Official Lego sets - Book, WIP, Requests
Gnac replied to Superkalle's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I've started on 31011 - Aviation Adventures, but the mechanism for spinning the propeller is several magnitudes more frustrating to build than that in 4953. It might actually be impossible to do in LDD. EDIT: Done. At last. Apologies for not explaining the issue at the time Mister Smiley, but I just couldn't fathom it. -

Another Creator mini Christmas Tree? OK, I'll buy this of course, but I would rather have something around 60cm high. This thing looked quite unusual to me (even before comparing to 30009 or 40024), but I like the use of red pieces to suggest tinsel, and the transparent starfish piece is just right. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 30186 - Christmas Tree [Promo] - theme: Creator / Seasonal LXF (LDD 4.3.6)- 5,042 replies

PHP-based one-script LXF Gallery Viewer-thing!
Gnac replied to Gnac's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I don't know the first thing about Microsoft's ASP, but seeing that Eurobricks' forums run on PHP, I assume that the modules to run this script are present. It really depends on how the site administrators feel about implementing this functionality. I have no idea of how busy they are (most likely VERY), so it may be something which is simply not possible due to time, no matter how interesting the concept. I am willing to take up the challenge of integrating it, but then there is the matter of trust. This may be a thing which can be worked out through THE POWER OF SUGGESTION. I've considered setting up a site for this sort of thing, but I'd really like it to live here, where there is already a community of dedicated contributors and administrators (many of my own websites just DIED through apathy, LOL). -
PHP-based one-script LXF Gallery Viewer-thing!
Gnac replied to Gnac's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I've updated the link in the first post, with a new file which I hope fixes these issues. The "first letter eating thing" was a due to personal preference, and also because I didn't properly "clean up" the script for public use (this is fixed). I've also implemented your layout suggestions in the CSS rules. -

LDraw files are a very different beast from LXFMLs (XML-based), but I have experience with creating libraries to parse specialised data formats, and parsing shouldn't pose a problem, considering the "open-source" nature of LDraw and its various supporting projects. I'm happy that the LDD team chose standard formats such as ZIP files and XML, though - since PHP has the ability to deal with these things effortlessly. One day, I will get around to reading the documentation provided by Superkalle properly, and implementing it in a useful way (like all them Jedi trix). If I manage to create something satisfactory, I wonder if it may even form the basis of a redesigned digital model repository for EuroBricks! :doushio: -

One option is to give her the cash to buy an Amazon Gift Certificate, and get it that way. -

What am I looking at here? I am interested in this! -
I've been hoarding this thing for a while - it was a proof of concept which formed the basis of a personal inventory management app which I've lost interest in, but I kept it because it performs its purpose so well. If you have a PHP enabled webserver or localhost, this script can scan a folder of LXF files and return some useful information, such as the thumbnail image, brick count, LDD version and brickset. It's probably not suitable for reading several hundred files at once, but I hope it will be interesting and useful to novices and experts alike, perhaps even serving as a basis for your own projects. See the thing here! (demo with some MOCs / official models, using a mix of internal and external image previews) Get the thing here! (link updated: 2014-12-10) CHANGELOG (full changelog is included with the readme, also viewable here) 20141210 @ 16:11 [bugfix] Added a check on the main gallery loop to supress a script error when no LXFs are found. [bugfix] Completely removed the XML parsing "function" responsible for the "file_exists()" issue - the functionality is used only once per loop, and can be done in a single line anyway.

Perfect renders - can it be done?
Gnac replied to Superkalle's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I had a go, but I was thwarted by hexadecagons on the wheel hubs: The image required a fair bit of postwork already, and it looks like some more will be needed - but it's still much better than what I could do with a camera! -

Gnac replied to Calabar's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
This is a much more appealing solution, because it keeps everything in a straight line - and it also reminds me that I need to actually LEARN some LXFML hacking, instead of trial and error. Would you mind if I updated the two 4953a models with this assembly? You'll get Superkredit, of course.- 5,042 replies

