But actually, he's ten times better than old Arthur BECAUSE he was Chaos Nut Arthur for a while. A character who has been to hell and back is always more interesting, no matter which direction he goes. Flipz chose a flipping awesome direction - suicide and duty bound. It's a great mash-up, and knowing what we know about him- its just great. Its like when a character does something character changing at the end of a television season, and then you wait a whole summer to see what happens, and they come back and give this fresh of breath air to the whole program by being different, but you still have all that cool background knowledge on them. Just totally digging it.

OoC: Sadly can't be 22 1/2 levels. I'm a nice round 22! Also, you're using the older Boomingham picture. Boomingham chuckles at Sorrow's assessment of their enemy, and nods thankfully to Thothwick for his endorsement. "I haven't ever actually quested alongside Thothwick," Boomingham says to Nyx, who, as always, is within earshot. "He has always treated me with great kindness and respect, but I don't know how he holds up on the battle field. What do you think of the chap? You don't look too keen on the young mage chap either." "It all depends on what happens today, little lady. Prove your worth, and we'll be fast friends." Boomingham watches with interest as Nyx intiminates the Knight, older in years, but younger in experience. Boomingham leans over to the young knight and whispers in her ear. "She's right about the Yeti, he's an aimable chap. Lady Nyx, on the other hand, is more than likely to light you on fire. You should see the way she bats around Atramor." He winks. Boomingham guffaws. "Well, hopefully no one will be giving their life to ensure anything tonight. We've crossed paths before, mage. I'm exctied to see you show you're stuff. Looks like you're already serving the group. It isn't a bad idea." Boomingham hands his extra scroll of weakening off to Grimwald. "Keep it safe, gnome, and use it as best you can." -
It does not, unfortunately. Think of it as an adding system: ineffective + neutral = ineffective. EDIT: Etzel, what a rockin' build! Awesome. I love the mini door within the big door.
-
That's most people's reactions.
-
Haha, no, I don't expect that quick of a result. Though I think you may be putting too much weight on Boomer's love of Patricia. He wants to seduce a number of people, Patricia is one of many.
-
Maybe she'll see past it and accept that a hero who gets the job done is better than most (of the ones she's seen). OR maybe he'll reject her and let Steerpike go. I guess we'll have to see.

Boomingham lowers his voice and talks to Sorrow more quietly, keeping his eyes on Arthur and Patricia both. "Well, unless the poisoner is carrying a significant amount of gold, the two of us my be out of luck, but yes, thank you for your kindness, I will give you that 75 gold when it comes into my possession." -
Psh, you think Boomingham cares much for secrets? He doesn't seem the sort.

Boomingham offers an elaborate bow. He walks up merrily to the Captain and shakes her hand. Barty is no where to be seen, for the time being. "Patricia, it has been too long. I'm sure you recall my friend Nyx and I from your search for the Strivvi guards. Though we had to flee the city before finding them, a fact I lamented and violently argued against, I can assure you that this time, we will prevail. You need not fear. I have protected Eubric against the likes of the Bluehood, I will not allow anyone to fall to someone as cowardly as a poisoner." Boomingham turns to Sorrow and Nagure. "I can trust Thothwick and Nyx to stay by my side and do the right thing. I hope after our recent adventures, I can count on you for the same." Boomingham nods also to Arthur. "I, for obvious reasons, assume that you will not betray the good Captain and I. It is pleasant to see you again, boy." Finally, Boomingham surveys the new blood. A pirate looking man, reminiscent perhaps of Atramor or Guts. A young female, a silly looking gnome. He pulls out his handkerchief and mops his brow. "You three must be new to the city, or at least new to the Hall. My name is Lord Lawrence Boomingham, Paladin first class, King of the Desert, Slayer of the Bluehood, Champion of Pseudo. I will tell you this; if you betray us to the Wolfgang, as some others have done, Nyx and I will have your heads." -
Wish I had the parts, he's another guy I'd feature if I had the chance!! Exactly! The Dancing Clocktower of Doom was my original name for the quest, but then Gary or Gerry or Guppy (whatever his name is) insisted on being included. She'll be appearing in new garb, after I run the idea for her actions in the quest past you!
-
Yes, my mistake was pointed out to me! I think it was a good strategy, wish it would have worked!

