Flying Lego Technic...!?
DrJB replied to Technic Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The set is about $100 on the lego EDU site, though some 'ambitious' eBayers would gladly charge you $300 for it.- 6 replies

Gears Meshing at 'other' angles
DrJB replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Who said Lego can't fly ? -
Very good point. I did an LDD of Nico's tracked vehicle recently and found out that the track elements do not always come aligned. There is so much lateral gap/play that, after you attch them, the holes won't line up any more. I ended up using some 'scaffolding' to align the tracks ... not easy and rather painful. Just another example of the limitations of LDD/digital. The two (physical/virtual) go hand in hand and are thus 'complementary'.

I wonder how fast that'll spin with the EDU propellers (large white, from renewable energy set)- 6 replies

When most of us think of gears, typically those have either parallel or perpendicular axes. However, and with the double-bevel gears, there is the possibility to have 'any' angle between the axes, from 0 to 90 degrees. Have you seen any such applications where the angle between axes is neither 0 nor 90? The only one application I found is the 'gear ball' in the video below.

LDD enables me to explore many ideas/geometries before I get to the actual parts. With LDD it is very easy to make modifications to the design, especially when you have intricate assemblies. One point I must stress: If you're going the LDD route, you must learn to use groups. These enable you to create sub-assemblies and bring them together, or even later take them apart, one sub-system at a time. Very powerful.

Nico71's Creations
DrJB replied to nico71's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Very nice tank. I tried to build it in LDD and I must say it's very rewarding. When I first saw Nico was using 5 motors I was not sure why so many. Plenty of functions, very nicely done! I had to make some minor changes to circumvent LDD's anti-collision feature. -
I got this over the weekend for the kids (and their dad) and they had fun assembling it and making other/custom layouts from our stock of lego parts (without having to take a part the original). As for play value, I am not sure it beats an original wooden maze. The main 'issues' are that the ball is 'light' (not heavy), not smooth (indentations of soccer ball), and the surface/track is non-smooth as well. This makes controlling the ball motion rather difficult/imprecise. Being a 'purist', I tried to use heavier balls (bionicle Zamor and EV3 steel ball bearing) but both were wider than 2M and would not fit. Overall ok, but do not expect the experience to match that of a 'real' maze.

Mindstorms software advise
DrJB replied to Tmanderson's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I believe the EV3 software (free download from Lego) can also run the NXT. I know for sure the NXT sensors/motors can be used with EV3. Worth a try anyway since it's free. -
[MOC] Borderlands Vehicles
DrJB replied to scynox's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@ scynox: I'm not done yet with the LXF files but I can assure you this has been a very fun/rewarding build and I bet it must be in real life as well. The intricate build and the details of the construction are high up there. You must have gone through several iterations to get these vehicles 'right'. I'm rather surprised not many people have come to see this or commented, as these are very unique vehicles, very different from the super-car 'craze'. I must say so far I have not encountered a single illegal connection. I wonder how well this would fare on Lego Ideas. Compliments on two very nice builds. -

DrJB replied to scynox's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@Didumos69 - Thank You. Everyone Else. Here are two more files, for the other vehicle in this thread. The LXF is a work-in-progress. Enjoy @scynox - Could you kindly upload more pictures for the steering mechanism and attachment of the engine fairings (picture below). I could not figure those out. I added more canons, but those can be removed easily. http://www.brickshel...ands_runner.lxf -
I'd like to setup a dedicated computer in the Lego Room and was wondering if anyone has successfully ported LDD to a Linux system e.g. a Raspberry PI. I'm almost sure the answer is No, but thought it never hurts to ask.

[MOC] Borderlands Vehicles
DrJB replied to scynox's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Looks much nicer than the LDD screenshot. Can you share the LDD file or better yet a screenshot on how you attached the seat? Also, can u give quick pointers on how you did the render? -
[MOC] Borderlands Vehicles
DrJB replied to scynox's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@LXF Thanks for the hint. I learned a couple of tricks in LDD. @scynox Thanks for your patience with this. I was able to build most of the vehicle, but I think I still have some areas that are either incomplete or incorrect. First, here is an overall view of what I have, along with the LDD file. Further below, I'm showing areas I'm having difficulties with and would appreciate more pictures so that I can fix those. http://www.brickshel...borderlands.lxf Looking from the driver's side. I need a shot that details a bit more the area near the driver's feet. I believe there are some 'pedals' there. From the rear-left side of the vehicle. There are many 3L blue pins, but I can't figure out what they connect to. Behind the driver, I need few more details about the parts that go in there. The 'grille' or structure that sits next to the driver. I can't figure out how it's attached to the vehicle. I think my rendition below is incorrect. -
WeDo 2.0 - The future of PF
DrJB replied to BusterHaus's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The mold was made in 2014 ... and we have not yet seen a single PF/WeDO on the mass market yet. Except the education products, but that is a much smaller scope (I think). This begs another question: what is the goal of the EDU division? Is it not to get kids hooked on Lego early on to boost sales in the general consumer division? -

New LDD/LXF file uploaded, same link as before. Starting to look like the real thing. Still needs some work on styling and chassis. -

DrJB replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I did look at the education website and still not much information there. They talk about a WeDo 2.0, but NOT a PF 2.0. Here is what I found https://le-www-live-...bdc60b7445e.pdf Check pages 36-38 for the new electronic components. Yes, they do talk about a smart hub and a new medium motor. But to me, this looks more like a lighter version of EV3 (this is what the original WeDo was, anyway), or to be fair, something in between EV3 and the current PF. I have yet to see a PF 2.0 mentioned explicitely, unless we're again 'speculating'... Of course, I might not be looking in the right place as well. Do you have a direct link to PF 2.0? -

It seems to me everyone is talking about PF 2.0 but no one knows for sure what it is. It's just another wishful thinking . -

Korean as default language for Eurobricks
DrJB replied to Bob De Quatre's topic in Forum Information and Help
This was coming and has been in the works for some time anyway. You want proof? Well, think of Bricklink, it was under English speaking management, now under Korean. I bet Doktor-Brick and MOCpages will follow suit soon. -