This is a duplicate, but I hope it will be of particular interest, seeing that it is a tricky model to build in either state. See the end of this post to find out why! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4953 - Fast Flyers [Model A] - theme: Creator [Duplicate] Errors: See below. LXF (LDD 4.3) SUPER BONUS! Here is the same model with the wings swept forward, for completeness (See a preview on my Brickshelf) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HERE ARE SOME WORDS FOR YOU NOW The mechanism to move the wings is built in such a way that it usually requires the surrounding parts to be connected with a hairline gap, but the dreaded "out of system" error doesn't seem to be caused by 32525 (Technic 11M Beam) - connecting a beam to a technic brick actually causes the top of the beam to sit slightly lower than the top of the brick. While building this model, I made sure to build the moving mechanism last, so that I could attempt to insert it later, piece-by-piece. This is how I discovered that part 32291 (Technic Cross Block 2x1) protrudes by much more than the space saved by the technic beams. This appears to be a very obscure "out of system" error, and I got around it by abusing LDD's lenient detection of some connections. I rotated the 6632 half-beams around their connection to the 32525s by 2 degrees, which was all that LDD would allow before hitting the underside of everything built above it. This little "pivot" gave enough clearance for 32291, at the small cost of making part 43093 (axle / friction pin) connect at the other end in a totally WRONG WAY. However, LDD allows this, and doesn't remove its instances when reloading the file. Take it out, put it back in, even insert all sorts of technic axles through it. The thing just doesn't care! EDIT: Superkalle devised a better solution to this problem by editing the LXFML to lower much of the moving assembly. That was a while ago... I finally remembered that I needed to update these models to include his changes. If you have downloaded these LXF files before 20130519, you may want to re-download them. Cheers!- 5,042 replies

You know how LDD has two 1x1 plates with a clip on top? The older 2555, and the newer 12825 with a rounded clip? This newer part seems to cause trouble with the hinge tool. In most cases, one can click anywhere on a hinged assembly, and the green movement circle will appear around the pivot point. LDD is usually pretty good at finding this pivot, but with part 12825, I found that I had to click on the part itself, often requiring several clicks to make sure that the part wasn't trying to rotate around the stud. The most annoying thing happens when using the arrow keys to move a hinged assembly which contains more than one instance of part 12825: instead of moving in whole steps of 18 degrees, the rotation value starts splitting into floating points right away, and trying to move everything back rarely returns to the original value. LXF example In this example, the yellow assembly uses part 2555, and the red one uses 12825. See how differently they react, then vow to never use part 12825 in your MOCs...

Official-Alternate Models
Gnac replied to natesroom's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
So I eventually got a load of Designer sets (including 4402, 4403 and 4404, woot), but before I recreate those, I'll be testing the waters here with some of the alts from the X-POD instruction booklets. I've identified each model according to which page it appears on, and used an alpha suffix to show which model appears first on the page (E.G., model A can appear at the top of a page, or the very left, depending on how the ideas are presented). Everything else tries to stick to the LDD official topic rules. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4335 - Black Robot Pod [Page 11, Model A] - theme: X-POD LXF (LDD 4.3.6) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4335 - Black Robot Pod [Page 11, Model B] - theme: X-POD Error (yep, an error on a little thing like this): Part 3957 (antenna) cannot fit in the anti-stud cavity of the 1x2 slope. They were stuck so hard that I actually worried about pulling the legs off their little hips. If you want to try it, I find that the best way to get your legs back, is to move them from side-to-side and wiggle them out a little bit, then use the sharp end of a brick seperator to lever them off. I don't have any old minifig legs to test if it is simply a case of needing to "break the parts in"... I'm certain that there is some sort of software buggery going on, with regards to how I managed to get the minifig legs' pegs inside the 3069's cavity.- 5,042 replies

All these bats are driving me botty! ...wait, that's not right. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20001 - LEGO Batbot [Promo] - theme: Creator Error: Minifig legs won't connect to 1x2 bricks. I now know that this is because they're VERY DIFFICULT TO REMOVE in the real thing. I spoofed the connection by using 1x1 round bricks, and put the 1x2 bricks behind the model.
