collisions in LDD

No, LDD enforces collisions. The LDraw family of tools (MLcad, LDcad, etc.) don't, but they've got a much higher learning curve. -
Paint.net is a good free image editor, with a pretty good plugin system. A quick search revealed the existence of at least a couple of different grid plugins. http://www.getpaint.net http://forums.getpai...d-maker-plugin/ [Edit] I use Paint.net, so I installed the grid plugin. I think it's going to be exactly what you're looking for!

Representing Duplo in LDD

A Duplo 2x4 is 4x8 LEGO studs by 2 LEGO bricks high. Be aware that Duplo bricks will only connect on the top to 2x LEGO bricks (2x2, 2x4, 2x6, etc.). Also, if you build with any of the Ldraw suite of tools, there are some Duplo bricks in the Ldraw library if you do need to see a digital representation. -

LDD 4.3.9 bugs and issues

I can get this one to work, as long as I don't insert the antenna too far. The problem arises when the antenna collides with the stud of whatever piece the 4595 is connected to. -

For many of us, we're thinking in terms of packaged product, which is why sets vs. models is even an issue. I think it also becomes more apparent when people are building at a smaller scale. If one of us were to build a set like http://brickset.com/sets/8135-1/Bridge-Chase, we would have already used up 7 or 8 models, depending on how you count the bridge. When you add the other Tiny Turbos sets from 2007, you end up with over 20 models, even though there were only 7 retail sets. Just food for thought.

These days, it seems to be very common for sets to have more than one model. 5000 bricks in only 10 models is an average of 500 bricks per model, and I'm not sure very many themes have that type of average. Look at a minifig-based theme like the upcoming Volcano Explorers theme, for example. Using the numbers available on Brickset (and not counting the polybag since no piece count is listed), I come up with a total of 3013 pieces and 20 models in six sets, for an average of about 151 pieces per model. (I didn't count minifigs or the boulders or other obvious accessories.) If modular components are connected, do they count as one model?

Anything current will be better than what you've got now. I've had good success with Dell Outlet refurbished computers. They regularly post coupon deals on Twitter, with can often save you another 20-40%. I personally only look at the "Business" outlet deals, and not the "Home" deals. As far as specs, look for an Intel Core i5 or better, and a minimum of 4GB of RAM. A dedicated video card is also a good idea.

I don't know of any way to do this, but it is a feature I'd dearly like to have. -
The issue is more which part/color combinations (known as elements) exist, or don't. When determining if an element "exists", Bricklink is often used as a definitive guide. What did you build your models in? Depending on the answer, there might be a tool or two out there that can help check your model against parts that actually exist. For your models, several examples of elements that don't actually exist can be found in Optimus's energy axe.

No, not all of the pieces that you see in LDD are available in the colors shown. (This is even more true if you use LDD Extended mode, where you can make any part any color that you want.) If you really need the particular piece in a currently-in-production color, I suggest that you add it to a wanted list on Bricklink. That way, if it is ever actually produced and sold, you can be notified.

LDD view orientation

If you use the right mouse button, you can click and drag to change the view angle with a bit more precision. Just be aware that LDD doesn't have a true orthographic view mode. (And here's a bonus tip: if those arrows on the sides of the build area are getting in the way, you can press Ctrl+1 to make them go away!) -
When in doubt, use LPub to strip the LPub comments out of your file, and start over. Yes, it's a pain, especially with larger models, but sometimes it's what is necessary. Here's an updated sample file, showing a couple of steps in between uses of the submodel. I can PM you my email address, if you'd like me to take a look at your file.