It doesn't bug me when you do it once. A lot of your points were valid. But you did it three times during the quest itself in PM, countless times in thread, and now again a month or so after its concluded after you already gave your thoughts. You know your stuff, and I DO value your input, but you're beating a very dead horse right now. It's the same when you keep telling me that I killed off all the NPCs you liked. Its fine to have that opinion and share it, but doing it over and over again is just offensive to the NPCs that I have left and like. You understand game design better than most people, but it doesn't mean you have to be mean about it. Offer advice, and then let it rest. And yes, agreed, neither of those are objectively better. That wasn't what I was saying, I was saying over all there were too many unique drops. I know that I personally won't be taking hard to balance for heroes on future quests. That's not people like Docken with his SP or Guts with his attacks, Hybros with his armor or you with your scrolls. Those are easy to manage and you all worked for it. But too many unique drops makes it simply too hard to keep track of. Sandy himself has stated a similar thing, which is why I was so surprised by the drops on this quest (Sandy in previous quests has also been relatively conservative and fair, it is only this quest I took issue with). I apologize, apparently you're right about the fog. I personally agree with you, that should have worked in my opinion.

I wish I had the parts, that would be awesome! You have SO MANY NPCs I want to feature, and yet somehow our parts aren't even remotely the same. I don't think he's associated with the Guild. Maybe I'll see if he can cameo in some other quest - there will WITHOUT A DOUBT be a cameo of a Progg in at least one of my quests, because I really like them. I've already asked Endgame about it, though I haven't tacked down the exact idea yet, and so we don't have anything super specific planned right now.

I get it. You wanted more consumables because you guys didn't think you'd win battles. Only, you did win, with the exception of one when you expressly ignored the advice given to you, so you need to stop bringing it up. If you don't enjoy quests that challenge you, don't sign up for my future quests. There is too much unique gear in this game. I think many players feel this way, and MANY QMs do. This quest simply had too much unique stuff. They probably got double the amount of stuff they can wear, and triple the amount of weapons they can use, MANY of which are new and unique and powerful. Tell me other quests where this is true. I didn't see any heroes try to clear the fog or melt the ice. QMs don't need to hand you those on a platter, its a job trait, try it out.

Is there a notable alchemist character I could build? I don't have the parts for anyone from 63 (and we don't know their fates yet...) or for Cula, U'lalah, or Victoria. Can anyone (Sandy) think of any other notable members of that house I might be able to take a shot at? Also, Guffington 2 is well into planning. It looks to offer Hinckwell Rep, Invision Rep, and Shadeux Rep. It will also feature returns of a few notable characters, though none of them are mine (other than the ones that are already in the Guffington charter repertoire). I am purposefully keeping characters from the Wren Quests free of my next two quests, so that the stories can grow on their own. That being said, 38 will be referenced quite a bit as well. JimBee, speaking of references, get my PM?

An outsider opinion, now that the floor has been opened up (I've been waiting for Sandy or a player). Five months is too long for ANY quest, even if it has a huge story. It should be divided into littler pieces. Most of your quests are so short, this one was so long. I know for a fact I would have been bored. Besides the length, there wasn't really a story. Maybe they were getting to it, but like JimBee and Quarry said, just too long of a wait. I actually kept up exceedingly well with Quest 50, as opposed to a some other quests. The rooms were beautiful, the enemies inventive. If there had been a story, it would have been superb. I think too much loot was dropped. And too many unique items. Even over 5 months... that list they have in the Hall... no one else gets that many unique items in five months, not even with 5 one month long quests. I know the temptation, especially as the Game Master, but I just think it was too much. More "common" drops (consumables/gold) and less unique ones would have made me happy. Those figures in the last shot looked awesome. And I wasn't kidding about being there next time if possible. It would be a lot of fun, especially after you restructure a bit. The continuous battle was cool, just too long. Endgame kidnapped it and shortened it, and I think it paid off for him. Cheers, Sandy! Live and learn! It was still a good quest, just far from YOUR BEST quest. As JimBee also said, I'm sure you know that any and all critiques come from a place of love. And seriously, those character combos... I mean, for 108 of them, they looked awesome. I'd say I liked about 90% of the ones we saw, which is a ton all considered. The figures were awesome, and specials awesome, and challenges awesome.

Yes, didn't you pay attention to the plot of the first one. I plan to read your whole quest once it is finished (the plot confuses me slightly, but I feel certain if I read it after it has concluded I will understand). I have been skimming, however, and paid careful attention to the Po Brothers because I liked them so damn much. If I have the parts by then, they may very well appear!

Flipz, I'm really liking this new Arthur. This is one of the most reasonable character turn arounds I think we've seen in the game. It was motivated by in game stuff, but he really seems like a reformed man without losing any of his former traits. I don't know, it just works for me. I'd advise sticking on this path for a while, its a great character reboot but totally believable and really quite interesting.

Ooooo! Without dragging things on too much, I just realized the Wren questers who haven't heard of Wren's death (Docken, Tarn, Hybros and Tesni) just returned to the Hall all at once! Huzzah! JimBee, sorry I left right as you got back, I'd love Hybros and Boomingham to catch up, it has been FAR too long, but he still remembers the Imp fondly.
